Dear Reader,

featherpenWe hope you are having a good summer break. If you go away don't forget that we have a variety of books from our recommended readings for you to choose from for your holiday. If you are staying and have children, why not visit your local libraries for all the Summer Reading Challenge events, including the science exhibitions?

We would also like to bring to your attention that beginning Monday 3 September, users accessing our online resources from outside the libraries will be required to log in using their library barcode on each of the individual online titles. One login to access all titles will no longer be possible after this date owing to problem with user authentication.

Future improvements to IT in libraries

OpacYou told us in our May library computer survey that we need to improve our computers and that you would like to see Wi-Fi in our libraries. So we are going to upgrade or replace all the computers in all our libraries and put in Wi-Fi.

These are big projects, so they will take time. We are working on the timescales now, but our estimate is that we will start the rollout early in the New Year. We hope that you will all enjoy the new improved service.

Website feedback wanted

Cambridgeshire County Council is re-developing it's site  www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk and we want your help.

We will be holding a website usability testing session at Central Library, Cambridge on Tuesday 21 August from 12noon - 2pm and we would be grateful it if you could come along and give us your comments.

You could also help us complete a short online survey here which wouldn't take more than five minutes of your time. Any ideas or opinions you have will be most welcome and will help us shape the way we deliver our online services.

Chatteris Library celebrates 10 years of Rhymetime

children_activities

Customers past and present flocked into the library to celebrate a very special anniversary, look at old photos, meet up with old friends and join the summer reading challenge. 96 visitors came to the library on the first morning alone.

Rhymetime graduates had their "now and then" photos taken and many families recorded their favourite memories of their time at Rhymetime.

"All three kids loved it - a lifetime of sanity for me. Happy days..."

"The Gardner family have really enjoyed Rhymetime since 2005. My two boys learned so much and their vocabulary improved so much too."

"We had a great time at Rhymetime, Emily loved singing and still does. Long may it continue."

"Rhymetime is a fabulous institution for parents and children - it made our Thursdays for three years!"

A very happy morning and the staff enjoyed it just as much as the families. It was wonderful to see how the children we knew so well as babies and toddlers are growing into fine young people and are still using their library!

Summer tour to places where broadband access is not so hot

ConnectingCambridgeshirelogoIt's summer and despite the weather, the Connecting Cambridgeshire campaign is getting out and about around the county's libraries to encourage more people to show they want better broadband.

More than 12,500 people have already registered online and on paper, but many more are needed to demonstrate where there is demand for better broadband.

An information display will tour larger libraries, with smaller displays making the rounds in rural areas where broadband coverage is poor. Library visitors can pick up a leaflet with a Freepost reply form or sign up to the campaign using a library computer or from home via our website www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk

Cromwell Museum's Golden Jubilee

The only museum run by Cambridgeshire County Council is the Cromwell Museum in the centre of Huntingdon. Oliver Cromwell is the entire focus of the Museum that is located in the former town grammar school where he was educated.  Although many places in the County can claim a slice of Cromwell - he lived in both St Ives and Ely, and was MP for Cambridge throughout the Civil Wars, Huntingdon is the place where he was born and lived over half his life.

This year Cambridgeshire Libraries, Archives and Information is celebrating the Museum's Golden Jubilee. The Museum is linking up with Huntingdon Male Voice Choir who are also marking their 50th anniversary, for a special concert to be held at All Saints' Church, opposite the Museum, on Saturday 22 September at 7.30pm. Tickets are available in advance from the Museum at £8 each. The benefits of the concert are all going to the Museum.

The current exhibition Perfumes for the Protector is running until the end of October and is a detailed look at one of the Museum's most exquisite objects - a cabinet of perfumed soap presented to Cromwell by the Duke of Tuscany in 1657.

The Museum is open daily from 10.30am-12.30am and 1.30pm-4pm everyday except Mondays. Admission is free.
