NEW EVENT: Swimming in a Sea of Red -- Fixing California's Budget

Jim MayerIs California destined to swim forever in a sea of red ink?

California Forward has some proposals on budget reform for California.  Join ALF Senior Fellows for a thought-provoking and informative discussion on California Forward's budget reform efforts and find out how you can be involved.

California Forward Executive Director Jim Mayer schedules a return engagement to ALF, Friday, April 24 at 8:00 am at Drexel University, 1 Capitol Mall Suite 200.  (Street parking in Old Sacramento free until 10 AM.)

Last November, Jim Mayer spoke at the ALF Senior Fellows Retreat in Napa where we considered the challenge of governance through the lens of two significant issues impacting Californians: education and health care.  On April 24, Jim will discuss proposals to improve California's budget process and current legislation that has recently been formulated to this end.

Nominate for Class XIV

Class XIV logoSelection Committee needs to hear from you with nominations of excellent leaders

With Class XII in the ranks of Sr. Fellows and Class XIII ready to get going in May, it's time to turn our attention to developing Class XIV (that's 14 for the Roman-Numerically challenged).

ALF needs to hear from you about regional leaders whom you feel would make excellent Fellows.  Don't assume the selection committee will know them -- Nominate them with sufficient information to make clear their value to the region.  Sing their praises and the selection committee will take notice.

Focus groups will convene again this year, so to make sure your nominee gets the most attention, complete your nomination by April 30.  And keep an eye out for the focus group dates -- we encourage you to participate in the selection process.

Event Follow-up & Pictures: Exemplary Leader Award Dinner

Larry Garcia & Pat Fong Kushida
AT&T presented ALF's annual dinner celebrating the Sac Asian Chamber CEO and Class IV member

Pat Fong Kushida received the 2009 ALF Exemplary Leader Award March 26 at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Sacramento with over 400 ALF members and Sacramento's boundary-crossing regional leadership attending the celebration filled with inspirational words, warm friends, and incredible networking possibilities.

AT&TThe annual dinner, presented by AT&T, raised nearly $120,000 to fund scholarships for community leaders who would not have otherwise be able to participate in ALF's unique program and network.

Official ALF photographer Stephen Tse, Class VII, captured the fun through his camera lens.  View the photo album.

Event Follow-up: Pictures from Class XII's Commencement Dinner

Class XII GraduationClass XII joins the Sr. Fellows' network, creates outstanding book as a testament to their Wilderness Experience

Class XII fully joined the ALF Sr. Fellows network last Friday night as several dozen spouses, Sr. Fellows, and board members celebrated and welcomed them.  Brian Baker, Bill Mueller, Jennifer Baker, and Margaret Fortune provided insight into their personal experience and their class' year together during moving commencement speeches.

Check out Stephen Tse's photos for a look into the event and definitely make a mental note to join us next year!

Part of their final act as a first-year Fellows class was to create a stunning book about their Wilderness Experience, called Starfish on the Sierra, and reflects the power and impact of the keystone of the ALF program.  Check it out with a Class XII member, or you can see the first few picture pages and order your own copy.

Class X Challenges Other Classes to Support Sacto. Youth Leadership

youthThe Sr. Fellows of Class X invite others to join them by investing in our future leaders

What began as a Class VI's class project to recreate their ALF experience for inner city at-risk youth, the Sacramento Youth Leadership Program was designed to instill leadership and decision-making skills.

At the urging of the youth participants, Class VI committed to continuing the program.  Over the past four years, they have worked with nearly 125 youth most of whom remain committed to staying in touch, promoting youth leadership in their home organizations and in the region, and participating in local youth initiatives.

Class X challenges all other ALF-MV classes to match its $1,500 contribution to underwrite the cost of one youth's participation in 2009.  Class X's  contribution  will  be made from its ongoing class project, the Change for Change Fund at the Regional Foundation.
