Greetings!

This week's Deal of the Week features a most unusual action: a preemptive opening bid in fourth seat!

Board 13

Take a look at the West hand and imagine the bidding went three passes to you. What action, if any would you take?

The idea in fourth seat is to open the bidding when you think you are a favorite to make a plus score. If you think the hand belongs to the opponents, you should pass out the hand in order to avoid a minus score.

Preempts in the fourth seat are very rare. They do occur occasionally though; for example when one has a near-opening bid with a long suit, but is reluctant to open on the one-level for fear of being outbid by perceived opponents' major. West, for example, might reasonably open 3Diamond in fourth seat, hoping to silence the opponents' with their presumed spades and/or hearts.

At the club, West opened 3Diamond in fourth seat and, after two passes, South (who apparently forgot to open 2 at his first turn) reasonably chose to balance with 3, which was passed out.

The result? Down one, +100 for East/West. Mission accomplished. West was right to open, rather than pass in fourth seat.

Silver Points (no Shadow)

Every session this week, Monday through Saturday, will be a Silver Point event. To kick off Silver Point Week right, Bernie Chazen will give a free lecture at Bridge Ace on Monday, August 11 at 11:45 am,  If you have ever attended one of his lectures, you know how much fun they are.

Unlike other clubs, we will not charge an extra fee for these games. As always at Bridge Ace, your regular $6 card fee will apply. I will personally absorb the extra ACBL fee. Don't miss this opportunity to obtain those elusive Silver Points!
Cheers,
