Deal of the Week |
 |
For a change, this deal was not actually played at Bridge Ace this week. Rather, it is one of the lesson hands that Zeke Jabbour presented in his talk Friday at the club.
Zeke stressed the fact that counting is the single most important skill a bridge player can possess. Counting comes in basically two forms. You can count the distribution of the opposing hands and you can also count their high cards. This is an example of the later. Zeke made the point that on this deal, at trick one, declarer should be able to place all the high cards in the opponents' hands.
Here was the auction:

West led the Q.
Questions declarer should ask himself -
Answer: From a sequence of QJ or better.
Answer: It is not clear, but East should hold either the A or K because, if West held them both, he would have led one. Ask yourself - what side suit would you lead QJx or AKx?
Answer: Let's see, declarer has ten high-card points and dummy has eleven. That's a total of twenty-one. If East has three, that adds up to twenty-four. West opened 1NT (15-17). Unless someone is lying, West must have every other missing honor.
Once declarer has asked himself those questions, the hand plays like an open book. He should win the first trick in his hand with the K and lead a club towards the KJ72 in dummy. If West plays the A (and presumably returns another heart), declarer should win the A in dummy, return a spade to the A - no sense trying what he already knows must be a losing finesse - and lead another club towards the KJ7. When West plays low, finesse the J with impunity (as Zeke put it), and pitch his losing heart on the K.
Ho Hum... making three. Just another routine hand. |
Bridge Ace Tip of the Week Sometimes what your opponent doesn't do (in this case not leading a high heart) is as revealing as what he actually does do. |

Greetings!
Zeke Jabbour lecturing at Bridge Ace
Grand Life Master Zeke Jabbour was at Bridge Ace Friday, August 1. He delivered a terrific lecture which at various times had us scratching our heads in wonder, shedding tears, and laughing out loud. I don't think any of us will think about fava beans the same way ever again!
We had two sections of duplicate after Zeke's wonderful talk. Many, many thanks to Zeke. |

Bernie Chazen gives a lesson at Bridge Ace
Bernie Chazen will give a free lecture at Bridge Ace every month. If you have ever attended one of his lectures, you know how much fun they are.
Bernie's next free lecture at Bridge Ace will be Monday, August 11 at 11:45 am, just in time to kick off Silver Point Week. Every session that week, Monday through Saturday, will be a Silver Point event.
Mark your calendars now. We will host the Silver Point STaC (Sectional Tournament at Clubs) the week of August 11-16. Unlike other clubs, we will not charge an extra fee for these games. As always at Bridge Ace, your regular $6 card fee will apply. I will personally absorb the extra ACBL fee. Don't miss this opportunity to obtain those elusive Silver Points!
We are planning a special Labor Day luncheon Monday, September 1. Bernie will give another free lecture that day at 11:45 am.
In the meantime, here is a link to Bernie's own web site. |
Congratulations to Daryla Kenith, August Bridge Ace of the Month.
Cheers,
