Deal of the Week |
Saturday, September 27

My good friend Bernie Chazen likes to say, "The penalty double has died and gone to heaven." I think he really means it died and went the other way. Here is a case in point.
After North opened 1 , East jumped to 4 . I am guessing the auction started this way at every table. It seems to be a knee-jerk reaction to most players to preempt at the four-level whenever they hold an eight-card suit.
At unfavorable vulnerability, this was a stretch. East had five losers, and should not be overbidding by two tricks. If he were doubled and set two, it would be worth more (500) than any game North-South could make. As you can see from the traveler, this is exactly what happened at table 2.
At most tables however, it was East's lucky day. It was practically impossible for North or South to reasonably make a penalty double.

Bridge Ace Tip of the Week |
Most beginning and intermediate players do not play negative doubles high enough. Many play them only through the three level. Even the ACBL Standard Yellow Card lists negative doubles through only 2 .
If you want to be able to better compete with high-level preempts, you should play high-level negative doubles. | |
