| FROM PASTOR BOB KUPPLER... | |
CHANGES ?? OH NO !! "Change" evokes so many emotions in us. It's also true in our life together as God's people in SHLC, and as we begin this new program year 2010 - 2011. One major change is the addition of our regular (4th Sunday...more or less depending upon circumstances, etc.) Contemporary Worship Service. In response to questions and comments about this and other things that seem to be changing, Joyce Millhagen has written an article that appears elsewhere in this month's "News and Notes." Please be sure to read it.
Speaking about reading, take a few moments and go to our website and be blessed by the thoughts expressed by some of our fellow SHLC'ers. Go to http://shlc.net/blog/ I think you'll be glad you did!

| BACKPACKS FOR CLINTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PLAINFIELD, NJ | | | What a great day! On August 19th twenty SHLC members(several of whom were from our Bernardsville House Church) traveled to Plainfield, NJ to distribute backpacks to the students of Clinton Elementary School. The smiles were everywhere; students also picked up books for summer reading fun; parents and students alike were encouraged ... and we prayed with many families right in the parking lot. Our prayer team collected the names and phone numbers of more than 20 families who expressed an interest in further prayer, Bible study and house church ministry in the neighborhood. To God be all the glory! Many thanks to ALL who contributed in every way to this event!

| VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL | |
Thank you to the 35 volunteers who assisted with Vacation Bible School. It was extremely successful and could not have been accomplished without the help of the teens and adults who gave of their time and talents. We had 60 youngsters become "bee-lievers" this year. Also, many thanks for the offerings of monetary gifts and school supplies by the VBS participants. Below are photos from our week.

| BERNARDSVILLE HOUSE CHURCH UPDATE | | | We continued to meet during the summer every Monday and will continue to meet in the fall. We are thankful for our house church and their willingness to help in our back pack distribution at Clinton Elementary School. Below is an article from Melanie Richards after her first visit to our house church. Thank you all for your prayers and support.
Although she spoke very little English, Elsa did her best to welcome me into her home. She looked tired but was smiling. She explained (and Daniel interpreted) that she had worked all day at the dry cleaners, and it was hot there. I remembered the sweat I had worked up just loading my groceries into the car at the Shop Rite parking lot a few hours earlier. Right then my heart went out to Elsa.
We took our places around the living room - Elsa and her husband, Manuel, their daughter Jessica, Daniel and I - and chatted while we waited for the rest of the family. One by one they filtered in. First, Elsa's daughter-in-law, Lily, sat down with her two month old baby, Mia. Then Mia's dad, Pepe, arrived, followed by Elsa's two younger children, Jazmin and Gonzalo. Finally, Pastor Bob arrived.
We sang a few hymns, me doing my best to form the Spanish words and Elsa doing her best to keep up with the English words, and then read from the Bible. As Pastor led the discussion about what we had read, I felt myself being drawn in. Moments ago, the Figueroas had been strangers, faces I would have passed by in the grocery store as I went about the labors of my day. Now they were fully present to me, sharing deep thoughts, hopes and concerns that were not unlike my own - fellow travelers along the journey of faith, brothers and sisters in Christ.
Even young Gonzalo participated in the discussion. I was touched by the sincerity of this middle schooler, Elsa's youngest son. Right then my heart went out to Gonzalo. My heart went out to every member of the family, in fact, as they did their best to make me feel a part of their House Church. This is a hard-working, good-natured family, sincerely seeking to know their Lord Jesus Christ, I thought. I felt so honored to be with them.
Before meeting the Figueroas, my prayers for the House Church were well intentioned. They were prayers for, well, a House Church. But as I sat in Elsa's family room and prayed together with her family at the end of our gathering, I knew that my prayers for them would never be the same. Now I would be praying for Lily, Pepe and Mia, for Jessica, Jazmin and Gonzalo, for Manuel, and for my sister in Christ, Elsa. |
| WHAT ABOUT CHANGE? by Joyce Millhagen | | | Do you sometimes feel like the seasick passenger on the ocean liner who pleaded with the captain: "Mister, Mister, stop the ship. I want to get off and walk."? I know the feeling, and perhaps you've had it, too. The older I get, the more I begin to feel like a misfit. It's really all about change, isn't it?
Do you sometimes miss being unable to enjoy a Sunday service because the order or music is unfamiliar? We like to think that change may be inevitable in the world about us, but not here at church.
Let's remember, though, that the real purpose of our worship (worth+ship) is not to "enjoy" it, but to let God know how much He's "worth" to us. So it's really not about pleasing ourselves, but Him. And how do we do that? I believe it's when all of us, different as we are as individuals, come together as God's family (the Church) to praise and honor Him - with One Voice. Psalm 100 says it this way: "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before His presence with singing."
And by the way, when you're looking for stability in your life remember that we have that in our changeless God Himself. For "Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8) |

