FROM PASTOR BOB KUPPLER...
buckman, bartsch and ndemSunday, November 22nd was "Mission Sunday" at SHLC, with our special guest Pastor James Buckman, recently sent to be the "Urban and Immigrant Mission Strategist" for New Jersey.   At 8:30 am, an hour before the service, the power went out; a local transformer blew out, as well as causing problems at our nearby sub-station.
Pastor Jim Buckman talking   The result?  We worshipped in the dark!  Thank God for pianos,
with Ginny Bartsch and            flexible musicians and worshippers!  Though we were physically in
Christ Ndem after                   the dark, the LIGHT of Jesus Christ was evident for all to see,
Worship at SHLC.                  hear, and be encouraged by.  The LIGHT was shining in darkness.
How fitting it is that as we begin the time of Advent and Christmas - the coming of the Light into the world - the light no darkness can subdue, the Holy Spirit filled our sanctuary and people's hearts with joy and enthusiasm.  May you approach the birth of Jesus with the same joy.  He is the light of the world!

WELCOME FAITH MARTIN
We praise and thank God for bringing to SHLC Faith Martin, to be our Contemporary Worship Leader and Youth Engager.  Faith comes to us from Columbia City, Indiana, where she grew up attending Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Concordia Lutheran Church and High School, Fort Wayne, IN.  A May 2009 graduate of Millikin University, Decatur, IL, Faith earned the Bachelor of Music in Commercial Music. Her special educational highlight was researching the subgenres and history of Contemporary Christian worship, while writing, recording, producing and mixing 9 intergenerational Contemporary Christian songs.   Faith also served with the worship team of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Decatur and was very active leader in the campus Intervarsity Christian Fellowship.  She will be making her home in Stirling, and begins her full-time ministry among us on November 30th.
INSTALLATION SERVICE - DECEMBER 20TH
  joy elowsky                   faith martin
    Joy Elowsky                           Faith Martin

How blessed we are to be able to welcome and install TWO new SHLC staff members during the worship service on December 20th .  Be sure to be here as we install Joy Elowsky - our new Director (began at SHLC this past summer), and Faith Martin - our new Contemporary Worship Leader and Youth Engager.
A NEW MINISTRY...AND MINISTER!

 WEDDING #1           WEDDING #2
God is truly at work here in SHLC!  The latest and newest work of his hand is Daniel Fenco.  Worshipping with us since 2004, along with his wife Jerusha and little Sophia Marabel, the Fenco's have been a blessing from the Lord to us.  We are now blessed to be able to share that Daniel has felt the Lord calling him to greater ministry, and with the help of Pastor Buckman (see opening article of this issue of "News 'n Notes") intends to enroll in the EIIT - Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology - of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, resulting in ordination into the pastoral ministry.  Prior to admission, Daniel will be working to help us begin "house churches" in the various communities in which SHLC'ers live.  The first house church, we pray, will be in Bernardsville, where on November 14th Daniel and Pastor Sparling presided at the wedding of Jose and Lily Figueroa, in the home we hope to begin our 1st house church.  Watch this space for further information about our "house church" ministry, as well as Daniel's progress toward the EIIT.  Also join us as we praise God for the work of His hand, as well as our - and the Fenco's - response to His calling!

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS FOR THE SANCTUARY
This year, all Christmas decorating donations will go into one special Christmas donation fund that the Altar Guild will use to decorate our church during the Christmas season.  Therefore, if you wish to contribute to these decorations, please fill out the following form and turn it in either to your Sunday usher or to the church office.  All checks should be made out to the ALTAR GUILD.  A listing of the contributions will be published.

SHLC PRAYER MINISTRY
Prayer handsJames 14:14 says:

"If you ask anything in my name, I will do it."  With this great promise in mind, we have started a Prayer Ministry at SHLC.  There are three different ways to be involved in this ministry:

Prayer Network:  those who sign up for this will be divided into groups.  Each group will have a leader.  When a prayer request is received by the church office it will be passed on to Betty Vetter.  She will then call each of the leaders and give them the prayer request.  Then they will say an appropriate prayer to themselves and then call the next person on the list, etc.  In a short time many prayers are being offered for the request.  Prayer requests can also be given to Betty Vetter.  The same procedure will happen.  Pastor Bob will be informed of all prayer requests regardless if they are received by the office or by Betty.

Prayer Groups:  those who can will come to SHLC to meet for approximately one hour to pray for any requests and also for any personal prayers of the group.  There would be some Bible study on prayer for a few minutes.  The day, time and frequency is to be determined.  Hopefully, we'll be able to have two groups - one day time and one evening.

Individual prayer - these people would receive the prayer requests and then pray at home.  There would be no calls or meetings.

How To Have A Prayer Said for me or someone else:

If you are interested in having a prayer said on your behalf or for someone else, complete a Prayer Request Card which may be found in the pews, and drop it in the Prayer Request Box on the credenza by the flower chart.  Of course, all prayer requests would be held in confidence.

We are still in the infancy of our Prayer Ministry and would be open to any suggestions.  We pray you are excited about this new ministry and that you'll sign-up for the area(s) which interest you!

