NEW EVENT: Closing the Food Gap with Author Mark Winne, July 23
|
|
July 23rd Issue Forum to examine food access plus showcase locally grown crops
ALF and Valley Vision invite you to this special joint forum with
award-winning author and nationally renowned policy expert Mark Winne,
author of "Closing the Food Gap; Resetting the Table in the Land of Plenty," to share his perspectives and answer your questions about this emerging topic.
Food access is one of the nation's hottest public policy topics:
- The imbalance between food consumed and food imported carries massive economic, land use, and environmental costs.
- Skyrocketing rates of obesity and the life-ending diseases it causes have become a leading public health concern here.
- And we're discovering that far too many people in the underserved areas of our region simply can't access healthy foods.
Find out what YOU can do to support local agriculture and how to get involved with a Valley Vision initiative to to improve food access. Get tickets.

Nominate for Class XIV: Deadline July 17 |
|
Selection Committee needs to hear from you with nominations of excellent leaders
With Class XII in the ranks of Sr. Fellows and Class XIII ready to head to the Wilderness in August, it's time to turn our attention to developing Class XIV (that's 14 for the Roman-Numerically challenged).
ALF needs to hear from you about regional leaders whom you feel would make excellent Fellows. Don't assume the selection committee will know them -- Nominate them with sufficient information to make clear their value to the region. Sing their praises and the selection committee will take notice.
Focus groups will convene again this year, so to make sure your nominee gets the most attention, complete your nomination by July 17. And keep an eye out for the focus group invitations -- we encourage you to participate in the selection process.

EVENT PHOTOS: ALF Summer Party a HOT Success! |
|
ALF Families have a great time together, even on the hottest day of the year
Many, many thanks go out to Jim (VIII) and Diane Williams for hosting the Summer Party at their home in Loomis -- a beautiful setting for a great day!
Much appreciation goes to Sharon Roseme (II) and the Placer Fellows who worked so hard on all of the planning and logistics to enable such a successful event.
And thanks to our official photographer, Class VII's Stephen Tse, you can re-live the event or see what you missed. View Stephen's pictures.
Thanks also to Jim's son Matt, owner and chef extraordinaire of Cafe Zorro, who fed us the best of Placer County's summer bounty.
Be sure to drop by his restaurant some time and offer your appreciation!

Don't Forget Your Annual Sr. Fellows Dues Invoice (Mailed Three Weeks Ago) |
|
ALF depends on its members' support -- help us match the total of approximately 80% of local ALFers who paid dues last year
Annual Sr. Fellows dues notices for '09/'10 went out three weeks ago. Please keep an eye out for the invoice and consider making an additional gift to support scholarships to the Sr. Fellows program events and the work of ALF.
Dues remain $240 for the year or $120 for Fellows who have moved out of the region, and dues scholarships are also available. You can pay by check or credit card, or consider automatic monthly installments either by credit card or drafted directly from your bank account -- see the enclosures in the invoice mailer or call the ALF office to find out how. You can also pay online.
Thank you in advance for your support. If we can be of any assistance, please contact the ALF office.
