| FROM PASTOR BOB KUPPLER... | |
Worship As you know, we have designated the "4th Sunday" for our contemporary worship service. Our plan is to consider whether or not to have 2 different Sunday morning services, possibly as early as this fall - one traditional in format, the other contemporary. In order to assess if we have enough "resource people" to staff a 2nd service, we've scheduled an additional contemporary service in July.
We recognize that there are folks who prefer one service over another; so we appreciate your flexibility while we continue to experiment and assess our abilities as we seek to go forward in our worship. Our flexibility is a wonderful asset and gift that we give to one another, especially considering something as personally meaningful as our corporate worship. Our long-term goal is to provide a greater variety as well as offer a worship service that will be meaningful to those new or unfamiliar with traditional Christian worship liturgy.
Your help and patience, along with helpful input, is valued as we strive to be a congregation that is open to the goals and challenges of making disciples for Christ in our very pluralistic and post-modern/post-church era. Thank you! SHLC is a wonderful congregation of people, whom, I believe, our Lord desires to use in mighty ways to make a difference in the lives of many people near and far.
Backpack Sunday Along with NJ District Urban Mission Strategist Pastor Jim Buckman preaching on July 25th, SHLC will be assembling as many of the 310 backpacks and supplies that we are able following worship. The worship and the servant event following will both be celebrations of God's grace and our response. Many hands will make the challenge easy...and enjoyable. Be sure to be at worship on the 25th, and set aside some time afterward for this time to prepare for our outreach. At this writing, we are planning to distribute the backpacks at Clinton Avenue Elementary School, Plainfield, NJ on August 19th. Pastors Buckman and Kuppler will be preparing a number of SHLC'ers for special prayer time at the backpack distribution event, with the goal of inviting school parents and children to prayer ministry/house church ministry in Plainfield, to be led by Vicar Dan Fenco.
Music Ministry At this writing, August 1st is the scheduled "last Sunday" for Joy Elowsky as our Music Director. As the date comes closer, you will receive more information as to events of the day as we bid the Elowsky's farewell and Godspeed.
Beginning the week of July 4th, we will begin interviewing and auditioning candidates for our Music Director position. Please continue to keep this in your prayers.

| "GIVE A KID A BACKPACK" MISSION FOR PLAINFIELD YOUTH | | |

It is a team effort!
Somerset Hills Lutheran Church, Gentle Shepherd Christian Preschool, and SHLC Vacation Bible School are teaming up to provide backpacks and supplies to every one of the 310 students at the Clinton Elementary School in Plainfield, NJ. We have provided backpacks to the general public in Plainfield in the past but have now committed to supplying an entire school in August! Please join in this Backpack Project by providing the following:
One backpack supplied with pencils, pens, a ruler, a pair of scissors, glue or glue sticks, crayons and markers
OR perhaps you would prefer to make a monetary donation of $30..
Speak to Becky if you have any questions.
To date we have collected almost 40 backpacks and more than $500 toward our efforts. Let's keep up the good work!
Help a needy child get off to a great 2010-2011 school year! There will be a box in the hallway where you can deposit your backpacks.
BACKPACK SUNDAY is July 25th.

| PLAINFIELD HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP | |

Irvin Torres
On June 13th we were pleased to offer our third SHLC Plainfield High School Scholarship. Initiated by a donation from an SHLC family, the scholarship is being awarded to Irvin Torres. Plainfield High School suggested 7 candidates who were interviewed by several members of SHLC. Irvin was selected because of his servant heart, his work ethic, and his future goals. An excellent student, Irvin has been very involved with community and church activities, most notable as a volunteer for Little League Baseball, and faith related activities. This summer he will be attending a Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp where he hopes to grow athletically and spiritually. He has been described by his teachers as "a hard worker, responsible and serious",, and as one who is "dedicated and highly committed to his education." One advisor wrote, "He is a huddle leader for our school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has assisted many students in learning about Christ's involvement in their life." All of the recommendations we received agreed that we would not be able to find a more deserving candidate for our scholarship than Irvin. We agree! He will be attending The College of New Jersey where he will pursue studies in Health and Exercise Science with the goal of becoming an Athletic Trainer.
For a number of years, people of Plainfield, NJ have been recipients of some of our caring ministries. This year our "Backpack Summer!" hopes to provide 310 filled backpacks to every student of Clinton Elementary School. Every December, our members contribute to the hat/gloves/socks project. Additionally, we have supported the Bike Rodeo sponsored by the Plainfield Police Dept., and have been involved in career day at Emerson Elementary School. Finally, during the past year we have also provided funding for a science field trip for Emerson Elementary School and funding for the "Forgiveness Project" at Clinton Elementary School.

| KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE | |
Graduates from the Living Word
schools teacher training course at
Dusin 2009.
Dear Friends:
The checkout girl at the grocery store had a big smile this week - "I graduate on Friday!" Graduations are times of celebration. The graduate is joined by family and friends to celebrate accomplishment, completion, the successful end of a journey. Whether that journey has been through grade school, middle school, high school, college, or professional training, graduation is the rite of passage marking the transition to the next stage of life's journey.
When students graduate from our Living Word schools in PNG, their parents and friends celebrate with the party. After three years of Christian education in our schools the boys and girls can read and write and many are followers of the Lord Jesus. That's something to celebrate! Through the schools a generation is being reached for Jesus.
Sometimes the graduating students are the first members of the local community who can read and write. Since we were able to start from scratch when we designed the alphabet for these languages, we made them very simple, phonetic alphabets. That way children and adults quickly learn to read and spell correctly.
Many graduates want to go on to take our training to teach in our Living Word schools. As they graduate as teachers and pass on the skills of reading and writing and their Christian faith to new students, future generations will also be reached for Jesus. And as people trust in our Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, they are prepared for the most important graduation of their lives, graduation to heaven and eternal life. In every case this is a graduation with honours - honours not earned or deserved but freely given by "his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves." - Ephesians 1:6
Ready for graduation?
In His Love and Grace,
Pastor John and Maila |
| PRAYER MINISTRY | | Isaiah 65:24 tells us that "Before they call, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will hear."
In June there were 5 people who attended the Prayer Group. We also looked into the "Power of Prayer."
The Prayer group will resume on Tuesday, September 14th @ 10 am.
Just a reminder that there are "Prayer Request" cards in the pew in front of you in case you have a prayer request you would like us to pray for. Just drop the card in the box on the credenza in the hallway.
-------------------------
What follows below is a excerpt from a note received by Melanie Richards:
... All I can do is simply give God the glory - for it is truly by this grace that I can stand & walk, etc. I start physical therapy next week and I'm excited to start...
.... Please thank your prayer ministry members as well. For it is by their faith and prayers that things change.
God Bless -
Sheila |
