Film Alum Earns Emmy Nod for 'Boardwalk Empire'

Jeffery Stern BFA '75 (Photo/Film) [right] has been nominated for a 2012 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Editing on a TV series for his work on the hit HBO show "Boardwalk Empire." This is his second Emmy nomination. Stern, who teaches motion-picture editing and post-production sound editing at the University of Miami School of Communication, has worked on more than 100 films, including "The Silence of the Lambs," "Goodfellas," "Casino" and "The School of Rock." The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live September 23 on ABC.

Animation Students, Alumna Collaborate at Summer Workshop in Wales  

 

Cook With Dan Animation students Amanda Bautista '14, Shannon Connor '14 and Giselle Rosser '14 and recent alumna Aleson Ho BFA '12 attended the 2012 Summer Animation Workshop held in Wrexham, Wales. The annual workshop is coordinated by University of the Arts Assistant Professor Christopher Magee in collaboration with Claire Fouquet from France's Ecole europeenne superieure de l'image and Dan Berry from host school Glyndwr University. Students from the three schools created an animated short titled "Cook With Dan," which will be submitted to various film festivals.

Faculty Members Awarded Fulbright Grants

  

Maria Rodriguez and Evan Solot Maria Teresa Rodriguez (pictured left), adjunct associate professor in the School of Film, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to the Universidad de la Republica in Montevideo, Uruguay, for the fall 2012 semester. She will work with the community-based media collective Arbol, conduct a short lecture series and serve as a documentary consultant for a national research project on Uruguayan cinema. 


Music Composition Head and alumnus Evan Solot BM '67 (Trumpet), MM '75 (Composition) [right] has received a Fulbright Specialists Program award for a project in Sri Lanka, where he will assist with that country's first international music festival. The Silver Star Alumni Award recipient
will also present workshops and oversee curriculum development and faculty assessment at their new music conservatory.

Olympics Commercials Feature Work by Emmy-Winning Music Grad

Music arranged by Emmy Award-winning composer/ arranger Dan Zank BM '95 (Music Performance) [right] can be heard in a TV commercial by United Airlines that features Olympic athletes on their way to the 2012 Summer Games in London. Zank, a full-time film composer for New York-based production house Yessian, also served as creative director for a second United Olympics spot titled "Getting Ready." His music arrangement for the opening number to the 81st Oscar Awards featuring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway won a 2009 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyric.

Alumni Win 2012 Pew Fellowships in the Arts

Alex Da Corte BFA '04 (Printmaking/Fine Arts), Meg Foley BFA '91 (Modern Dance) and Anthony Smyrski BFA '02 (Graphic Design) have been named 2012 Pew Center for Arts and Heritage fellows. Established by the Pew Charitable Trusts in 1991, the $60,000 Pew Fellowships in the Arts (PFA) are given annually to up to 12 artists of exemplary talent in the five-county Philadelphia area.

University Professor Camille Paglia Talks Hitchcock in London 'Sunday Times Magazine'

Mad About the Girl "Mad About the Girl," an article written by University Professor of Humanities and Media Studies Camille Paglia highlighting legendary director Alfred Hitchcock and his obsession with blondes, appeared in the July 15, 2012, issue of London's Sunday Times Magazine. In addition to the article, Paglia will speak on Saturday, August 18 at "The Genius of Hitchcock: Celebrating Cinema's Master of Suspense," the British Film Institute's five-month long Hitchcock retrospective being held through October in London.

Submissions for 'Making IT' Alumni Exhibit Now Being Accepted

Making IT logo 2012 The University of the Arts is pleased to invite submissions for "Making IT: Alumni Works '02-'12," a juried exhibition of works by recent alumni. Submissions are open to all University of the Arts alumni from the classes of 2002 through 2012, including undergraduate and graduate alumni. Only artwork created after graduation is eligible for submission. "Making IT" will be on display October 2 - 29 in the Hamilton Hall lobby and on the first floor of Solmssen Court, with an opening reception scheduled for Saturday, October 20 from 4 to 6 p.m. The show will coincide with DesignPhiladelphia, the nation's largest city-wide celebration of design being held October 10 - 14, as well as the University's Family and Alumni Weekend, which will take place October 19 - 21.
