The 2009 GGRD season reached an impossibly heart-pounding climax when the Bronx Gridlock and Manhattan Mayhem battled for The Golden Skate on Saturday, November 21st.

The Bronx, skating short-handed due to a late-season injury bug, borrowed rookie sensation OMG WTF from the Brooklyn Bombshells, and took an early lead before the Mayhem's offense, led by Em Dash, Polly Gone, and Fisti Cuffs, cruised to a 42-point halftime lead. The halftime tap performance by the Minsky Sisters gave the cabbie defense time to regroup, and the gals in checkers roared back to outscore the orange inmates by 53 to take their second title in the last three seasons.

Bonnie Thunders tallied an astounding eighty-eight points at the jammer position, setting a new league record in the process. Five-year veteran Ginger Snap was voted the Gridlock's MVP for her dynamic blocking, and Polly Gone, with fifty jamming points of her own, won Mayhem's MVP honors.

Miss the bout? Read about it through the eyes of a new derby fan as Linnea Covington wraps up her season-long coverage of the Gotham Girls in New York Press.
"In those eight games, I learned a lot about roller derby, but not just the rules and what those crazy hand gestures the referees use mean. I discovered the raw fervor the Gotham Girls have for their sport, the camaraderie and love for each other, and their all out joy of kicking ass on skates... In the end, it’s an incredible sport played by amazing people and I am happy to have spent a season dipping in."
Additional press coverage of the bout included photo galleries in Sports Illustrated and Metromix.com.

WFTDA NATIONALS 2009
Bonnie Thunders jumps at Nationals

The WFTDA's 2008 Champions - the Gotham Girls Roller Derby All-Stars, charged into Philly's Declaration of Derby tournament hoping to repeat as the nation's champions.

The tournament started well for Gotham, with a first round victory over Detroit, 187-38. Gotham's defense held the Detroit skaters to just 13 points in the second period, and prospects looked good for another deep tournament run.

But Gotham's next matchup brought a challenge from the top seed of the WFTDA's Western Region, the Oly Rollers of Olympia, Washington, a relatively new squad composed largely of veteran national champion speed competitors. The Oly Rollers played Gotham to a near-tie in the first period but pulled away in period two to advance to the national semi-finals, 136-105. The ladies from Olympia went on to defeat the Denver Roller Dolls by 87 and the Texas Rollergirls by 78 claim the 2009 national title.

Congratulations to the Oly Rollers, and Gotham fans can rest assured that New York's All-Stars will be aggressively attacking the track once again in 2010, competing at the very highest level the sport has to offer. And big thanks to the fans who raided Philadelphia to shout for the Gotham Girls!
