Our Mission:

InnVision is a primary gateway for homeless families and individuals seeking shelter and resources that lead to self-sufficiency.  Our comprehensive system of care promotes self-worth and dignity at multiple facilities throughout Silicon Valley, including shelters, longer-term housing options and service centers, each equipped to meet emergency and transitional needs of diverse, at-risk people.

InnVision is...the Way Home!

InnVision...The Way Home

February 2012

Greetings!

Christine's Photo
In this newsletter, I invite you to read about the inspiring efforts of citizens who are striving to make our community a better place. Each year, hundreds of groups, from service organizations, churches, companies, families, and circles of friends, come to InnVision program sites to share their talents and creativity with our clients.

I am especially inspired by the groups who are determined to make a big, long-lasting change. They build, they install, and they paint. They innovate, they create, and they put hours of sometimes tedious work into making something that is truly special.  It is because of these companies and groups that InnVision programs are so welcoming to those we serve.

The support of the community is the foundation of InnVision's ability to meet the needs of people living on the edge or on the street. It helps us defray costs, leverages our resources, and links us to partner agencies. It makes our clients feel that their community has not forgotten them and inspires them to get back on their feet to rejoin that community.

We welcome partners new and old to our organization. Please contact me if you would like to bring your own project to InnVision or if you would like a tour of our facilities. Private support is more important than ever due to reductions in government funding, so whether you can give your time or financial resources, we are happy to have you.

You know where to reach me.

 Warm regards,

 Christine sig

Coupons for Change

GTC mural

In mid-February, Coupons.com co-founders Michele and Steven Boal kicked off their Coupons for Changeinitiative and gave two InnVision sites a significant makeover! With the help of more than 300 incredible volunteers, Coupons.com transformed the Georgia Travis Center and the Villa, both InnVision sites for homeless and very low-income women and children.

Says Coupons.com co-founder Michele, "we are so pleased that we chose InnVision as the site of our inaugural Coupons for Change event, the philanthropic arm of Coupons.com. The week was filled with amazement and transformations in so many ways.  Not only was it incredible to see all that was accomplished as a company, but the most amazing part of the two days was how everyone worked with such compassion, displayed solid teamwork, and put so much heart and soul into every project no matter the size, all to benefit the families and individuals of InnVision."

Over the course of two days, Coupons.com employees painted a beautiful and inspiring  50-foot mural on a drab grey wall, took charge of organizing hundreds of pounds of clothing donations, removed old flooring and replaced with colorful tile, installed a new playground at Commercial Street Inn, and even hosted a wonderful Valentine's themed luncheon. At Villa, the team created a beautiful new kitchen with fresh paint, installed new cabinets and laminate flooring, removed old carpeting and laid new flooring in the airy living room, and repainted clients' rooms with soothing colors.  The Children's Area was transformed with fresh paint, plank floor installation, new furnishings, even a Hungry Caterpillar mural. There was really nothing they couldn't do!

Thanks to the amazing generosity of Coupons.com staff, homeless and at-risk women and families will feel more at home at InnVision!

Our New Pilot Program Has Taken Off!

Stanford Night Outreach Staff
Members of Stanford Night Outreach

Have you ever wanted to do more for the homeless population in Silicon Valley? One motivated group of college students have done just that, by initiating a collaboration between their group and InnVision to form Hotel de Zink: Women's Shelter.

For many years, Stanford Night Outreach, a Stanford University student organization, has followed its mission to provide social services to the homeless and very low-income folks in the area. Night Outreach students volunteered and assisted the local nonprofit Urban Ministry of Palo Alto, and after UMPA merged with InnVision in 2006, the group continued to work at the Opportunity Services Center and other locations on the Peninsula.

A few months ago, the students approached InnVision with an idea to partner on opening a women-only shelter in Palo Alto as a pilot program. This shelter would be modeled after the existing coed Hotel de Zink rotating shelter program currently operated by InnVision with a maximum of 15 beds. The idea of housing more homeless women generated a lot of community excitement and involvement, so much so that the students raised all the needed funds in just a few months.

Three churches (All Saints Episcopal, Peninsula Bible Church, and Menlo Park Presbyterian Church) volunteered to be a part of this effort by providing spaces and other logistics while they hosted the clients each month. InnVision assembled a case management staff, overnight shelter staff, administrative support, and most importantly, InnVision's 38 years of expertise to get the program off and running by the end of January. The students serve as client advocates and also volunteer in many ways every day to keep the shelter running smoothly. There are currently 11 women in the shelter who are working with a case manager to help address their needs.

