Artist-in-Residence from United Arab Emirates Examines Transformation of Space and TimeMohammed Kazem
"Directions" is a solo exhibition by artist-in-residence Mohammed Kazem, in which the United Arab Emirates native draws inspiration from meticulously precise numbers. Utilizing site coordinates determined by his global positioning system (GPS), Kazem gives precise data on distances, surfaces, heights, and the positions and direction of motion of objects. He fills plastic numbers with soil and stones from various geographic locations and presents an installation in which GPS coordinates and elevation figures are supplemented with the time and date. Kazem believes that nothing is immovable, because time constantly passes and the position of moving objects continuously changes. The artist residency is sponsored by the Emirates Foundation. The show runs August 6 - 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Anderson Hall's Gallery 224. Opening reception: Friday, August 6, 5 - 8 p.m.
