Summer Academy Update
Many of you who have supported Atlantic Street Center for a long time know about our summer school program, Summer Academy. The program normally takes place for 5 weeks in the summer and is geared toward students in grades K-7 who are struggling in school. We wanted to let all of our friends and supporters know that we have decided that we will not offer Summer Academy this year. However, we are already working closely with another non-profit organization to plan the 2011 Summer Academy Program and the program will come back next year, better than ever!
We will be offering the kids we serve many other wonderful activities this summer, including a new educational program for pre-K children, a summer experience for teenagers, a week at Islandwood camp for ten youth, and our annual volunteer-led Tennis Clinic that teaches tennis to low-income kids. If you have donated to Summer Academy in the past, we would love your support of these enriching and educational summer activities. Please click here to give online right now. |

Juneteenth Festivities!
On June 17, the Rainier Beach Family Center hosted their annual Juneteenth celebration. Juneteenth commemorates the abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865. This is the tenth year that Atlantic Street Center has celebrated Juneteenth. This year, Seattlepi.com featured the event in their Big Blog! The photo at right is courtesy of Seattlepi.com.
Thank you to everyone who came out and helped us celebrate Juneteenth! |

Celebrating Success
Teens as Parents Program
Atlantic Street Center's Teens as Parents Program at our Rainier Beach Family Center offers young parents the support, education and resources they need to raise healthy, happy children while also focusing on earning a diploma or GED. The program began ten years ago and serves about 40 teen parents each year. This year, reports Parent Support Specialist Michelle Mitchell-Brannon, the program has celebrated some remarkable successes! "In June, nine teen moms and soon-to-be moms graduated from high school - one as Valedictorian!" said Michelle. "Two others graduated from technical college and one was offered a job at Swedish Hospital and the other was offered a paid internship at Group Health Hospital." Michelle also helped three homeless teen moms get into transitional housing. "One of the teens even managed to graduate from high school while she was still homeless!"
Can you help? The Teens as Parents Program is in need of donations of formula and diapers for the young children of participants. The preferred formula is Similac Sensitive and diapers are needed in sizes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (sizes 5 and 6 are especially needed). If you can help, or if you'd like more information about the program, please contact Michelle Mitchell-Brannon at (206) 723-1301 or email her.
Life Skills for Healthy Relationships
Atlantic Street Center's Counseling Department offered a new group called "Life Skills for Healthy Relationships" and it was a big hit for teen girls aged 13-18! The group, conceived and led by therapist Caroline Plummer and case manager Danielle Wright, was expected to serve 6-8 young women. Instead, 23 young women took part in the group! The group tackled such tough topics as teen dating violence, safety planning, navigating the legal process, and protection orders.
"Caroline and Danielle saw the need for this group and they pulled out all the stops to make it happen," said Ralph Fragale, Manager of the Counseling Services Program. "They brought in guest speakers, arranged for food, and provided gift cards to those youth who had perfect attendance" The best part, though, was the feedback from participants. "There were some who said they now recognize that the things they've lived with for a long time are wrong and they plan to bring an end to it," said Ralph.
What's more, Caroline and Danielle have already fielded calls from several other organizations interested in offering the group. Kudos to Caroline and Danielle! To learn more, please contact Caroline or Danielle at (206) 329-2050 or send them an email.
Youth Recognition Block Party On May 20, participants, family, friends and staff gathered for a block party to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of 56 youth participants. South Atlantic Street was closed so we could bring in bouncy houses, barbecues, face painting and other fun stuff. Congratulations to all the youth who were recognized! |