For further info or to sign up via the phone, please call Betty Vetter (973-887-6027) or Russ Baccaglini (973-539-7930).

GENTLE SHEPHERD CHRISTIAN PRESCHOOL

gscp logo

Gentle Shepherd Christian Preschool held its annual fundraiser on Sunday, November 15th. It was a beautiful day that proved to be a huge success!  The venue changed for the first time in 5 years.  The committee chose to host an afternoon Tea Luncheon instead of a Ladies Night Out Dinner.  It was wonderful to entertain 96 women in the halls of Gentle Shepherd and SHLC. The food was delicious, 51 gift baskets were available, and vendors were offering gift ideas with toys, beauty products, jewelry, household items and more.  It was a great day to visit with each other, get some Christmas shopping done and raise funds for future capital expense items to improve the school.  Thank you one and all for your support of attending the luncheon or buying gift basket chances.  We were so happy that the Davis, Hoops, Sabella and Wald families had an opportunity to go home with a gift basket! We are so grateful to all of you for supporting Gentle Shepherd's families and making it be the best preschool around!  Thank you!

KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE
John and LuksonDear Friends,

December 6 is our 37th anniversary in Kobon Ministry. Looking back on these years we are under no illusion that the ministry of the Gospel to the Kobon, Minimib and Haruai people has taken place because we planned it. These people have received the good news entirely as a result of the Lord's plan.

We have seen this to be true again this past year. We knew it was going to be impossible to complete the Haruai New Testament in 2009, so we planned to do as much as possible this year and complete it and typeset in 2010. But the Lord used a number of circumstances to bring about what we had thought impossible.

1. He got us to PNG earlier than we had planned. If we had gone on the planned date in April, we would have needed to apply for new visas to PNG since our visas expired at the end of February. This would have been a lengthy process and we may not have got new visas. But by going while the present visas were still valid, admission to the country and extension of the visas was automatic.

2. Lukson had put his struggles behind him and was determined to do all he could to complete the New Testament for his people.

3. A typesetting slot mid-2009 was vacated by someone who had to postpone and we took it.

4. None of us lost a single day through sickness.

5. We had sufficient of Maila's medication with us to be able to extend the time we had planned to stay in PNG by over two months.

It was an extremely busy time, but five days before we left PNG we received confirmation that the Haruai New Testament manuscript had reached Korea by email and they were starting to prepare it for printing. In a few months time the printing should be completed and the New Testaments should be shipped from Korea to PNG - thanks to Him whose ways are perfect and for whom nothing is impossible.

In His Love and Grace,

Pastor John and Maila
COMPASSION EVANGELICAL HOSPITAL

CEH

Dear Friends and Prayer Partners,

We praise God for continued blessings on His work at CEH. Our prayers are with each of you for a blessed Thanksgiving in your households.

Despite political turmoil in the nation, the hospital continues to remain open daily and construction on the inpatient ward is nearing completion. For updates on the political news concerning Guinea I suggest that you occasionally read Guinea News (http://www.topix.com/world/guinea). Elections are scheduled for late January and until that time most analysts predict that there will be significant turmoil. Some travelers warnings have been posted by the US and France. The UN, France, US and the African Union have all been trying to
intervene. We at CEH try to remain non political and continue to serve all those who come in Christ's name.  We pray for peace.

We are seeing 70 patients daily and all are hearing the gospel proclaimed and seeing it lived out before them by the compassionate and competent care of the medical staff. With four doctors on staff and four lab technicians we can see 90 patients daily. Rarely do we send patients away asking them to return the next day. Lord willing, we will open the inpatient ward in November and be able to care for those who are more seriously ill over several days. Pray for six more Christian nurses to staff the inpatient ward. The local population and the government are eager to have us add these services. Currently those needing hospitalization are evacuated to the government hospital in Mamou, about eight miles away. The infrastructure needs one more generator with an estimated cost of $20,000. Additional funds totalling $20,000 are needed ASAP to ship the container holding the generator, Caterpillar (purchased earlier this year) and pay the taxes. Some White Cross materials and medical supplies will also be included in this shipment. Pray for this funding and consider what God might
want you to contribute. Our next major building project (in 2010) will be the surgery with an anticipated cost of $82,000. The government hospital is currently the only local surgery facility.
The humanitarian organization mentioned in a previous update which offered several vehicles and portions of a mobile hospital has placed their assistance on hold due to the political instability and current human rights issues in Guinea. This delays those services which we hoped to begin this winter. I believe it is all the more important we continue to serve the people well, letting our light shine brightly in the darkness of these times.

Beth Beacom, our Nurse Practitioner from Mayo and ARC, who is scheduled for a six month assignment to CEH, has postponed her trip until after the elections in January on the advice of her church, with which we concur. Pray for her as she continues to prepare for the trip. Pray also for the Macrises as they continue support discovery, French language learning and sort out their path with the Lord.

I, our eight MIAPE missionaries and our national staff are doing well and feel secure, but we need to seek the Lord's face together. Pray for us as we make decisions concerning the inpatient services, contingency plans if the missionaries have to evacuate and many other plans if all continues to be stable. We always want to preserve
the unity which the Lord gives us, so that the world around us will see this to God's glory.