Thanks to all those who have donated to make this effort possible! Your generosity will ensure that even more women on the Peninsula can find self-sufficiency through InnVision. If you would like to contribute, you can make a gift directly to Hotel de Zink: Women's Shelter on our donation page

I feel as though I have been an inconvenience to friends and others by staying where I am not welcomed, but you make me feel like home for now...I am going to get a place, a job and a better way of life in due time. But for now, thank you for all you do in making me feel welcome and that I belong.

- Tili, Hotel de Zink: Women's Shelter client

Local Girl Scout Helps InnVision Go Green

Rarely is a high school student able to make as much impact on a nonprofit as Mackenzie Burt did for InnVision the Way Home. Mackenzie, a talented senior at Leland High School in San Jose, recently completed her Gold Award for Girl Scouts and adopted InnVision for the project's focus. Last summer, Mackenzie hosted a Mother-Daughter Tea fundraiser that raised over $700 for InnVision. Admission to the event included a monetary donation along with a new or gently used T-shirt. With the help of the community, Mackenzie collected well over 700 T-shirts.  She then hosted volunteer sewing sessions to turn the T-shirts into bags for InnVision clients. She hopes to collect and transition 1,000 T-shirts before leaving for college.

"[The] T-shirts will be transformed into "green bags" ... and will be used by InnVision program residents at their on-site stores so they can get rid of the current paper and plastic bags, in an effort to reduce impact to the environment," Mackenzie told 95120 Magazine. The green bags were an amazing success at Donation Depot where homeless and at-risk clients shop free of charge. Shoppers loved them because they looked great and were able to be used over and over again, too! InnVision wants to congratulate Mackenzie on her Gold Award and thank her for dedicating so much of her time to help InnVision go green!

Dedicated to Making a Change for the Better

When Allen arrived at Julian Street Inn (JSI) in December, his prospects for housing did not look promising. His modest monthly Social Security Insurance check was not even enough to rent an average studio in Silicon Valley, and his criminal record and active probation were limiting his ability to find work and qualify for rental units in the area. Nonetheless, while at the emergency shelter, Allen actively applied for housing, pursued a lead for employment, and complied with the terms of his probation. His demonstrated to his case manager that, regardless of how his background looked on paper, he was firmly committed to his sobriety and his active re-entry to society.

Needless to say, when offered a studio apartment through InnVision in Redwood City, Allen leaped at the opportunity and moved in during February. One week later, he gave his case manager at Julian Street Inn an unsolicited phone call to thank him and JSI for their generosity and, more importantly, to inform him of his ongoing successes: Allen will be graduating probation upon successful completion of one remaining anger management course; he has already established an expanding support system through AA in the Mid-Peninsula; and he has even landed some part-time work helping clear apartment units of abandoned belongings.

Allen's dedication, in conjunction with the services he received through InnVision, demonstrate that homelessness can be overcome, no matter what the causes or circumstances.

Sew for Love

Sew for Love

On February 10-12, 250 volunteers arrived at the Georgia Travis Center to share their love of

sewing  and the desire to give back to those in need.

For the 12th Annual Sew For Love event, volunteers cut, matched, pinned, corded, and hand sewed fabric to lovingly create almost 900 items! The projects included beautiful quilts for children and adults, warm fleece hats, cozy pet beds, fashionable tote bags, adorable teddy bears and even bean bag chairs. These carefully handcrafted gifts will bring comfort to the many homeless and at-risk families and individuals in our community.

InnVision clients are always so appreciative of gifts given with dignity and with them specifically in mind, since it shows the personal thought and care that has been given. If you are interested in planning an event like this, please contact Jaynie Neveras, our Community Relations Manager, by emailing her at JNeveras@InnVision.org or calling 408-380-8718.

InnVision Food Programs Need Your Help!

This year, we are expanding the Can and Produce Market program that provides nutritious and healthy food to homeless and at-risk families at the Georgia Travis Center. We plan to operate the program every Thursday between 9 am and 12 pm, but we need volunteers to help! Please fill out an online application or email our volunteer coordinator if you or a group are able to assist in the distribution of vital food.

InnVision can also use any new or like-new kitchen items, especially:

  • Chef's cooking knives
  • Potato peelers
  • Can openers (hand or electric)
  • Aprons
  • Kitchen towels or white hand towels
  • Mugs
  • Spoons and forks
Sobrato Family Foundation Your Donation Can Go Further

Thanks to a challenge grant from the

Sobrato Family Foundation,

your gift can go further than ever.

The foundation will match donations from any new or lapsed donor.  So, if you have never given to InnVision or have not given since July 1, 2010, they will match your generosity dollar-for-dollar.  In addition, if you increase your giving for the period July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012, the Sobrato Family Foundation will match half.  How about that for an easy way to have an impact?

If you are not able to give now, please think about telling your friends how they can help the community by giving to InnVision the Way Home.
