The Gotham Girls present a summertime battle between the new-look Brooklyn Bombshells and the perenially powerful Bronx Gridlock.
The Bombshells feature eight new sailorettes defending the shores of Brooklyn in 2009, while the Bronx Gridlock feature some of the fastest and hardest-hitting veterans in the league. Can the Bombshells swamp the ladies in checkers? Halftime entertainment will feature an exhibition of Bicycle Polo, and DJ Zak will spin the music before and during the bout. This faceoff takes place at the Hunter College Sportsplex, at the southwest corner of Lexington Ave and 68th Street in Manhattan, directly at the 68th street stop on the (6) subway line and near the (F) train stop at 63rd street. After coming up empty in six previous attempts, the Manhattan Mayhem finally came out on top over the Queens of Pain, 120-73.
In a historical game, the Manhattan Mayhem beat the Queens of Pain for the first time in last Saturday’s bout. It looks like it might be Manhattan’s year for roller derby. Not only did they win last month’s game against the Brooklyn Bombshells, but they have a kinetic flow in their teamwork, which clearly shows when they play. - L. Covington, New York Press
Highest scoring jammers: Em Dash (Manhattan) 58 points (17 jams) Suzy Hotrod (Queens) 37 points (16 jams) Polly Gone (Manhattan) 31 points (6 jams) Fisti Cuffs (Manhattan) 19 points (8 jams) Donna Matrix (Queens) 18 points (5 jams) Hyper Lynx (Queens) 17 points (8 jams) Team MVPs: Manhatan - Sweet Sherry Pie Queens - Donna Matrix After a riveting tied first period of action, the capacity crowd was treated to a halftime exhibition of wheelchair rugby, a.k.a. 'Murderball.' The Queens of Pain next play against the Brooklyn Bombshells on September 26, while Manhattan's next appearance is in battle against the Bronx Gridlock on August 8. RECAP: JUNE 19 - GOTHAM ALL-STARS 84, TEXECUTIONERS 76
Gotham's All-Stars extended their winning streak to 16 games with a thrilling 8-point defeat of the #4 Texecutioners from Austin.

The Gotham Girls took an unusual road trip on June 19th to answer a challenge from the originators of the sport of flat track roller derby, the All-Star Texecutioners of the Texas Rollergirls, in a neutral-site bout hosted by Connecticut's CT Rollergirls in Woodbridge.
It was nearly a year ago when the Gotham Girls ushered in the era of East Coast dominance of the sport by shocking the Texecutioners by sixty-one points. The ladies from Austin were eager for revenge, and nearly had it, leading by as many as seventeen points before Gotham's victory comeback. Texas skaters named Kandy Kakes the Gotham MVP, while Gotham's skaters awarded the same honor to Texas's Bullet Tooth Tracy, a long-time friend of the league who trained with the Gotham Girls for several weeks in 2007. Many observers immediately dubbed it the greatest flat track derby game played to date; the skill, speed, ferocity, and discipline on display from both teams was unprecedented. Read the full writeup or re-watch the bout in its entirety at Derby News Network. The Gotham Girls All-Stars next take a summer break to prepare for the 2009 WFTDA East Regionals, September 11-13 in Raleigh, NC, where they plan to defend their WFTDA Regional and National titles. QUICK HITS FROM THE EAST COAST DERBY EXTRAVAGANZA
JUNE 27-28 - EAST COAST DERBY EXTRAVAGANZA IN PHILADELPHIA
The Philly Rollergirls hosted the third annual East Coast Derby Extravaganza on June 27-28 at the Sportsplex in Feasterville, PA. Derby fans were treated to twenty-one full-length WFTDA sanctioned bouts, along with a full lineup of thirty minute exhibitions featuring players from over ninety separate leagues around the world. ![]() Above: GGRD's Wall Street Traitors celebrate their victory with the Traitors' chant of 'BUY ... SELL ... KILL'
In bouts involving 'conventional' GGRD squads, the Gotham Girls asserted their dominance over their regional rivals:
... GGRD's rookies, the 'Meatpacking District,' stomped Philly's rookies 109-2. ... GGRD's Wall Street Traitors defeated on Philly's B-Team, the 'Independence Dolls,' 69-25. ... In an unusual exhibition, Gotham's All-Stars (the WFTDA 2008 national champions) played in a fun scramble with the 2007 national champions, the Kansas City Roller Warriors. Ad-hoc teams (the 'Gothorriors' and the 'Kansorkers') were built with players assigned from both the Gotham and Kansas City rosters. For the record, the Kansorkers, featuring GGRD skaters Beatrix Slaughter, Aunti Christ, Bluebonnet Plague, Hela Skelter, Ginger Snap, Hyper Lynx, and Suzy Hotrod came out on top. Gotham skaters also had fun in mixed-up thirty-minute 'challenge bouts,' where age-old rivalries were symbolically resolved on the track: ... Bluebonnet Plague, Ginger Snap, Julietta Vendetta, and Luna Impact skated with the 'Irish' team, defeating the 'Italian' team in a battle for papal favor. ... Hyper Lynx, GoGo BaiBai, and Haulin' Cass skated with team 'Rice' (skaters of Asian descent) and defeated Dainty Inferno and her 'Beans' team (Latinas). ... Bonnie Thunders teamed with Luna Impact on a team of former artistic figure skaters ('Starlight Express'), narrowly losing to a complilation of former speed skaters. ... Murder City Mandy, Rat-a-Tat Kat, and Steel Magnolia joined team 'MILFs' against Stevie Kicks and the 'Vagitarians.' ... Speed McQueen and Greta Turbo suited up for the victorious 'Suicide Blondes', who prevailed over a team of brunettes, and Speed also teamed with GoGo BaiBai on 'I'd Rather Be Swimming' (competing, of course, against their natural rivals, 'I'd Rather Be Golfing.') ... Stevie Kicks also competed for the 'Rock Stars' team, which may have skated too hard, too fast, and too young in falling to Greta Turbo and Speed McQueen on the 'Movie Stars.' ... Steel Magnolia, Em Dash, and Straight Razor flexed their muscle on the 'Superhero' team, which was, alas, vanquished by a squad of 'Villian' skaters. ... in an all-rookie matchup, Anais Ninja, Bitch Cassidy and Double Clutch skated for 'Babes in Skateland' and emerged victorious over 'Bruisejolais Nouveau,' featuring Rat-A-Tat Kat. ... in a men's derby exhibition, Brooklyn manager T-Stop Tornado and Queens of Pain managers Flying Squirrel and Abe Drinkin' skated in a historical recreation of the Battle of Germantown, as the 'British Invasion' put down the rebellious 'Philly Phounding Phathers.' ... Bonnie Thunders and Suzy Hotrod skated on the 'Flying Sparkly Object Posse,' which defeated an All-Star collection of nationally known skaters failing to live up to their name, 'Team Awesome.' MORE APPEARANCES
... Above: the Gotham Girls and friends from the Suburbia Rollergirls braved the rain to skate as the 'Roller Derby Warriors,' borrowing costume themes from the 'Warriors' film, in June 20th's Coney Island USA Mermaid Parade...
... once again, the Gotham Girls All-Stars appear at the very top of Derby News Network's July 2009 national Derby Power Rankings ... ... Gotham referee Johnny Zebra will be serving as Head Referee of the first-ever European roller derby tournament, Roll Britannia. Fellow Gotham ref Hambone will be joining 'J.Z.' on the track at Earls Court in London, July 18-19 ... MORE DERBY VIDEO EXCITEMENT
