"NEWS AND NOTES"
OF
Somerset Hills Lutheran Church

October 2009
FROM PASTOR BOB KUPPLER...

On September 20th - Celebration Sunday - Faith Martin, an applicant for the position of Contemporary Worship Leader of SHLC, sang the following song titled "Come To Jesus," by Chris Rice.   I've reprinted the words for your personal devotion and prayer time; I'm told that the actual recording is on our website www.shlc.net      May you be blessed by Faith's offering of praise to God!

Weak and wounded sinner, Lost and left to die,
O, raise your head for Love is passing by

Come to Jesus,Come to Jesus,
Come to Jesus and live!

Now your burden's lifted, And carried far away,
And precious blood has washed away the stain... so

Sing to Jesus ,Sing to Jesus ,
Sing to Jesus and live!

And like a newborn baby, Don't be afraid to crawl,
And remember when you walk sometimes we fall... so

Fall on Jesus, Fall on Jesus,
Fall on Jesus and live!

Sometimes the way is lonely, And steep and filled with pain,
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain... then

Cry to Jesus, Cry to Jesus,
Cry to Jesus and live!

O, and when the love spills over, And music fills the night,
And when you can't contain your joy inside... then

Dance for Jesus, Dance for Jesus,
Dance for Jesus and live!

And with your final heartbeat, Kiss the world goodbye,
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory's side... and

Fly to Jesus,Fly to Jesus, Fly to Jesus and live!

Fly to Jesus, Fly to Jesus,  Fly to Jesus and live!

SHLC PRAYER MINISTRY
Prayer handsJames 14:14 says:

"If you ask anything in my name, I will do it."  With this great promise in mind, we are starting a Prayer Ministry at SHLC.  There are three different ways to be involved in this ministry:

Prayer Network:  those who sign up for this will be divided into groups.  Each group will have a leader.  When a prayer request is received by the church office it will be passed on to Betty Vetter.  She will then call each of the leaders and give them the prayer request.  Then they will say an appropriate prayer to themselves and then call the next person on the list, etc.  In a short time many prayers are being offered for the request.  Prayer requests can also be given to Betty Vetter.  The same procedure will happen.  Pastor Bob will be informed of all prayer requests regardless if they are received by the office or by Betty.

Prayer Groups:  those who can will come to SHLC to meet for approximately one hour to pray for any requests and also for any personal prayers of the group.  There would be some Bible study on prayer for a few minutes.  The day, time and frequency is to be determined.  Hopefully, we'll be able to have two groups - one day time and one evening.

Individual prayer - these people would receive the prayer requests and then pray at home.  There would be no calls or meetings.

Of course, all prayer requests would be held in confidence.

We are in the formative stage of our Prayer Ministry and would be open to any suggestions.  We pray you are excited about this new ministry and that you'll sign-up for the area(s) which interest you!

For further info or to sign up via the phone, please call Betty Vetter (973-887-6027) or Russ Baccaglini (973-539-7930).

Watch for further announcements!!!

SMALL GROUPS
SMALL GROUPWHAT IS A SMALL GROUP?  How easy is it for us to lose closeness with one another in our church family?  Would you like to experience a closer Christian Friendship?  Each of our small group gatherings begins by catching up and visiting over snacks, followed by our timely discussions.  In honor of people's time, we try to end at 9 pm, but always have a "caring time" afterwards.  We always have an empty chair to encourage us to invite newcomers.  There is a place for you!  We would love for you to join us.

Monday (2nd & 4th): The group is discussing "Some Assembly Required - Instructions for an Amazing Marriage".  Info needed?  Contact Bill Vreeland at 908-221-1779.

KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE
Dear Friends,

I'm looking forward to January 1 -- for the first time ever the Minimib people will have a brand Biblespanking new New Testament and a daily Bible Reading Guide to take them through that New Testament in a year. Imagine the impact reading the New Testament through from beginning to end could have in their lives!

Paul talks about the positive effects, for example that faith grows by reading the Word of God: "Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ." (Romans 10:17) And again: "You know how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." (2Tim 3:14-17)

And of course Jesus enables us to understand what we are reading. "Then he opened their People Holding Biblesminds to understand the scriptures." (Luke 22:45)

All those positive benefits each day for 365 days! Wow - maybe this is something we should all consider doing in 2010!

In His Love and Grace,

Pastor John and Maila

MEET A FELLOW WORSHIPER
Mary Coates Sanders

saundersMary, one of our newer members, is already actively involved in our music. She sings in the adult and praise band choirs, plays the bells, and we have all enjoyed her magnificent flute solos. She is also the first of a two part Sanders series. Next month you will get to know her husband, Bob.

