| ...FROM PASTOR BOB... | | |
The SHLC family has a special opportunity on Sunday, January 9th, following worship. Pastor Jim Buckman will lead an hour-long Bible Study to help us learn about and know about some very easy but vital ways that we can live out our faith right here where we live.
Plan to stay an extra hour after worship to hear Pastor Jim teach and talk about prayer walking, houses of prayer, and the "house church" ministry! There will also be free bagels and coffee!!
During worship, Pastor Buckman will give the sermon, part of which will be his mission report to us as one of his supporting partner congregations in his work as New Jersey Urban and Mission Strategist. |
| HOLY COMMUNION PREPARATION CLASS | | |
Following worship on the Sundays of January 23rd, 30th and February 1st, Pastor Bob will lead the Holy Communion Preparation Class. The class spans each of the 3 dates for a total of about 3 hours of teaching and learning and sharing. The class is for all people of the SHLC family - adults and students - as a 1st experience with Holy Communion, or as a refresher course, or as a Bible Study.
Typically, students who are 9 or 10 years old, or in the 4th or 5th grade accompanied by a parent, are permitted to enroll. First Communion may be received at any time following the completion of the class, or may be delayed until their day of Confirmation.
To enroll, please email or call Pastor Bob or Cheryl Delgado in the church office. Advance enrollment is necessary so that books may be ordered. The cost of materials is $5 per individual person participating in the class. There is a separate book for students and for their parent.

| BOOK BEE, ROUND 2! | | |
Want to start the New Year off in a missions-minded way? Would you like to be a participant in the great work that God is doing for the children of Papua New Guinea, through the ministry of Bible translators Pastor John and Maila Davies? Then join us on Sunday, January 16th for an hour or two, as we make Bible story primers for Living Word students of the Haruai tribe.
In order to make this event as great a success as our last Book Bee (October 2006), we will need lots of help! The pages for 9 Bible story book titles are already printed and waiting to be assembled. Our goal is to make 2,000 story books in one afternoon. We've done it before, and we can do it again!! Please come to Fellowship Hall following the Sunday service and join in with the many hands that make light work! Refreshments will be provided.
Look for our upcoming display on the Missions bulletin board and sign up there, or talk with any member of our Missions Team: Joyce Millhagen, Arlene Baccaglini, Melanie Richards and Jodi Kokenge. |
| BERNARDSVILLE HOUSE CHURCH UPDATE | |
| | From Left to Right: Manuel (father), Jessica, Elsa (mother), Jazmin, Gonzalo, Pepe. |
Several months after I started the House Church, I found out about Elsa's situation with her immigration status. In our House Church, we made that a priority prayer request and we ended every service asking for God's guidance and help in this situation. This is a difficult situation for the family and is something that we are still praying for. The Figueroa's continue to praise and trust God in the midst of this situation.
Manuel (father), Elsa (mother) and their younger children, Jazmin and Gonzalo, joined us for worship on December 19th and after worship we went to the Plainfield Mission. The Figueroa's drove with me and that is when I found out the good news. Jazmin was surprised that her mom did not tell me the good news and she begged her mom for her to be the one to tell me. With excitement in her voice and tears in her eyes, Jazmin said that their immigration court date had been postponed for six months. They were so happy and thankful to God because this was an answer to their prayers. I was in awe when I heard the news. I could not believe it. On our way to Plainfield, there were tears of joy and thanksgiving. We were reminded of God's love for us.
Although this situation is not completely over, what happened was definitely God's hand at work. Our God is a God of wonders! Sing the praises of the LORD, you his faithful people; praise his holy name. For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning - Psalm 30:4-5. This news gave the Figueroa's peace and a time to rejoice and reflect on Christ's birth. It also helped strengthen their faith.
As I said before, this situation is not over. The Figueroa's trust God and know that He will make a way. Some of you know of the Figueroa's situation and have been praying about it. I urge you to continue to pray for the Figueroa's.
We are making a difference in one family and this family is making a difference in all those that cross paths with them. They share Christ's love and wonders with others and this is what it is all about.
Our Bernardsville House Church meets every Monday at 8 p.m.

