![]() OCTOBER 9 - POST SEASON SHOWDOWN
THIS SATURDAY NIGHT — DOUBLE HEADER!
MAYHEM & BOMBSHELLS DEFEND GOTHAM Double your derby pleasure — the Gotham Girls host out-of-town squads in two-fer showcase this coming Saturday night at Hunter College. First, the Brooklyn Bombshells face a challenge from the "Pigeons" of Providence, featuring Craisy Dukes, one of the most dynamic and energetic skaters in the WFTDA's east region.

Then the Manhattan Mayhem host the Suburban Brawl of Suburbia Roller Derby. Suburbia's All-Stars visited Gotham once before, in Spring 2009, when Dina Sore Jr., Suffah Kate, IV Drop, Domestic Violet, and other Westchester ladies pushed the Wall Street Traitors to the limit before falling in a 54-38 exhibition at LIU-Brooklyn.
"The thing that’s so different and why the Post-season Showdown is so wonderful is that typically you have a thousand people and a portion of the crowd is rooting for you and the other one is rooting for the other team, but for this, there’s a thousand people rooting for the home team ... when Montreal came [2008], they had, like, five fans — and they were the loudest fans ever — but they had to come and hear a thousand people screaming ‘Bombshells, Bombshells.’"Unite behind your GGRD teams and to wave good-bye to a handful of retiring Mayhem and Bombshell skaters making their last appearances on skates. Saturday, August 7th - at Hunter College, 68th and Lexington. Doors at 6:30, first whistle at 8:30. Each bout will consist of two twenty-minute periods. VIP tickets are already sold out; G.A. tickets are $19.99 in advance. TICKETS GOING FAST — AVAILABLE NOW AT GGRDTIX.COM The doubleheader will also be streamed live at Derby News Network, and will be broadcast two weeks later on NYC life (Channel 25 / 22 on Cablevision) as part of GGRD's regular programming schedule — now five nights a week at 1:30am. BOXING GYM - OPENS OCTOBER 22
Frederick Wiseman's hypnotic new film is about an Austin, TX institution: Lord's Gym, which was founded 16 years ago by professional boxer Richard Lord. People of all ages, races, ethnicities and social classes come to Lord's: doctors, lawyers, judges, businessmen and kids all learn to spar alongside fellow amateurs and trained professionals. Wiseman depicts the gym as a uniquely American melting pot, a place where people meet to talk and train, and shows us that all the world's a ring.
Directed by Frederick Wiseman; a Zipporah Films release. Opening October 22 at the IFC Center. For other release dates and more info, check out www.facebook.com/BoxingGymFilm. |
