Story Lab - 2012 Summer Reading Challenge
All libraries in Cambridgeshire will be hosting the Story Lab Reading Challenge this summer. The Reading Challenge aims to keep children reading during the summer holidays and every child who reads six books or more will receive a certificate and medal at special presentation ceremonies in September.
When children sign up, they will receive their own 3D model laboratory where they can keep track of their reading progress. As they read, they collect stickers (some with "scratch and sniff" panels) to give them a real sense of achievement as they work their way through the bronze, silver and gold stages. Many libraries will have "Reading buddies" on hand to help and encourage children and there will be a range of exciting supporting activities.
Children can sign up for free at their local library from Monday 16 July, and last year over 6,500 Cambridgeshire children took part. See www.cambridgeshire.net for more activities. |

Library Science Lab: Bringing Hands-on Science to Libraries
Cambridgeshire Libraries is working in partnership with the Cambridge Science Centre to promote a series of free hands-on exhibitions by hosting Science Lab, a number of interactive exhibits at eleven of the county's libraries. The exhibitions will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, presided over by the Mayor of Cambridge, at Cambridge Central Library, 2pm on Saturday 28 July.
The exhibitions will then tour the county for three months. There will also be a range of free science shows and workshops to complement the exhibits, provided by the Cambridge Science Centre. Details of where the exhibits can be found and the programme of science shows and workshops can be found at www.cambridgesciencecentre.org.
Exhibitions dates in August are as follows:

Read it Again! The Cambridgeshire Children's Picture Book Award
The winner of the 2012 "Read it Again!" award for a debut picture book where the words and pictures are the work of one person is "No!" by Marta Altes (published by Child's Play).
Over 5,500 children from 44 Cambridgeshire schools read, discussed and voted for their favourite book from a shortlist of eight outstanding new picture books and "No!" was a very popular winner. Marta received her award from last year's winner Chris Haughton at a special presentation ceremony at the St Ives Corn Exchange, attended by 200 local children.
Marta is from Barcelona and studied children's book illustration at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. |

Celebrations were held in libraries around the county during National Bookstart Week last month at rhymetime and storytime events.

How to get your Friends Groups message out there
Mark Bright, Chairman of the Friends of Yaxley Group has kindly offered to share his thoughts on how Friends Groups can promote their roles and activities in the community.
Some of his suggestions in how to raise awareness of his own Friends Group include developing a contact list of local groups and associations, writing to the Yaxley Gazette and Peterborough Evening Telegraph, posting on Parish Council notice board, using social media, signposting to other websites e.g. the library website, the Parish Council website, the Cambridgeshire.net website and few more.
You can read his full article, along with FoYL June/July 2012 newsletter on Yaxley Library web page. |