| PLAINFIELD MERCY MISSION | | |
Thank you to all who contributed to the Plainfield mission. More than 20 youth and adults joined together to distribute several hundred items (hats, gloves, socks) to the needy on December 19th. We also sang some Christmas hymns. We felt very blessed by this experience.

| KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE | |
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year! 1/1/11 certainly looks like a new beginning! A New Year is often seen as a fresh start, a new opportunity, maybe as a time for a change, a time for something new. So how about a new diet? With this diet you don't need a scale: "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." Isaiah 16:7 You can eat as much as you want, in fact the more you eat the better! This diet is the Matthew 4:4 JESUS DIET. Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' "
For inner cleansing the Jesus Diet is incomparable: "Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth." John 17:17. It is highly nutritious: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly." Col 3:16. It builds us up and increases our strength, stamina and endurance: "Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Rom 10:17. It protects us and enables us to fight off dangerous and harmful things: "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Eph 6:17. Countless sickness-free and pain-free years are ahead: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." John 6:68. What's more, the Jesus Diet works for everyone!
Just four years ago on 1/1/07, the Kobon people experienced something new. Using Kobon calendars with a scripture portion for each day, they could read the Kobon New Testament from beginning to end in just one year. Three years later, on 1/1/10 the Minimib people were able to use their reading guides
| | New Haruai reader Immanuel, Lukson's son |
to read their Minimib New Testaments through in one year, completing the last verses of Revelation on New Year's Eve 2010. And on 1/1/11 the Haruai people can begin their journey through the Haruai New Testament in a year for the very first time.
Let us know if we can send you a copy of the Daily Reading Guide so you can read along with our Haruai (and Kobon and Minimib) brothers and sisters in 2011. In addition to all the benefits to your own wellbeing of being on the Jesus Diet, you will have the opportunity each day to reflect on how the scripture for the day might be impacting these new Haruai readers and say a prayer for them.
In His Love and Grace,
Pastor John and Maila |

| SMALL GROUP OPPORTUNITIES | | What is a small group?
How easy it is for us to lose closeness with one another in our church family! Would you like to experience a closer Christian friendship? Each of our small group gatherings begin catching up and visiting over snacks, followed by our timely discussions. There is a place for you! We would love for YOU to join us. Monday (2nd & 4th): The group is presently discussing "Heaven" - which leads believers to reclaim a biblical view of heaven and learn to excitedly anticipate the place where they will spend eternity. Info needed? Contact Bill Vreeland at 908-221-1779 or wvreeland1@aol.com.
Tuesday (2nd & 4th): The topic of study is "Lasting Legacy: making a difference with my life". You are where you are today because somebody cared about you. Each chapter is independent so please join us at any time. Info needed? contact Matthew Wessel at 908-625-5756 or weezyl@aol.com.
Becky's Bunch (formerly Sr. High Mom's) Luncheon: Many of the original members of this group have now become empty-nesters, but enjoy our group and have much to share with the moms of high schoolers. So, we are going to be called "Becky's Bunch". All moms of high schoolers and college age students are welcome to be part of this group. We meet once a month for lunch and enjoy fellowship and sharing and food! We would be delighted to have you join us if you "fit the bill". Our next luncheon will be in January. Details to follow. Info? contact Becky Johnsen at becky@shlc.net or 908-892-0946.
Men of SHLC: we would like to welcome ALL Men of SHLC to our Men's group. We get together twice a month to get to know and enjoy each other's company over coffee or a meal, to learn more about God and when there's a need or opportunity, to help with one or another of the different ministries in our church. Our next meeting is to be announced. Info? contact Daniel Fenco at jdfenco@verizon.net or Don Richards at teamrichards@optonline.net. |
