"NEWS AND NOTES"
OF
Somerset Hills Lutheran Church

July and August 2009
FROM PASTOR BOB KUPPLER...
Please welcome our new  music director, Mrs. Joy Elowsky (see her biographical information below).  God is indeed good and gracious to have brought us together so that our worship would continue to be the highest and best that we are able to offer God.   Joy comes to us with a wealth of experience as a Lutheran musician, is already known by some of our members, and is eager to serve the Lord, lead our worship, and work with our music groups.   While we are thankful for her, we are also aware that her personal and family realities might possibly come to bear on her tenure with us.  Her husband, Pastor Joel Elowsky recently received his Ph.D and seeks to teach at the college/university/seminary level, even as he simultaneously offers his pastoral abilities to congregations in need of assistance.   While he will soon begin teaching at Eastern College near Philadelphia (commuting 3 days/week), he is open to other professorial opportunities that may arise at some time in the future.   Aware of this, we are grateful that Joy and her family will be part of the SHLC family and mission and ministry for the foreseeable future.   May the Lord bless her, and us, as together we strive to Bless the Lord and be a blessing to people, making a difference in people's lives!

Our new Sunday Evening Contemporary Event is off to a great start!  The two evening services in June met our expectations in terms of participation and our own growth and experience.   Though we are as yet unable to sustain the event on a weekly basis, that is one of our goals, as is the service being an entrance point for people who might be unchurched.  The informal, contemporary and teaching format is intentionally designed to provide an easy and non-threatening opening for people who are seeking to know more about God and about things spiritual.  As an additional blessing, the event also serves as an alternative service for SHLC'ers who might not be able to worship on a given Sunday morning.  Future Sunday Evening Events will be July 12th and 26, and August 9th and 23rd - all beginning at 5:15 pm and ending at 6 pm.   Be sure to be part of this new opportunity to serve and worship the Lord!

As you read this, the 2008-2009 Fiscal Year nears its June 30th ending.  Over the past year, SHLC average Sunday worship attendance has increased from 152 to 179.   May God be praised for the lives and hearts blessed when we meet the Lord in worship.  Tithes and offerings returned to the Lord and dedicated to our regular and planned ministry expenses have also increased almost 4% this fiscal year, and we expect to end the year at or near the "break-even" point of giving vs. expenses.  We thank God for this, especially since giving declined almost 8% in December 2008 and January 2009 from the previous year.   In the first 6 months of 2009, however, our congregations stewardship of tithes and offerings has been "flat" or "even" compared to the same period in 2008.  What does all of this mean?    As the Lord has blessed us, our response is to return blessings as our worship, trust and thanksgiving to him.  Though times and economies might be stressed, God continues to provide our every need, especially and including his grace and mercy in Christ, as well as our physical needs.  Therefore, we ought not be hesitant to freely and generously return tithes and offerings to God, so that the work of Christ would continue, and that we as God's people would be able to proclaim the only hope that endures and lasts.  Therefore I encourage you to worship the Lord every week (even during the summer!) and return your offerings to the Lord on a regular basis, even though you may be away.   God is good, and is worthy of our honor and praise!

2nd ANNUAL SHLC SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

Talcia and PastorFor a number of years, people of Plainfield, New Jersey have been recipients of some of our caring ministries. In the summer, children have received backpacks and school supplies supported by our Vacation Bible School mission offerings. Every December, our Sunday school, contributes to the hats/gloves/socks project. Additionally, we have supported the Bike Rodeo sponsored by the Plainfield Police Department, and have been involved in career day at Emerson Elementary School . On Sunday, June 7th we were pleased to expand our Plainfield Mission by awarding our second SHLC Plainfield High School Scholarship. Initiated by a donation from an SHLC family, the Scholarship was awarded to Talcia Haye. Plainfield HS suggested eight candidates who were interviewed by several members of SHLC. Talcia was selected because of her servant heart and work ethic. A dedicated student, Talcia is very involved in Peer Leadership mentoring ninth grade students.  She has overcome great personal challenges, is described by her teachers as "polite, well-mannered and possessing sensitivity unmatched by her peers" and as "a strong, young woman who will make great contributions to our society."  She will be attending Berkeley College.
(see thank you note from Talcia's sister elsewhere in the newsletter).

KOBON MINISTRY UPDATE
People Holding Bibles         Bible

Dear Friends,

The Minimib recently celebrated receiving the first book in their own language - the Word of God. The first book the Kobon people received in their own language was also the Word of God. And by God's grace, the first book the Haruai people will receive in their own language will also be the Word of God. Each group has previously received extracts from the Word in a series of Bible storybooks and calendars.

We read in Genesis chapter 11 that because of people's pride, the Lord confused the one language they all spoke so they would not understand one another. He scattered them over the face of the earth. When we came to Kobonland in 1972, we saw how effectively communication is blocked by language barriers. The Haruai, Kobon and Minimib are neighbors but they cannot understand one another. Since there was no alphabet for any of these languages, it was only by the spoken word that they were able to share their thoughts and ideas even within their own language group. Dropping leaflets from the air in any language, even their own, would have failed to communicate, since no one would have been able to read them.

