| PLEASE WELCOME THE DAVIES... | | |
... Pastor John and Maila Davies are Lutheran Bible translators to the Kobon, Minimib(Ti) and Haruai language groups in Papua New Guinea. With God's blessing, their work of almost 40 years is coming to fruition as their third New Testament translation is in the hands of the Haruai people. Schools all over Kobon land are serving more than a thousand students, teaching them to read in each mother tongue. And the students' "textbooks" are stories about Jesus in their primers.
What a wonderful mission and ministry! Whenever the Davies visit us they provide glimpses into their lives as missionaries as well as the lives of the people they serve. Over the years, our prayers and financial support have helped them in their work. As we greet them again on October 10th, 11th and 12th we look forward to their update and new opportunities to continue our participation in their mission.
The following opportunities are available to hear about the Davies' mission work in Papua New Guinea:
10/10/10 Worship Service: Pastor John will share slides of their work during the sermon.
10/10/10 following Worship: Pastor John and Maila will be available to answer questions and greet personally in Fellowship Hall. Light refreshments will be served.
10/12/10 @ 10:00 am: Pastor John will be speaking about his work of translating the New Testament into the Kobon, Minimivb(Ti) and Haruai languages. All are invited to attend. |

| Congratulations to Katie Gacos on the completion of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project! | | Katie's project was named "Christian Community Service Project". She started this project in November of 2009 and work diligently and with great commitment, completing it in September of 2010. Katie has a servant heart and demonstrated that as she assisted with the Plainfield Mission in a variety of ways. She helped with the hats/gloves/socks project last December by getting donations, sorting and organizing, and shopping to fill needs. She displayed the items on the Christmas tree in the library and also accompanied us to distribute these items. She recruited other teens to join us and to carol with us in Plainfield. Similarly, she participated in the backpack mission which was completed this past summer. Additionally, Katie helped in the organization and implementation of Vacation Bible School in July. Katie was fully engaged in these activities and continues to serve here at Somerset Hills Lutheran Church. We are so proud of her! Becky was her consultant and mentor throughout this project and is delighted that she had the opportunity to work with Katie. Katie is a positive role model for all of our members, especially our teens. |
| KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE | |
October 2010
Dear Friends,
Part of the training of our six Living Word School Superintendents is how to do monthly reports. In addition to telling us what is going on, the reports enable them to make an assessment of the staff and schools they are responsible for, and an assessment of themselves. How are they doing in their role of supervision and encouragement of the teachers; in helping them with any difficulties; in responding to requests for new schools? Are there new teachers who need a table and chair for the classroom, or a storage box for books and supplies? This is part of our strategy of training them to handle more and more themselves. The goal is that they will feel an ever-increasing responsibility and ownership of their schools, and a growing confidence that they can take on further responsibility and ownership.
They are hardworking and resourceful, but their extreme isolation with virtually no local services means some things are still not possible. Every few months each superintendent does a stock-take of school supplies and text books. This enables us to know what supplies need to be ordered. Due to their isolation they are not yet part of the system whereby school supplies can be ordered from a supplier, charged to an account, and sent by truck and plane, the cost of which can be charged to an account. Ordering and flying in exercise books and pens is complicated enough, but when it comes to text books in three different languages for 1000 students it gets even more complicated. The same goes for galvanized-iron roofing and nails; wheelbarrows and tools for constructing airstrips to reduce isolation; and sponsorship for further training for our most gifted teachers. They still need our help with that.
Timothy completes monthly financial accounts showing a breakdown of what he has paid for salaries, and income from the sale of machetes, saucepans, razor blades etc. Because of their isolation they are not part of the banking system whereby they can withdraw cash to refill the cash box. They still need our help with that. We monitor Timothy's accounts and ask a friend in PNG to withdraw PNG currency from our account and get it to the pilot to bring to Dusin with the school supplies.
The system is complicated and it involves a large team - you, us, the Haruai, Kobon and Minimib. It is the Lord's work not ours. We count ourselves privileged to be part of it. Children and adults are learning to read and write. They are reading their New Testaments. They are finding the way to heaven and eternal life. Thank you for being part of the Team!
In His Love and Grace,
Pastor John and Maila
P.S. We now have three men and two women on staff teaching adult literacy classes. |

| MEET YOUR FELLOW WORSHIPER | | |

Linda Julien
Even if you haven't met Linda, you certainly have seen her. Sundays, she is often "on duty" as a communion assistant.
Linda was born in Teaneck, New Jersey. She grew up in Bergen County and attended Holy Trinity Lutheran School in Garfield. Her summers were spent at a family camp in Harriman State Park, New York, and she is still a member of that camp today. Linda went to Centenary College in Hackettstown, where she received a BS in Business Administration. She also has an AAS in Fashion Merchandising and Marketing from Berkeley College in West Paterson. She has been employed at Resource Realty since 2000 and is their office manager.
In 2007, Linda moved to Basking Ridge. As a newcomer to our area, one of her first priorities was to look for a Lutheran church that was close by. "The first visit to SHLC I felt welcomed and knew this could be my new church home." Before long, it was.
Linda goes on to say, "After I was divorced, I felt I needed something more in my life -- something was missing. I decided that I needed to get back to church. It was the best decision I have made. God has guided me and molded me into the person I am today. God really does answer your prayers!"
In addition to being a communion assistant, Linda also helped organize the SHLC 50th anniversary social last year, which so many of us enjoyed. And just recently, she was appointed to serve as secretary on our church council board.
If you haven't officially met Linda, why not introduce yourself to her the next time that she's off duty.
