President's Message | |

Douglas Kueffner, AIA
AIA Michigan President
Welcome to 2011! This will be a year of transition and transformation, with many opportunities to advance the architecture profession in Michigan. At AIA MI, our focus for this year will be:
- A successful transition in executive leadership
- Visits to every chapter by Barb Sido, CAE, our new executive director, and members of the Executive Committee
- Execute against the strategic plan, especially in the areas of membership value and financial sustainability
- Engage emerging professionals
I will be continuing the tradition that was started last year, by inviting all chapter presidents to write a guest column for this newsletter. Please take this opportunity to let the entire membership know the good news about what is happening in your chapter.
We want to hear from you. Feel free to contact me or Barb with your comments, concerns or questions. We are here to listen, and to help. |

Mandatory Continuing Education
Michigan joins 42 other states with a mandatory continuing education requirement for licensure renewal.
Beginning on November 1st 2011, to October 31, 2012, all architects in the state of Michigan will be required to earn 12 hours of continuing education annually, all of which must be Health, Safety and Welfare credits, to renew their license to practice in the state. Beginning November 2012 the requirement will be 24 HSW credits for the standard two-year licensing renewal cycle. AIA MI is developing a plan and programs to help members meet the new requirement. Options under discussion include a possible series of low-cost programs throughout the state; distance learning; making connections to CE available outside the state, including national conferences; and assistance with reporting. Your AIA continuing education credits are accepted by the state providing they are HSW credits.
We also want to hear from you. How can we best help you meet the new requirement? What kinds of programs, in what format, when and where would be most valuable to you? AIA MI understands it has a significant new responsibility to members to help them fulfill the requirement. Help us decide how best to do that by sending your suggestions to Executive Director Barb Sido at barb@aiami.com. |

Leadership Retreat | |
Approximately 50 AIA Michigan leaders met in Traverse City last week for the annual Leadership Retreat. In addition to the valuable fellowship, attendees engaged in important discussions about the future of the profession and AIA Michigan. Topics included the new Mandatory Continuing Education requirement for licensure; the plans of the Center for Emerging Professional Resources (CEPR); proposed bylaws amendments; and a review of the strategic plan. AIA MI's new Executive Director, Barb Sido, CAE, invited all attendees to tell her what they thought she needed to know as she begins her tenure. |

2011 Resources |
In a continuing reflection of the financial conditions in the profession, the design and construction industry, and the state of Michigan overall, the AIA MI budget for 2011 has been reduced again this year. Included in the reductions is the elimination of one staff position. The remaining staff (Cathy, Evelyn, Lynne and Evey, as well as Barb) will strive to continue to provide the excellent customer service and support to which AIA MI members have become accustomed. We do ask, however, that members understand that, just as at their firms, a reduction in staff has implications for what can be done and in what time frame. Some of the individualized attention and assistance that members have received in the past may need to be reduced somewhat. To avoid this, members are asked to plan ahead and contact the staff with plenty of lead time to handle their requests. We appreciate your understanding. |

Architectural Record Partnership | | Although Architect magazine is now the official magazine of the national AIA, many members remain loyal to Architectural Record. But the subscription every member received as part of his or her membership has now expired. We are pleased to announce a new partnership with McGraw-Hill and AIA MI receives a royalty for every subscription purchased by an AIA MI member. Architectural Record is offering a special discounted rate for AIA Michigan members to renew their subscription. You'll save nearly 60% off the newsstand rate, and if you act today you'll also get the digital edition of Architectural Record included at no extra charge. The digital edition allows you to access the Architectural Record app on your iPhone or iPad, completely free! To renew your subscription, click here! |

AIA National Grassroots and Advocacy Conference
February 2-5, AIA leaders from all across the nation will gather in Washington DC to learn how to make their state and local AIA organizations more effective, and to advocate for issues important to architects with elected and staff leaders in the US House and Senate. Further information and registration materials for Grassroots can be found by clicking here. A highlight of Grassroots every year is the visits by members to Capitol Hill. Visits with Michigan's two Senators will be coordinated by AIA Michigan staff. Local chapters are responsible for scheduling meetings with their respective US Representatives. Of particular interest to us are meetings with Dave Camp, Sandy Levin, Fred Upton and John Dingell. If you need assistance with scheduling, check out all the info for Advocacy day click here. Once you have your Hill meetings scheduled, please let Barb Sido know by emailing her at barb@aiami.com. |

16th Annual Legislative Day
Our annual Legislative Day is one of the most important events on the AIA MI calendar. If you can only attend one state event this year, Legislative Day should be it. It is critical that our legislators in Lansing meet us, know who we are, and understand the value we provide in communities across Michigan. Information on the March 16, 2011, Legislative Day in Lansing was distributed on January 11. The registration form can be found by clicking here. Deadline to register is March 4. |

Emerging Professional Beaux Arts Ball
AIAS invites all AIA members to the 2nd Annual AIAS Michigan Beaux Arts Ball that will be held on February 5th at the Detroit Yacht Club starting at 8pm. This collaboration brings together all six schools of architecture in Michigan to meet new people and professionals from across the state. This year, students from across the Midwest are expected to attend.
Attendees will enjoy an evening of dining and dancing that will demonstrate the passion and dedication that students of architecture have today in Michigan schools. UDM Dean Stephen Vogel, who is retiring this year, will be honored for his commitment to students for the past 18 years and his commitment to the AIA for the past 23 years.
This event will surely be the largest meeting of architecture professionals and students in Michigan this year. Please see the attached invitation and RSVP form that can be printed and mailed to the address indicated. Also, join the event on Facebook (2011 AIAS Michigan Beaux Arts Ball). The RSVP deadline has been extended to January 31. Questions? Contact Kaitlynn Young at aiasudm@gmail.com.

2011 AIA Compensation Survey
Need up-to-date salary information? Participate in the 2011 AIA Compensation Survey! It has been almost three years since the AIA published the 2008 AIA Compensation Survey Report - an industry standard, and the most comprehensive national survey on architect compensation. The new 2011 survey will provide compensation data for 40 positions at architecture firms, all nine regions of the country, plus many states and metro areas. To thank you for your participation, you will receive a complimentary PDF copy of the complete survey report when it is released. Because only a limited number of firms can be directly contacted, your reply is vital for the success of this study. If you have received an invitation to participate, please be sure to submit your response by the deadline. If you are a firm leader who has not received an invitation and would like to participate, please send an email to Jennifer Riskus at economics@aia.org. We thank you in advance for your participation.
