Aweigh With Missouri Wine
The US Navy's newest nuclear attack submarine, the USS Missouri, has had a taste of Missouri sparkling wine across her bow. Stone Hill Winery sparkling wine was used to christen the USS Missouri December 5, at the official ceremony at the Navy base in Groton, CT.

Christening a Navy vessel named for Missouri is more than just historic for Stone Hill Winery; it's history repeating itself. A bottle of Stone Hill Winery's "Pearl of Missouri" sparkling wine was used to christen the first USS Missouri battleship in December 1901.

"It's an honor to have our wine chosen for such a historic event," said Jim Held, co-owner of Stone Hill Winery with his wife Betty since 1965. "It's a great tradition that we're proud to take part in. It's not only a privilege for Stone Hill Winery; it's a great way to showcase Missouri and our thriving wine industry as well."

The wine used for the latest christening was
a 2001 Blanc de Blancs Brut-style sparkling wine made from Vidal grapes.

Around the World With Missouri Wine
All over the world this time of year people enjoy the holidays with a special meal. Whether it's Christmas or a New Year, everything about these meals says celebrate: celebrate family, celebrate food, celebrate life. Join the celebration and raise a glass of Missouri wine in a toast to international holiday fare!

Australia: It's summer down under and holiday meals are often enjoyed outside. Pair your shrimp off the barbie with a glass of crisp Vidal.

China: Chinese New Year is the most important festival of the year. Diners celebrating the Chinese New Year eat oysters, which are believed to bring good fortune. Oysters with a Missouri sparkling wine are divine.

Germany: Stollen, Germany's most well-known Christmas bread, is a folded yeast pastry filled with a plethora of goodies like dried cherries, raisins, almonds and almond paste. Sip a Missouri Catawba or try a Traminette with your stollen.

Isreal: Israeli cuisine is diverse, made up of dishes brought by Jewish immigrants from around the world. This time of year, the holiday of Hanukkah is marked by eating foods cooked in oil, like Latkes (potato pancakes) to commemorate the miracle of a small quantity of oil lasting eight days. Savory potato pancakes pair well with Chardonel.

Mexico: Greet the season with Feliz Navidad and follow the Mexican yuletide custom of making and eating tamales. Traditionally served on Christmas Eve, friends and family gather in the days before for marathon tamale making sessions. Try a Vignoles with the spicy heat of the tamales.

Kenya: Christmas dinner is likely to be nyama choma, a grilled then baked meat dish made with either beef or goat. Nothing beats grilled beef or goat with a glass of Missouri Norton.

Missouri Wines Win BIG
Four Missouri wines earned prestigious Jefferson Cup honors at the recent Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition held in Kansas City, Mo in mid-November: Augusta Winery 2007 Estate Bottled Norton, Stone Hill Winery 2008 Vignoles and both St. James Winery Velvet Red and Friendship School White. Missouri was one of only four states represented in the competition with multiple Jefferson Cup awards for their wineries.

The Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition is an invitational wine competition open to a select number of wineries across the countries that represent the best of commercial American wine. This year out of over 600 chosen wines entered, 78 wines were selected by the five judging committees as Jefferson Cup nominees. Out of those 78 honored wines, the judges collectively picked 15 wines to be awarded the Jefferson Cup.  In addition to the four Missouri Jefferson Cup winners, seven other Missouri wines were under consideration for top honors: Crown Valley Winery 2005 Museum Collection Chardonel, Stone Hill Winery 2008 Traminette, St. James Winery Pink Catawba, Augusta Winery 2006 Chambourcin, Crown Valley Winery 2005 Museum Collection Meritage, Adam Puchta Winery 2004 Estate Bottled Norton and Stone Hill Winery 2008 Late Harvest Vignoles.
