The regular season wraps up with a fall brawl between the three-time league champion Queens of Pain and the fan-favorite sailorette Brooklyn Bombshells.

Queens and Brooklyn both feature posses of impressive rookies completing their first GGRD campaigns. The skaters in black and in blue are eager to end their league seasons with a victory before sharing the spotlight next month in GGRD's annual post-season double-header (October 24, against a special guest foe announced below).

This bout promises a great selection of raffle and trivia prizes, VIP gifts, and promotions building excitement for the premiere of Whip It, the Fox Searchlight feature film opening October 2.

Halftime will feature a triumphant return performance by the highly popular hula-hooping dervish Miss Saturn. DJ Gefilte Funk will spin the music before and during the bout, including tunes featured on the Whip It motion picture soundtrack, available for discounted purchase below. (NOTE: the originally announced halftime performance from Lady Circus is being rescheduled.)

This faceoff takes place at the Hunter College Sportsplex, at the southwest corner of Lexington Ave and 68th Street in Manhattan, directly at the 68th street stop on the (6) subway line and near the (F) train stop at 63rd street.

The Hunter College Sportsplex is wheelchair-accessible; for specific questions about access, leave a message at the Gotham Girls hotline: (888) 830-2253.

GGRD ALL-STARS FALL TO PHILLY BUT STORM TO NATIONALS
GGRD vs. Philly - photo by Brian Macke
WFTDA East Region Finals 2009 -- Beatrix Slaughter tiptoes the line while Dara Licks tumbles over Philly teammate Persephone. Photo: Brian Macke
At the 2009 WFTDA East Regionals, the Gotham Girls All-Stars first trampled the Rhode Island Riveters, 185-25, followed by a big 154-53 victory over the Boston Massacre.

But then the Gotham Girls Roller Derby All-Stars' 2-year-old winning streak came to an end at the WFTDA's 2009 East Regional tournament, as the Philly Rollergirls finally toppled their oldest rivals in a riveting 90-89 victory decided in its very final moments.

Many veteran derby observers felt that this bout eclipsed Gotham's June 2009 victory over Texas as "The Best Bout Ever," thanks to its dramatic turns, hard hits, focused strategy, and thrilling, fast-paced action. With this young sport growing as quickly as it is, who knows when derby fans will see the NEXT "Best Bout Ever?"

Both Philly and Gotham advance to November's 2009 WFTDA Nationals, with Philly as the #1 seed from the East Region and Gotham as #2. Congratulations to the Philly Roller Girls!

Read the archived text boutcast and watch the archived video of this epic battle at Derby News Network. Video archive of the complete bout is currently available at justin.tv.

Gotham's first round matchup at Nationals will be on November 13th against the Detroit Derby Girls, by virtue of Detroit's #3 finish at this last weekend's North Central tournament, the Brawl of America.

A victory on Friday would set the GGRD All-Stars up to play two more bouts on Saturday, November 14 against the very best teams in the WFTDA. Get down to Philly to support the defending national champions -- go to the 2009 Nationals web site to buy tickets.
BE A GOTHAM GIRL IN 2010 • SKILLS NIGHTS AND TRYOUT DATES
tryouts
Suzy Hotrod and Ginger Snap put Alaskan skaters through their paces at last month's clinics hosted by the Rage City Rollergirls of Anchorage, AK.
When you watch the bouts, is it all you can do it sit still in your seat? When you practice your skating, do you picture yourself on the track with your future Gotham Girls teammates? It sounds like you're ready for tryouts.

We hope you've been practicing, 'cause we're ready for you, too. Tryouts for the 2010 season will be on Saturday, December 5th from 12pm to 5pm.

For those who may be a little rusty on wheels, GGRD will be lending a helping hand and offering five 'skills nights' where you can come enjoy a little practice. For the latest info on the upcoming Tryout and Skills Nights schedules, check here. For more general information about trying out to be a Gotham Girl, check here.

rat city
Here come the Sockit Wenches! Photo: Chris Barnes.
The October 24th post-season showdown at Hunter College will feature separate tests for the Queens of Pain and Brooklyn Bombshells against the Sockit Wenches of the Rat City Rollergirls (Seattle, Washington).

These tough, rock 'em sock 'em roller derby gals have come together to steal hearts, burn rubber and leave other teams in the dust. The Sockit Wenches feature some of the West's most exciting players, including the speedy Juliet Bravo, wily Wile E. Peyote, dangerous hitter Anya Heels, and maniacal Swede Hurt.

The Rat City Rollergirls are currently ranked #4 in the WFTDA's Western division and #9 in the Derby News Network's national Power Rankings. Don't miss this East-West showdown in the final 2009 appearance for Queens and Brooklyn. Tickets are on sale here; start planning your Halloween costumes now for the halftime contest!
MOXIE MAYHEM • STACY MORGAN
Moxie Mayhem Donation

The Gotham Girls extend their deepest sympathies to Ms. Morgan's family, friends and Northstar Roller Girls teammates, and encourage all derby friends to contribute to the Zoe Morgan Fund in memory of her mother.

Proceeds from the halftime raffle of this Saturday's Brooklyn-Queens bout will be contributed to the Zoe Morgan Fund.