As we look back on our years in Kobonland, it is very clear that this work is the Lord's work, not ours. We, along with you, are just privileged that the Lord gives us a part in it and allows us to see Him at work in the lives of these people. The Lord's plan was that the first written words these people would receive would be the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Part of that plan was the breaking down of the communication barrier with an alphabet at just the right time so His Word could come to them, speaking their language.

At Pentecost the Holy Spirit miraculously broke down the language barrier between the believers and the speakers of many other languages. Today the Lord continues to work through His church to overcome language barriers for the same specific purpose of communicating His message of love and grace. He desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. And we understand any message best when it is in our own language.

At Pentecost the people heard the Gospel in their own language and 3000 came to Jesus - the gathering-in of the harvest began with a bang. In Revelation 7:9 we read that in heaven when the gathering-in has been completed, there will be people of every language, completely united in one faith, one Lord. There will no longer be any need for different languages.

Meantime, we are privileged to see a foretaste of this final bringing together and gathering-in. The Living Word is bringing these once scattered hostile people together to live and work in peace to bring the Living Word to others. Former enemies, Haruai, Kobon, and Minimib are working together in our Living Word schools, daily bringing the Living Word to the children. The gathering-in continues. The Word of God literally brought people together Easter 2006 at the celebration of the coming of the Word to the Kobon people. Some of the biggest and happiest smiles that day were from Haruai and Minimib. And people from five ethnic groups attended the celebration of the coming of the Word to the Minimib last month. When the Lord comes in His Word He changes hearts and minds and attitudes. As we read in Paul's letter to the Ephesians, the Lord Himself breaks down dividing walls of hostility, fear and mistrust, reconciles us all to God in one body through the cross, and through His Word He preaches the Gospel of peace to all people.

It is a privilege to partner with you in the Kobon Ministry.

In His Love and Grace,

Pastor John and Maila

MEET A FELLOW WORSHIPER
JOHN PANKUCH

PankuchJohn was born in Lakewood, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie. Growing up, he was very active in sports. This included being captain of two undefeated football teams and captain of two basketball teams. John also played baseball and had major league coaches as manager and coaches for his teams. When John was seventeen, his family moved to suburban Pittsburgh. Because of the move, he was not eligible for most sports. Although he qualified for the Pennsylvania state finals in cross-country, he did not run because his eligibility was questioned. However, in a non-conference track meet, he set records for the 100, 200, and 400 meters. He also organized and played basketball with a team that won many tournaments.

John graduated from high school six months early and went to the University of Pittsburgh for pre-med and pre-law. After two years, he was accepted into medical school at the Cleveland Clinic. With two years of ROTC behind him, he had to decide whether to enlist in the army reserve for two more years of ROTC or go to medical school. He enlisted. His brother, who was one year younger, also faced the medical school or ROTC decision. Like John, he enlisted. They had planned on practicing medicine together, but his brother was killed in the Battle of the Bulge.

After graduating from college six months early, John went on active duty and served in the Pacific, where his unit was on Okinawa and was prepared for the initial landing and invasion of Japan. Fortunately the atom bombs saved him and countless other troops. He then went on to Koizumi, Japan, as part of the Occupation Army.

In March 1946, John received his discharge from the army and married Evelyn the following May. (They met at a 1941 college conference in Eaglesmere, Pennsylvania.) John attended law school at the University of Pittsburgh and, again, graduated six months early. He was a trial attorney in Pennsylvania and Federal courts. In 1956 he was admitted to the United States Supreme Court.

John left private practice to work in corporate law for Sears and Allstate. In 1969, after living in Windsor, Connecticut, Pittsford and Chappaqua, New York, John and Evelyn moved to their present home in Basking Ridge. His work involved establishing salaried or independent law firms for corporations. John was the lead attorney on many class action suits and served as a master to resolve law suits in the New York Civil Court. He handled and directed handling on suits against the corporations and worked on bar association committees in New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania.

John retired at 62, to enjoy life and his family more fully. He and Evelyn have two daughters, Linda and Donna. Linda lives in Middlesex and is in hospital management. Donna, an attorney, lives in Basking Ridge with her husband Scott Legband and sons John and Lane. The Legbands are also members of SHLC.

A lifelong Lutheran, John's faith is reflected in what he has done. This includes working on committees to build new churches in Connecticut and New York, where he also led adult Bible groups. Here at SHLC, he served on the building committee that added our pre-school. He was on the church council thirty years, chaired both the trustees and our stewardship committee and was our financial secretary for thirteen years.  John has been and still is one of our regular ushers.

In his community, John is president of his neighborhood association, and has amassed over 8000 hours of volunteer work at the Veterans Hospital. When not volunteering, John enjoys traveling and watching his grandsons play Ridge sports.

Please speak to Becky if you would be willing to supervise the showing of a video to Sunday School age children during our new 5:15 pm contemporary service. We are very pleased that Melissa Connolly-Silverman was the recipient of the Sunday School quilt.  She came in at the last minute with a bid of $125.00.  All four of her children made squares for the quilt and they were very excited.  This money will go to support our Bethania Mission project.  Congratulations Connolly-Silverman family!
