Ice Cream Social - for Adults!

Ice cream & strawberry wine
St. James' strawberry wine poured over Central Dairy vanilla ice cream makes a sweet, delicious treat!

June is National Dairy Month, so we thought this would be a perfect time for you to host your very own ice cream sundae party! In addition to the typical yummy, sugary indulgences, this type of ice cream social allows you to be a bit more creative!

Use Missouri fruit wine to create a rainbow of flavors to amp up your dish of ice cream. Simply pour the fruit wine on top, or create a tasty sauce. Here is one recipe for strawberry wine sauce. However, the possibilities are endless. Try using Missouri fruit wine as the theme for your next ice cream social!

You can also serve Missouri sparkling wine to cleanse your guest's palates after their sweet treat. Follow these steps to create the perfect "adults-only" ice cream social:
  • Pick out a cute invitation. Check out this awesome idea.
  • Purchase several flavors of local ice cream. (Side note: June 7 is National Ice Cream Day!)
  • Settle on the toppings that you want to serve. Or, ask guests to bring a topping of their own. Be sure to include fresh fruits.
  • Shortly before the social, make your Missouri fruit wine sauce.
  • Arrange toppings and ice cream on top of a plastic tablecloth - things are bound to get sticky.
  • Enjoy!
Happy Father's Day!

How will you celebrate dad? This year, Father's Day is on Sunday, June 17. And whether you are giving thanks for your father, an uncle or another father-like figure in your life, make it extra special with Missouri wine!

Join Mount Pleasant Estates for a Father's Day BBQ, or check out Jowler Creek's "Cheers to Fathers" celebration. You can also take in the sun on the patio of any Missouri winery near you while sipping on some quality vino!

Here are just a few other fun ideas to honor dad this year:

Music Man
: Go see a show! Many wineries host local bands on the weekends. Check our events page to see what's happening near you.

Movie Time
: Catch an action flick. Follow up the film with dinner and local wine! Top off the evening by sipping a dessert wine.

Gone Golfing
: Need we say more? Hit the greens early and cool off with some Missouri sparkling wine in the evening!

Barbecue Bond
: Hang out with dad in the backyard while grilling burgers and brats. Toss the ball around for old time's sake!

Happy Father's Day from Missouri Wines!

Winetinerary

Our state is home to five great
wine trails, but with so many wineries in the state, there are other wine regions that are worth registering on your radar. With summer among us, we're featuring a different winery itinerary every month. So, grab your passport, get some friends, and go!

Southeast Region

Right off of Highway 44 is the historic St. James wine region in Phelps County. Italian immigrants established vineyards in the St. James area in the late 1800's. Today there are four wineries in the small town of St. James and a total of six wineries in the Ozark Highlands American Viticulture Area (AVA).

Start the day taking in the scenic countryside at Three Squirrels Winery just a few miles outside the city limits of St. James. Next, head to Heinrichshaus Vineyard and Winery and get to know Heinrich, owner and winemaker, born and raised in Germany's Rhine Valley. If you are hungry for lunch, make your way to Meramec Vineyards for wine and food from Bistro d' Vine. While you are there, take in the art gallery and the demonstration vineyard. Next, visit the largest winery in the state, St. James Winery, and sample their many award-winning wines.

Nearby Crawford County proudly boasts two wineries. Head northeast to Leasburg, home of Belmont Winery, where you can enjoy the beautiful views of the rolling Ozark hills and the serenity of a country farm. A few miles south, in the town of Steelville, you'll find the romantic Peaceful Bend Winery perched above the clear, spring-fed waters of the Meramec River. If you have time, plan a float trip or stay the night in one of the nearby cabins. Camping, anyone?

Don't forget your Missouri Wines iPhone and Android app for easy navigation! And as always, call ahead to confirm winery hours and events.

Locapair
In fervent support of the locavore movement, each month we pair a Missouri wine varietal with a local food favorite. Hence: Locapair. Enjoy.

Rosé (roh-say)

Rosé wines often combine the best of both worlds: the lightness of a white wine (like Vidal Blanc) and the depth and boldness of a red wine (like Chambourcin). These wines pair well with a wide range of foods, from light fish to heavier pork or beef dishes. It also complements spicy Thai or Mexican inspired foods. It's also a great sipping wine to enjoy on the patio.

Cave Vineyard produces a White Chambourcin, which won a gold medal at the Missouri Wine Competition in 2011. Stone Hill Winery makes an award-winning Brut Rosé. Edg-Clif Farms and Vineyard also produces a notable Chambourcin Rosé, and Hermanhoff Winery produces their Vin Gris, a dry Rosé.

Drink this with: Fried Fish

Host a fish fry with family and friends to celebrate the arrival of summer (or Father's Day)! Try this recipe for a chili lime battered fish. The recipe suggests tilapia, but local trout or other white, flaky fish will work, too. Choose a semi-dry Rosé to pair with your slightly spicy fish!

Vino Vocab

Rounded:
A well-balanced wine with fruit, tannin, acid, sugar, alcohol all present but not dominating the make-up of the wine lending to a feeling of completeness.
