Summer Skies & Missouri Wines

With sunny summer days ahead and so many delightful wineries throughout Missouri, how can one decide just where to go and when? Simple. Use the online Missouri Wine Trip Planner.

Click boxes to narrow down your selection by region, type of wine, or amenities. The Trip Planner will then deliver a list of suggestions based on the criteria you entered.

The Trip Planner is particularly helpful for selecting a winery for special occasions.

Looking for some ideas for ways to enjoy Missouri wines and wineries in the coming months? Here are few to consider:

  • Book a Missouri winery for a graduation party.

maifest

Maifest is an ancient tradition celebrating nature's bright reawakening after winter's cold darkness. Maifest continues to be enthusiastically celebrated throughout Germany -- and throughout Missouri's own German-settled village of Hermann.

According to local historians, the first  Maifest in Hermann was celebrated sometime in the early 1870s as a last-day-of-school picnic for children, at which time girls in new white dresses and boys in their Sunday best were given a Maifest badge by the teacher and an American flag by a school board member.

The children then paraded to the city park, where the festivities began when a bugler blew a special call and the children lined up their treats: knockwurst on a bun, a glass of pink lemonade colored with wine, and an orange.

Following these treats, the children spent the afternoon playing games and visiting the concession stand, where 20 cents bought all the popcorn and candy a child could eat.

Join Hermann in celebrating Maifest 2011, May 21-22, where spring will once again be welcomed, German-style, with oom-pah bands, brats on the grill, and much more.

enchilada

Congratulations to Kenton Foster
for our recipe of the month

Our featured recipe of the month comes from Kenton Foster.
His original Sinful Chicken Enchiladas dish caught our attention and tempted our taste buds. So we are adding his recipe to our online recipe collection - and sending him a Missouri Wine-themed gift.

Sinful Chicken Enchiladas

Kenton suggests pairing with a nice Missouri Traminette.

Ingredients:

1 small onion, chopped

2 TBS vegetable oil

1 clove garlic

1 cup tomato puree

1 1/2 tsp cumin

1 can green chilies (4 oz)

2 cups chicken breast, cooked and chopped

˝ tsp salt

2 cups heavy cream

1 cube chicken bouillon

10-12 flour tortillas
4 oz. Monterey Jack
cheese

1 avocado, peeled and diced

1 can black olives (2.5 oz)

Directions:

Sauté onions in oil until translucent. Add garlic, tomato puree, cumin, chilies, chicken, and salt. Simmer 8 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat cream with bouillon cube. Pour into a shallow dish.

Dip tortilla into cream. Place 2 TBS chicken filling into tortilla.

Roll and place in baking pan.

Pour remaining cream over enchiladas. Sprinkle with cheese.

Bake at 350ş F for 25-30 minutes, until cheese is melted and browned.

Serve with avocado and black olive slices.