Mary was born in Albany, New York and later moved with her family to Voorheesville, where she lived for twenty-four years. She has many fond memories growing up, such as family visits to see her grandmother in Glenside, Pennsylvania, sleigh riding with her brother, camping as a Girl Scout and hearing the bullfrogs. In 1989 she took a memorable trip with her father to Germany and, a week later, flew to Denver with her church for the National Youth Gathering.

Mary received a BA in English from Moravian College and a Master of Library Science from the School of Information Science and Policy at SUNY Albany. In 1997 she met her husband, Bob, through a mutual friend and Bob's brother. A year later she was hired as a librarian at Morris County Library, where she still works today. Mary and Bob were married in 2000. They bought Bob's parents' house in Rockaway Township, which is now their home.

Mary began taking four years of piano lessons at age eight, and eight years of flute lessons beginning at age ten. In addition to her music, she enjoys visiting historical sites and going to concerts and plays with Bob. She also enjoys walking, downhill skiing, reading, gardening and, once in a while, taking on a small embroidery project.

Mary and Bob became members of Somerset Hills in December, after fellow church members suggested that they check us out. Mary says. "My faith is very important to me. It affects how I conduct myself throughout life's journey. Having faith helps guide me through difficult and challenging times; sometimes faith increases as a result. It's a tremendous source of strength, comfort, and peace to believe in a loving, forgiving God and in the ultimate sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ".

She feels that it is important to be a part of a church. "This connectivity provides us with spiritual nourishment through the Word, Sacrament, and songs of praise offered each week while being in fellowship with other believers who care for and pray for one another."

Mary says that she feels blessed to be a part of the Christian family at Somerset Hills Lutheran. So welcome her and be sure to look for Bob's story next month.

GENTLE SHEPHERD CHRISTIAN PRESCHOOL UPDATE
gscp logoGentle Shepherd Christian Preschool has started off the school year with sunshine and smiles.  We are all settling in to the daily school routines.  We welcomed Farmer Therese of Quiver Farms this week.  Farmer Therese brought Rooster Robbie and Henrietta the Hen to us and told us all about the farm they live on.  She gave every classroom an incubator and taught us how to be "Egg-Tenders".  We hope that we will see the miracle of chick hatching next Monday and Tuesday and we will have a week to enjoy the baby chicks!  We have so many great experiences in Preschool. Our visitation nights will be on the evenings of September 30th and October 1st.  Our parents will have an opportunity to meet each other and visit the classrooms.

We are also enjoying the great weather and the new playground.  We are so fortunate to have our new piece of playground equipment funded by our two years of fundraising and new mulch that was donated by a Gentle Shepherd family.  Our shade trees are growing, too (another donation by a GSCP family).  So we are outside everyday enjoying the great playground!

God  blesses our school with so many gifts.  The best gifts of all are the young children and families enjoying their days at preschool and the great staff that works so hard to have everyday be a new experience.

Thank you to all the people at SHLC who offered their volunteer hours to make Celebration Sunday a great day! The food , friendship and beautiful weather made for a perfect day!
PLI THANK YOU!
Dear Pastor and people of Somerset Hills:

Once again it is my privelege to write to you to express our sincere thanks for your continued prayers and financial support for the ministry of the Pastoral Leadership Institute (PLI).  What a blessing you continue to be as more and more pastors and their wives are prepared to intentionally lead their congregations in connecting more and more people to Jesus Christ.

I praise God for your faithfulness to this ministry.  It is a blessing to many and a witness to us of our partnership in the Gospel.

Sincerely,

SAMARITAN'S PURSE INTERNATIONAL RELIEF'S OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
occAll families are encouraged to participate in this simple hands-on mission project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas - Jesus Christ.

Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God's love.

How to pack a Shoe Box:

Use an empty shoe box (standard size).  You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required.  Most important, pray for the child who will receive your gift.

Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category:  2-4, 5-9, or 10-14.  Use the appropriate boy/girl label which may be picked up on the display table at church or printed online at http://www.samaritanspurse.org/images/occ_art/BoyGirlLabels.pdf.  Mark the correct age category on the label, and tape that label to the top of the box.

Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child such as small cars, stuffed animals, kazoos, yo-yos, jump ropes, slinky's, a toothbrush, toothpaste, hard candy and lollipops (double bagged), t-shirts, gum, socks, hair clips, ball caps, etc.  Do not include used or damaged items, war-related items, chocolate or food, liquids or lotions, medications or vitamins, breakable items or aerosol cans.  In a separate envelope, feel free to include a note to the child and photo of yourself and your family.  (If you include your name and address, the child may write back).

Please donate $7 or more for each shoe box you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can do this online at http://www.samaritanspurse.org/index.php/OCC/EZ_Give_Donations/  or pick up a donation envelope at the display table by the mailboxes at church.
Place a rubber band around each closed shoe box and drop off at SHLC no later than November 15th.
