Continuing our tradition of running games no other clubs offer, we will hold our first "Par" bridge event on Monday, August 23.
In a par contest, all pairs compete against a computer generated "par" score on each board. The par contract on a deal is whatever contract results from optimal bidding, by both sides, which neither side could improve by further bidding. Par will be either the optimum contract by one side or a doubled penalty, which loses less than the value of the optimum contract, by the other side.
Your score on each board is compared to the par score and the results are calculated by IMPs.
At the conclusion of the game, everyone will receive a handout with the par score on each board explained. |
 | How a Par Contest Works |
North Deals N-S Vul | ♠ Q 10 5 ♥ J 7 4 2 ♦ A K 8 6 3 ♣ 3 |
♠ A 9 4 2 ♥ 8 3 ♦ 9 4 ♣ K 9 7 6 4
|
|
♠ 7 3 ♥ 10 ♦ J 10 7 5 2 ♣ A Q 10 8 2
| | ♠ K J 8 6 ♥ A K Q 9 6 5 ♦ Q ♣ J 5 |
|
Here is an example taken from a deal at the club this week. Can you guess what the par score on this board would be? What is the par contract?
Scroll down for the answer. |
 | Silver Point STaC - August 16-20 |

Another chance to earn those coveted Silver Points at the club is coming up next month. We will run Silver Point events every afternoon, Monday through Friday. Mark your calendars now! |
 | North American Pairs Added to Schedule |
Due to popular demand, I have added some North American Pairs qualifying games to our schedule. These events pay extra points and the awards are ½ red and ½ black. There is no extra charge for these games.

North Deals N-S Vul | ♠ Q 10 5 ♥ J 7 4 2 ♦ A K 8 6 3 ♣ 3 |
♠ A 9 4 2 ♥ 8 3 ♦ 9 4 ♣ K 9 7 6 4
|
|
♠ 7 3 ♥ 10 ♦ J 10 7 5 2 ♣ A Q 10 8 2
| | ♠ K J 8 6 ♥ A K Q 9 6 5 ♦ Q ♣ J 5 |
|
(Deal repeated for convenience.)
The par score on this deal is +500 for N-S because the par contract is 6♣ doubled, down three, by E-W.
Suppose you were sitting East-West. If you allowed N-S to bid and make 5♥ (-650), you would lose 4 IMPs on the board since you had a profitable save in 6♣ (-500) available. Conversely, the N-S pair would be +4 IMPs.

After North's limit raise, East, taking full advantage of the favorable vulnerability, jumps to 4NT. This is the Unusual Notrump, showing at least 5-5 in the minors. When South bids 5♥, West sacrifices in 6♣.
You can follow the bidding and play of this board with the Bridge Movie on the website.
Incidentally, when this board was played Thursday, Arnita Aiken & Gerry Tatz were the only pair to find the sacrifice. Well done! |