| SAYING GOODBYE | | Pastor Bob:
Sorry it's taken me 2 weeks to say goodbye via email...
When Ginny and I learned of this opportunity in North Carolina, one of the first things we thought was, "what about church, we love our church?" We have loved the people of this church from the moment we attended. It was striking to us Pastor Bob how Spirit-filled and enthusiastic you spoke as though it was your first service. You blessed our children during communion with sincerity truly calling upon God's blessings for them reminding them of God's love. Rarely did we leave Sunday service not being challenged by your message on the fundamental and unchanging truths of God's Word. You admonished us weekly inspiring us not to be conformed to the pattern of the world but to be transformed by Christ. We needed to hear that message. Of course, you, your family, and the whole church have been absolutely wonderful. From church functions to visits at home with other church members, we can truly say that we enjoyed every minute. We can say without exaggeration that we have not had one negative experience at church. Encourage the church for us letting them know what a tremendous impact they had on us, asking them to do the same for others who will come after us. We will miss immensely each and every brother and sister in Christ at SHLC, including you Pastor Bob. Somerset Hills Lutheran Church was truly home for us.
We hope to see you soon. God be with you and prosper his church at SHLC.
With affection,
The Bastante Family |
| KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE | |
Dear Friends:
At the start of the school year we may feel both excited and apprehensive - excited about progressing to a further year at school and, well, frankly, a little apprehensive about progressing to a further year. This is especially so where there is a transition from one school to another.
Of course these feelings are not limited to the student. Parents are also subject to mixed feelings of excitement and apprehension. These dual feelings are frequently present when the transition is from high school to college - often a time of excitement and apprehension for both the student and parent. Taking time to talk and pray within the family can be a big help in easing apprehension and fostering a confident start to a happy and successful year.
Thank you for your prayers for our Living Word schools, teachers, and students in Papua New Guinea. The Lord is answering your prayers. Boys and girls, and now, through the adult literacy classes, men and women, are learning to read and write. At the same time, they are learning about the Lord Jesus Christ and the road to heaven and eternal life. It doesn't get any happier or more successful than that!
A happy and successful school year to all students, and their families, and their teachers!
In His Love and Grace,
John and Maila Davies |

| MEET YOUR FELLOW WORSHIPER | |
One of our oldest members, though NOT in age, is Carrie Ruffner.
Carrie was born on September 7, 1978 in Summit, New Jersey, and is the daughter of Judy and Bill Vreeland. She began coming to SHLC when she was little and has continued ever since.
Carrie graduated with honors from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, with a degree in Hospitality Management. She met her husband, Ed Ruffner, at TJMaxx in Gillette, New Jersey. "We both were working together. We got to know each other and realized we had a lot in common."
After Carrie married Ed, they lived in Bernardsville, Bridgewater and with the Vreelands for a year in Basking Ridge. Now they are living in Gillette. "Our neighbors are the Meyersville Inn and Casa Maya." Needless to say, they are never without food.
Carrie enjoys scrap booking and photography. She is rarely without her camera. She also loves going to the beach and camping. Spending time with family and friends is important -- so important that she changed her career from Hospitality Management to teaching. She works at the Roseland Child Development Center which does not require being on duty nights, weekends and holidays which, to Carrie, are family time. Carrie hopes to go back to school and get a teaching degree so that she can teach Kindergarten or first grade in a Christian school.
Faith is very important to Carrie. "God has always helped me through the hard times. When Ed was going through cancer treatment, that was all I could hold on to. God was my anchor. Ever since I was a little child, I believed. As I grew up and life had its challenges, my faith did too. When I was five years old I prayed that God would send me a man of God. And he did."
You can find Carrie in church on Sundays, either sitting with Judy and Bill, or upstairs when Ed runs the projector. The next time that you see her, give her a big CONGRATULATIONS! Carrie and Ed will be the proud parents of twins come March!

| PLI THANK YOU | | | Dear Members of Somerset Hills Lutheran Church,
My husband and I just returned from the April PLI conference - another amazing, uplifting experience! How wonderfully refreshing it has been to be strengthened and encouraged through Word and Sacrament! And we feel so loved, cared for, and nurtured through special treats such as the lovely hotel, delicious meals, and thoughtful gifts. Most importantly, PLI has challenged and encouraged us in our ministry so that we will be more effective and intentional at connecting people to Jesus. We feel incredibly blessed, excited, and humbled to be a part of this "movement" for the edification of God's kingdom. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your part in making this possible.
To God be all glory and praise!
