UArts, Philadelphia Film Society Launch 'The Artist As A Filmmaker' Series
 
Stranger Than Paradise movie posterThe University of the Arts and the Philadelphia Film Society present "The Artist As A Filmmaker," a monthly film series highlighting world-renowned directors who transitioned their careers from visual artistry to filmmaking. The program, which celebrates the introduction of the University's new School of Film, serves to expand the annual Philadelphia Film Festival's "Masters of Cinema" component, educating its audience on the collaboration of multiple art forms. "The Artist As A Filmmaker" series will debut on April 11 with Jim Jarmusch's film "Stranger Than Paradise," a benchmark in the progression of independent cinema.

Illustration Alumna, Co-Creator of Beloved Berenstain Bears Passes Away at 88
 
Detail of Tree HouseJan Berenstain BFA '45, a University of the Arts Illustration alumna who with her alumnus husband, Stan Berenstain BFA '45 (Illustration), wrote and illustrated the Berenstain Bears books that have charmed preschoolers and their parents for 50 years, has died at the age of 88. She suffered a severe stroke on February 23 and died the next day without regaining consciousness, her son, Mike Berenstain BFA '73 (Illustration), said.

Stan and Jan Berenstain, both Philadelphia natives, were 18 when they met on their first day at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts) in 1941.

2012 ArtUnleashed Fundraising Gala to Showcase UArts Alumni, Faculty and Students
  
Adam Wallacavage BFA '95 (Photography)ArtUnleashed is the University's largest fundraiser, raising money to support the Sam S. McKeel Promising Young Artists Scholarship Fund with an exhibition and sale of artwork in all media from talented students, faculty and alumni. This year's event will feature work by two noted alums who are true American originals: Arnold Roth BFA '50 (Illustration) and Adam Wallacavage BFA '95 (Photography) [pictured in his studio]. The first chance to purchase artwork will be at a preview party on Wednesday, April 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Hamilton Hall (320 South Broad Street). There is an admission charge for this event. The public sale will take place on Thursday, April 12 through Saturday, April 14 from noon to 5 p.m. There is no admission charge for the public sale days.

Illustration Alum Shane O'Neill Named Spike TV's 'Ink Master'


Finale-winning work by Shane O'NeillUniversity of the Arts alumnus Shane O'Neill '94 (Illustration) has been named the winner of Spike TV's "Ink Master" tattoo competition. The 39-year-old defeated nine other elite tattoo artists to win $100,000 and a profile in Inked magazine on the final episode of the show's first season, which aired on March 6. O'Neill is the owner of Infamous Tattoo Co., with locations in Suburban Philadelphia and Delaware.

'In Material' Showcases Work of Crafts Professor

The Arthur Ross Gallery of the University of Pennsylvania presents the work of Mi-Kyoung Lee, associate professor of Crafts and head of Fibers at the University of the Arts, in a new exhibition, "In Material: Fiber 2012." On display through March 25, "In Material" is offered in conjunction with FiberPhiladelphia 2012.

Industrial Design Students, Faculty Present 'Green, Urban, Glocal' Projects
 
Liberty Resources"Green, Urban, Glocal," the Philadelphia Center for Architecture's annual exhibition of student work from Philly architecture and design schools, featured work by students in the undergraduate and graduate Industrial Design programs, as well as faculty research by Michael McAlister, associate professor and ID chair. The projects ranged from engaging residents to help activate the local public park, to design work for Liberty Resources (right), an advocacy group for people with disabilities, to using design to empower people with disabilities to use micro-controllers to improve their everyday lives.

UArts Connect logoThe UArts Alumni Association has launched UArts Connect, an online community exclusively for alumni. Through UArts Connect, alumni can search for classmates, update their alumni profile, post alumni notes and register for a permanent e-mail forwarding address. In addition, the UArts Connect Facebook app allows you to update contact information directly from your Facebook profile.    

 

Register for access to your account by entering your alumni ID number, which you can obtain by contacting Alumni Relations at [email protected]


All alumni who update their profile by April 1 will be entered into a drawing to win an iPad.