We have placed an order with IDA in Europe for the next six months supply of medications for CEH services.  One Christian foundation has helped with much of this cost and many of you have given, as well. Thank you all so much.

Your fellow servant in Christ,

Kristen Schmaltz

MEET A FELLOW WORSHIPER
marks
Sue Marks joined SHLC in December 2008, but to many she doesn't seem like a newcomer. We've seen her up front giving the children's message. And she is no stranger to Lois Kuppler, who was her college roommate for four years at Concordia College in Bronxville, New York.

Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Sue lived in Ohio, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire before her family moved to New Jersey. She graduated from Nashua High School in New Hampshire and went on to receive a BA degree in Education and English from Concordia. In addition to becoming friends with Lois, she sang in the Concordia Tour Choir and the Festival Choir for four years.

One of her interesting childhood memories occurred during the summer before she turned sixteen when she went across country with her mom, dad, two brothers and sister.  "We borrowed a pop-up camper from my aunt, put it on the back of the station wagon and drove from New Hampshire to Washington, down the West Coast, across Arizona and New Mexico and back.  We had a great time and saw the wonders of God's creation throughout this incredible country".

Sue has lived in Fanwood for the last 32 years. She has two grown children, Jason and Heather, and a two year old granddaughter, Lynda - all of whom we have seen in church. Born and raised Lutheran, Sue has been a Lutheran School teacher for almost half of her life. "I have had the pleasure of teaching children and sharing with them my faith in Jesus as my Savior. That is why I enjoy doing the children's lessons during the worship services.  I also enjoy praying and praising God through singing. The Lord has been, and continues to be, with me every day in times of joy and times of pain and sorrow. I look to Him to love and forgive me, guide and direct me.  I thank and praise Him for the many blessings He bestows on me.  Somerset Hills Lutheran Church and God's people here are among those blessings".

Sue can be found sitting next to Lois and Emily Kuppler on Sunday mornings. She is currently a substitute teacher, but is hoping to find a full time position. We wish her well. You can see that she is truly gifted at reaching the SHLC children, as well as the kids of all ages sitting in the pews.

 The Repertory Dancers Presents
                     The Nutcracker Act II

The Repertory Dancers(including SHLC's Samantha Hellings) will perform the second act of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker on December 5th at Voorhees High School in Glen Gardner and on December 13th at Ridge Performing Arts Center at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, NJ. The Basking Ridge performances will be held at 1pm and 4pm on December 13th at 268 S Finley Ave, Basking Ridge NJ. The Glen Gardner performances on December 5th will be at 11am and 2pm at Voorhees High School, 256 County Road 513, Glen Gardner, NJ. The 11am performance will benefit the Doran Family who lost both of their parents to cancer.

The second act, Clara's visit to the Kingdom of Sweets, offers attendees a family-friendly glimpse into Clara's magical
world. The quick pace, multi-cultural scenes and vibrant costumes make this act enjoyable for all ages. The second act of The Nutcracker offers wide variety in style, tempo and excitement; while the shortened length of the production and central New Jersey location is an excellent way to introduce ballet neophytes - especially children - to the cultural aspects of ballet.

NEWS FROM IRAQ
Tim KupplerGreetings from 4th Platoon! We miss you all, but time is passing by quickly. Two of our Soldiers went on R&R Leave this month and we have adjusted well to continue our mission: advise and assist the 48th Iraqi Army Brigade. Our battle rhythm keeps us very busy. One squad works at a Joint Headquarters (JHQ) with our Iraqi Army Brigade Staff counterparts. They help the Company and the Battalion to share information with the Iraqi Army. These Soldiers at the JHQ have a unique opportunity to interact with and learn from our counterparts. Our soldiers from the other squad work at our Company Headquarters and serve as Drivers and Gunners whenever we go on a mission. Each month the squads switch to get different experiences. During our free time, our Soldiers go the gym, play videogames and engage in very competitive games of ping pong! We hope everything is going well back at home!

TOUR ISRAEL WITH SHLC!
Last Call!  Time is running down for you to join Pastor Bob and others of our SHLC family on a 10 Day Biblical Tour of Israel, February 9 - 18th.   Imagine...Ash Wednesday in Jerusalem! That is on the schedule for this Pre-Lent Spiritual journey to the "Holy Land" of Jesus and Old Testament history.   There is no better way to prepare for Lent and Easter!

Among the places we'll visit are Caesarea, Megiddo, Nazareth, Cana, the Sea of Galilee, the Mt. of the Beatitudes, the Dead Sea, Masada, Qumran, the Jordan River, and the ancient walled city of Jerusalem where we can retrace the steps of the Lord Jesus from Palm Sunday through Easter.  There is also an optional 3-day extension through Sinai and the Red Sea to Egypt where we will see the Pyramids and the Sphinx.

A very reasonable and affordable cost of $2297 includes everything except US and Int'l Taxes, and gratuities.  Invite family, relatives, friends to join you for this spiritual experience of a lifetime.   Speak to Pastor Bob for a brochure and all other information and questions.
