AIA Detroit is proud to announce the Annual Awards Programs to encourage and promote "Excellence in Architecture." Awards will be presented to recognize individual accomplishments and bring to public attention outstanding examples of architectural services rendered by Chapter Detroit firms. |

Eligibility Requirements |
|
- Eligibility
All "Design Excellence" entries must be built projects by AIA Detroit Members in good standing within firms that satisfy section 2010(1) of the state licensing act. The projects may be located anywhere in the world and must have been completed after January 1, 2004. Projects that have won awards in other programs or were submitted in prior years to this program are eligible. Prior award winners in this program are ineligible. When one architect is not the sole author, all other participants substantially contributing to the design of the project must be given credit as part of the submission. All "Recognitions" entries must be nominated by AIA Detroit Members in good standing. Nominations must be submitted for an individual that has made significant contribution(s) to the profession in a manner that has fostered or promoted excellence in architecture.
- Submission
Submissions for design awards are required to be digital and in a PC format. All images are to be submitted as JPG files in a PowerPoint presentation on a CD. Nominations for recognition awards shall be submitted in a binder provided by AIA Detroit. Nominations for individual recognitions should include a biography, examples of work and up to three letters of recommendation from AIA Detroit Members. No other format of submissions will be accepted. Detailed instructions will be provided upon receipt of entry fees.
- Jury
The jury will be composed of prominent architects from another AIA component outside of Michigan.
- Date & Fee
Submit registration form and fee for each building project and for each nomination binder to AIA Detroit by June 25, 2009. Submission requirements will be forwarded to all entrants immediately. Refer to the registration form for fees. All submissions and nominations must be received by July 20, 2009, in an envelope marked "2009 AIA Honor Awards Entry or Nomination." Entry fee includes one plaque per award for submitting firm. Additional plaques will be available for a fee.
- Awards
All awards are called "Honor Awards." Criteria for evaluating design achievements include the demonstration of exemplary skill and sensitivity in resolution of formal, functional and technical requirements and/or the advancement of the contemporary understanding of design by proposing new approaches to the development of architectural forms.
- Exhibition
The Honor Awards will be presented and the projects exhibited at the AIA Detroit Honor Awards Presentation on Friday, November 21, 2009 at Lawrnece Technological University. |
| Recognition Awards |

- Charles Blessing
The Charles A. Blessing Award is named in honor of visionary Detroit City Planner, architect/engineer and educator who committed his life to the pursuit of a higher quality of life of everyone. This award may be given each year to the individual who best exemplifies the vision, commitment and accomplishments of Charles A. Blessing, FAIA. Only one such award shall be made in one year. The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual in the Detroit Metropolitan Area who has exhibited leadership in planning and civic issues which resulted in positive improvements to our urban environment. The Blessing Award may be awarded posthumously.
- Honorary Affiliate
AIA Detroit invites nominations for Honorary Membership. A person of esteemed character who is not eligible for AIA membership in the Chapter, but who has rendered a distinguished service to the profession of architecture or to the arts and sciences allied therewith may be admitted to Membership as an Honorary Member of the Chapter. The award may also be presented to an individual that has made a significant contribution to the profession in a manner that has fostered or promoted excellence in architecture.
- Gold Medal
AIA Detroit invites nominations for the award of the Gold Medal. This is the highest honor the Chapter can bestow upon a member, and no more than one will be granted each year. The award is made in recognition of notable contributions to the AIA or the Detroit Chapter, and outstanding achievement in one or more areas of professional endeavor. The Detroit Chapter Gold Medal may be awarded posthumously.
- Young Architect
The purpose of this award is to recognize proficiency and exceptional contributions to the profession by young licensed architects. Nominees must be members of AIA Detroit for a minimum of 3 years and 40 years of age or younger during the calendar year of the award. They should demonstrate exceptional accomplishment in the profession, dedication to the ideals of the Chapter, contributions to the profession and service to the community. More than one award may be given at the discretion of the jury. Nominations may be made by any AIA Detroit Member other than the nominee. The entry shall be a portfolio in a full-vu binder that includes a biography, examples of work in a photographic 8" x 10" format and three letters of recommendation. |

Design Excellence Awards |
|
- Building
Open to a single or related group of buildings including new construction, renovations and restorations.
- Low Budget/Small project
To recognize design excellence within the constraints of small budget, scale and size. Final construction costs must be submitted. Small projects must be under 2,000 sf in size. Submissions must have been executed for a client and may include interior projects.
- Interior Architecture
To recognize the excellence and diversity of interiors projects designed by AIA Detroit Members. Interiors that have been submitted for a Building Award, or have previously received an award are not eligible.
- Urban Design
For projects of an urban nature including groups of buildings, plazas, parks, streetscapes or other aspects of an urban fabric.
- 25 Year
For distinguished projects designed by an AIA Detroit Member prior to 1984 and used for at least 25 years for the same purpose for which they were designed.
- Sustainable Design Award
To recognize excellence in architecture which contributes to the social, economic, cultural, aesthetic and natural components of the global environment through responsible design.
- Unbuilt Project
This category is open to architectural projects of all types designed but not to be completed before December 31, 2009. The intent of this category is to honor outstanding architectural conceptual thought. All shall be projects commissioned for compensation on behalf of a client with the ability and intention to build the project, undertaken by a member of AIA Detroit and located anywhere in the United States or abroad.
