The Gotham summer heats up when the Manhattan Mayhem take the track against the Bronx Gridlock. Last season's rookie-heavy Mayhem was bloodied by Gridlock, but in 2009 both teams are undefeated.
The Gridlock has showed its strength time and again, with its intimidating combination of star jammers Bonnie Thunders, Beatrix Slaughter, and Luna Impact (MVP of the July 11th bout against the Brooklyn Bombshells), plus devastating blockers including Ginger Snap and Kandy Kakes. This year, Mayhem has gelled with tight teamwork under the leadership of veterans Sweet Sherry Pie and Fisti Cuffs. Sophomore jammer Em Dash stole the single-bout high scoring record (81) in the Mayhem's first bout of the season, and the blocking of All-Stars Surly Temple, Polly Gone, Miss American Thighs has already proven impassable for Queens and Brooklyn -- how will the Bronx fare? Halftime entertainment will feature a family-friendly performance from THE LOVE SHOW, and DJ Shakey will spin the music before and during the bout. This faceoff takes place at the Hunter College Sportsplex, at the southwest corner of Lexington Ave and 68th Street in Manhattan, directly at the 68th street stop on the (6) subway line and near the (F) train stop at 63rd street. The Hunter College Sportsplex is wheelchair-accessible; for specific questions about access, leave a message at the Gotham Girls hotline: (888) 830-2253. Tickets for this bout available at Brown Paper Tickets Doors @ 6:30, Whistle @ 8:30 General Admission: $19.75 in advance, $23 at the door. VIP trackside seats: $29.75 (advance only) Don't be disappointed at the door - get tickets now! Or, if you prefer not to purchase on line, call Brown Paper Tickets directly at 800-838-3006. The Bronx Gridlock continued their domination over the Brooklyn Bombshells, winning for the fourth consecutive year, 131-56.
When the tattooed Brooklyn babe Carmen Monoxide (No. 12) played against Thunders, the crowed was treated to one of the best, and most showy, moves of the evening. Like a bat out of hell, Bronx captain Kandy Kakes (No. 'Perfect 10') slammed into Monoxide, knocking her clear off the ring, ending the jam. Addressing her fans, Kakes spun around and sent kisses to the cheering crowd. - L. Covington, New York Press
Highest scoring jammers: Luna Impact (Bronx) 50 points (8 jams) Bonnie Thunders (Bronx) 42 points (16 jams) Beatrix Slaughter (Bronx) 30 points (10 jams) Papierschnitt (Brooklyn) 15 points (7 jams) Aunti Christ (Brooklyn) 15 points (8 jams) Carmen Monoxide (Brooklyn) 11 points (8 jams) OMG WTF (Brooklyn) 11 points (8 jams) Team MVPs: Bronx - Luna Impact Brooklyn - OMG WTF At halftime, the capacity crowd was treated to a halftime exhibition of bicycle polo. The Bombshells next play at home against the Queens of Pain on September 26. The Bombshells are also planning a late August vacation sail up to Portland for a friendly scrimmage with Maine Roller Derby's all star team, the Port Authorities. "Whip It" marks the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore, and stars Ellen Page (Juno) as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby. Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Pollock) plays Bliss' disapproving mother, while Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) and Juliette Lewis (Old School) play roller derby stars. Also with Eve, Jimmy Fallon, and Daniel Stern, along with a handful of WFTDA skaters as extras and stunt performers.
