"NEWS AND NOTES"
OF Somerset Hills Lutheran Church
February 2010 |
| FROM PASTOR BOB KUPPLER... |
|
Here's a list of some remarkable things...all from the hand of God:
- Mr. Brad Hildebrandt, who for years has preached and assisted in worship as well as serve the Lord at SHLC in so many ways, has heard and responded to God's call, and will begin work this Fall that will lead to ordination as pastor in Christ's Church.
- Daniel Fenco, also working towards pastoral ministry, has begun SHLC's first "house church" in Bernardsville (see story, below)
- SHLC now has a new Youth Ministry Team: Faith Martin (our new contemporary Worship Leader) and Jason Marks. They're already planning for the National Lutheran Youth Gathering this summer, as well as beginning to work with our Middle School Youth.
- Beginning Sunday, Feb 28th, the 4th Sunday of every month, our worhsip will be in a more contemporary style, lead by Faith Martin and the Praise Band.
- Beginning Sunday, Feb 7th, lead by Music Director Joy Elowsky and with the help of the Chancel Choir, we will be learning a new liturgy for Sunday morning traditional worship. In the "Blue hymnal" it is Divine Service Two, the First Setting.
Also, please decide to set aside the time to be part of our mid-week Lent worship service, beginning Feb 17th at 7 pm.

| A DREAM BECOMES REALITY - an excerpt from Pastor Buckman's newsletter |
|
| "Start new worshipping communities through local LCMS congregations under the supervision of ordained pastors in ways which are both cost effective and develop lay people for greater leadership."
Pastor Bob Kuppler, Somerset Hills Lutheran Church of Basking Ridge, NJ has had a dream for many years. It all began with a mission trip he took to Peru where he fell in love with the people of Peru. When he returned to his hometown, God had opened his eyes to see a vision for reaching the immigrants surrounding him; many of whom were Peruvian. God brought Daniel Fenco, a Peruvian immigrant to Pastor Kuppler's church and Pastor Kuppler intentionally reached out to the Peruvians around him. Recently he was asked to do a wedding for a Peruvian couple and following up with this we were invited to come to their home and discuss starting a Peruvian House Church. On the night of Sunday, January 24th this dream became reality. Many of those there have not been baptized or ever even taken communion. Pray for God's continued revelation to Pastor Kuppler and Daniel Fenco.

| PRAYER MINISTRY |
|
In Matthew 18:19 Jesus gives us the promise that "If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in Heaven".
This is just one of the many promises that we claim about prayer! The Prayer Network has been in operation for three months and is being used!!! There is always space for additional "Pray ers" if you would like to join. Just call the office or Betty Vetter, 973-887-6027 and your name can be added to one of the networks.
The Prayer Group will meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month. It will start on February 9, 2010 at 10:00 am for about one hour. There will be a short Bible study on prayer and then we will pray for any requests that have been called in or those requests that have been placed in the "Prayer Request Box" (on the table by the flower chart). Please feel free to drop in and pray with the group even if you have just 10 - 15 minutes to spare. We will meet in the room by the water fountain.
Also, did you know that there is an Elder at the front of the Church after service who will pray with you if you so desire? Often, it is Joyce Millhagen! Please feel free to take advantage of this special time of prayer!
Are you one of those who wants to be a part of the Prayer Ministry at SHLC? We would be happy to have your help! |
| GOT AN EXTRA BLANKET? |
|
We are collecting gently used blankets, hats or gloves for the 600-800 homeless in Plainfield. They will be handed out on Wednesdays as part of a soup kitchen. Please place your items in the box by the preschool sign in table. Your donations are greatly appreciated!! |
| PA-RUM-PUM-PUM-PUM! NEW DRUMS! |
|
|
We are upgrading the contemporary worship experience with the addition of an electronic drum set. Electronic drums have the sound of acoustic drums while allowing us to better blend the sound with the band and for recordings. The Praise Team's ministry is to bring a joyful song to the Lord, who is the source of all our praise, and to His people and those who have yet to hear the Good News. With this drumset and other enhancements, we can improve the quality of music offered for praise - not for ourselves, but so that the Lord's message is conveyed most effectively. One SHLC family has committed a matching gift of $2,500 toward the purchase of the new equipment, which is halfway to our goal of $5,000. Make your check payable to SHLC noted "drums".

| KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE |
|
Dear Friends,
The goal of our ongoing training of our school superintendents is that they will take responsibility for running the schools, including taking decisions and action well ahead. Over the past couple years we have increasingly emphasized the authority and responsibility of the superintendents as a team. The board consists of the five superintendents - Timothy, Hibru, Lukson, Lindon, Joel, and the school governor Philip. They meet each month and they set the agenda together, and are jointly responsible for all planning and decisions.
So it was very encouraging to receive Timothy's report of the October 2009 Board Meeting a couple weeks ago. (There can be a long delay between reports being written and us receiving them.) Under the section where he reports on board meeting business and decisions, Timothy writes "teacher postings, adult literacy classes, local school board workshop dates, teachers who are having difficulties and not teaching."
It was good to see that the question of assigning teachers for the 2010 school year was addressed well ahead of the start of the school year on February 1. Teachers who will be teaching for the first time have had time to get themselves located in the community where they will be teaching and work on student enrollment. Their local superintendent will have been following up and helping the teacher make these preparations.
We are interested to know more such as which teacher is assigned to which school and how the new schools are going. We won't know that until we return to PNG on March 19 but meantime we are very happy to know that it is taking place - without us knowing or needing to know the details because across the other side of the world the local team of Haruai, Kobon and Minimib are working together and taking responsibility for those things.
In His Love and Grace,
Pastor John and Maila |
| MEET YOUR FELLOW WORSHIPER |
|
Norman Davis
I first met Norm Davis at a Trinity Lutheran social. It was a wine tasting and Norm was in charge of it. Norm had been making his own vintage and knew a lot
Norm and Kitty with three about wine. He
of their grandchildren uncorked, we sampled, and we learned.
I don't know if Norm is still a wine enthusiast, but I'm sure you'd like to learn a few other things about him.
Norm and his wife Kitty are fairly new to SHLC. Like many other newer members from Trinity Lutheran, they are on I-287 every Sunday morning traveling to Basking Ridge. When then get here, they usually go to the front pew where they sit with their grandchildren.
Norm was born in Minersville, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Weequahic High School and attended Rutgers at night for seven years. He later became a credit manager, specializing in international credit. In 1994 Norm retired from Amerace Corporation in Hackettstown.
Norm met Kitty when he was 11 at Zion Lutheran Church in Newark. They were married in June, 1957. They have two adult children and four grandchildren. Norm and Kitty live in Parsippany.
Norm served the US army for two years and was stationed in Bamberg, Germany. He was an assistant to the chaplain who was the son of the Missouri Synod president, Oliver Harms. Norm was his secretary, driver and organist. While stationed in Germany, Kitty accompanied him and they were able to visit Europe.
At Trinity Lutheran, Norm was Council Vice President and Treasurer, Chairman of the Board of Finance, Finance secretary, and a collections counter.
His hobbies include playing the piano and organ.
Norm sums up his faith by saying, "Without God in my life, life would be meaningless!"
Say hello to Norm and Kitty Davis the next time you see them in church. And if you want some advice on wine, see what Norm has to say.
