"NEWS AND NOTES"
OF
Somerset Hills Lutheran Church

May 2010
FROM PASTOR BOB KUPPLER...
It's still the time of Easter.  "Alleluias" and shouts of "Christ is risen!" are still in the air; they ring in our ears and come from our voices.  In fact, every Sunday is Easter Sunday, because Sunday is the day Jesus rose from death, defeating sin, death and the devil.  It's over; finished; done.  Faith in the Risen Christ brings these daily and eternal gifts to you.

Worship, service and caring are among the responses to God's grace. May they be among yours, as well.

Along with "alleluias" in the air (and in our hearts!), we also notice the joys of spring including beautiful weather, flowers, green...green...green grass and leaves. And Mother's Day is just around the corner - May 9th!

In April there were six people sho attended the Prayer Group.  We looked into the "Purpose of Prayer."

The Prayer group will meet on May 11th and will study the "Privilege of Prayer."  We meet at 10:00 am for about an hour.  Please plan to join us!

Just a reminder that there are "Prayer Request" cards in the pew in front of you in case you have a prayer request you would like us to pray for.

KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE

May 2010

Dear Friends:

I am writing just over twelve hours after arriving back from Lukson's home village of Fankfank, where we spent five wonderful days with Lukson, his wife Rosalie, their children, and Haruai people from all over the Haruai area.  We actually arrived in Fankfank two days earlier than we had planned.  The plane was to have brought Maila and me and the New Testaments into Singapi on the Kobon/Haruai border on Friday April 16.  I would then have walked a whole day to Fankfank while Maila returned to Ukarumpa on that plane.  On Monday April 19 I would have walked back to Singapi.

As soon as we arrived at Ukarumpa April 9, there was a letter waiting signed by all our Living Word district superintendents saying I must not attempt to walk that trail because I would not make it.  There had been constant rain which had caused many landslides and crevasses along the 15 mile trail.  I heeded the warning and immediately started to make inquiries about the only other possibility - helicopter.

There was a helicopter passing within a few miles of Fankfank on Wednesday April 14 and there was another helicopter I could hire to bring me out of Fankfank on April 19!  This meant that Maila and I could both go and spend not just two days but five days with the Haruai people!

Tuesday April 13 it rained.  Wednesday April 14 was a lovely day.  During the night it rained again.  Thursday was again a beautiful day and so on in the same pattern right through Sunday!  Doesn't the Lord just amaze us!

Thank you for praying for that weekend of 16-18 April.  Again the Lord answered your prayers completely beyond what we imagined possible.  More later, but for now a couple of pictures which I believe will speak a thousand words.

In His Love and Grace,

Pastor John and Maila

MEET YOUR FELLOW WORSHIPER
 Mike Delgado

Mike Delgado

Mike is no stranger to our SHLC family. He is married to our church administrator, Cheryl, and often gives us our bulletins on Sunday mornings.

Although he was born in Morristown, Mike has been a lifetime resident of Basking Ridge. He was raised Methodist but, thanks to Cheryl, became a Lutheran. We have been fortunate to have him here at SHLC, where he has been a trustee, usher, and communion assistant.

Mike is a foreman at H.W. Alward, a construction firm in Bernardsville. He met Cheryl through volunteer work with the Basking Ridge Fire Company and Liberty Corner First Aid Squad. They were married at SHLC in June 1985, by Pastor Keyl. They have two daughters, Denise, 19, and Danielle, 22.

What you may not know about Mike is that is plays the accordion for fun. Recently, he restored a 1968 Mercury Cougar which he drives to church on nice days.  And, like many of our members, Mike is a die hard Yankees fan.

So the next time you gather around the coffee table after church, check with Mike on the latest team standings. And, if it's a nice day, check out that Cougar in the parking lot.
