 Sawston Library - latest update

Mobile Library in SawstonFollowing serious fire damage Sawston Library is now closed until further notice.

Around 6,700 books as well as library equipment were destroyed in the blaze at the Sawston Village College site on Thursday 6 September. The library was closed at the time and nobody was hurt. The extent of the damage is still being assessed and discussions are ongoing with insurers.

With the kind help and co-operation of the Parish Council, Council Chiefs have been able to quickly provide a temporary mobile library service (pictured above) arrangement for the village. Starting from Monday 10 September, it will visit every Monday from 11am to 5pm and every Tuesday from 5pm to 7pm. The mobile library will be parked on a hard standing in Mill Lane by the recreation field.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their kind messages of support and offers of help from the local community and the members of the Sawston Library Friends Group.

Further details about the regular monthly mobile service and opening hours at Great Shelford library are available on the library website.

Central Library - Business as usual

What's On in Central LibraryWe are pleased to report that Cambridge Central Library opened for normal business from Tuesday 28 August following the closure of the library due to the extreme weather on Saturday 25 August.

Once again, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all staff and members of the public for their help, and understanding following the flooding.

There will need to be some scheduled further works to isolated areas of the library and advance notice will be given when these are likely to take place.

Please help us complete the budget consultation survey which will help Cambridgeshire County Council makes £37 million in savings next year. The survey should take only 10-15 minutes, and it will be open from 5 September to 17 October 2012.

National Poetry Day - Thursday 4 October

National Poetry Day

Celebrate National Poetry Day this year with a creative contribution of your own! We invite you to assemble Book Spine Poems in our libraries, and we will set aside special shelves or tables to display them, on the day itself. Then we really hope that as many of you as possible will be able to photograph them and upload them to our Facebook page.

Is Book Spine Poetry new to you? All you have to do is select a small number of books with titles which fit together in, for example, a resonant, thought-provoking, shocking or amusing way, and arrange them in the order you would like them to be read.

We are encouraging children to write out their favourite poem on a star-shaped piece of card and these will be displayed in the children's libraries. Don't forget that children will find a rich variety of suitable book titles to use for their poems, in our children's libraries.

For further information about National Poetry Day, visit www.nationalpoetryday.co.uk. Look out for additional displays of poetry in Cambridgeshire libraries on the day, too.
