About This Newsletter
This is the third edition of NHS '65 News. Our first two editions have been very well received with over 300 classmates receiving and opening the previous edition. While your reunion committee has contact information for over 650 classmates we have about 430 email addresses. As a result of our first two mailings and continued detective work we have added over 50 more addresses to our database over the past month or so.  Some have provided photos and stories that will be included in this and future editions.

We continue to need your help in suggesting content, providing photos, and especially in helping us keep our list of contact information current.

We have also added 3 names to our "In Memorium" list since our last newsletter:

                      Reginald "Reggie" Cyrus
                         Mary Knott Bochniak
                            Richard Zagorsky

May they rest in peace.

We would especially appreciate your help in locating our remaining 300 lost classmates. You may review a listing of "missing" classmates on our class website. If you have any information that would help us contact these members of our class please e-mail your information along to Karen Walker Lowman or call Karen at (410)544-8204.

NHS '65 Website
Our website   www.classreport.org/usa/md/hyattsville/nwhs/1965/  introduced in our first newsletter that was sent out November 6, has been a resounding success. The site receives an average of 50 hits per day with almost 4,900 hits since opening. John Newquist has posted over 110 of our individual yearbook photos  into the profiles of those who have entered significant personal information or who have otherwise requested for them to be posted. We have added quite a few photos from the Compass, our yearbook.  Contact John if you would like to send him a recent photo for the "Then and Now" slide show.

NHS Today
There has been some discussion around what interested classmates might do to show some support for NHS today, either individually or collectively. The following is taken from the Northwestern High School Alumni website and addresses what might be done. If you think there might be an opportunity for us please let me know. thanks. Dwight.

Northwestern High School is very proud of all of the successful students that have passed through our doors in years past.  We can boast having trained professional athletes in football and basketball, professional entertainers in music and movies and countless professionals in fields from medicine to academia.  Northwestern would like to tap into this resource to assist us in better serving our current population.  There are many ways our alumni can assist us in this task, such as:

  • Donation of time.  Contact us to find out when you can come in and assist the school community with planning projects, testing, administrative assistance, etc.
  • Donation of equipment/materials.  Is your business upgrading your computers?  Do you have a contact that can provide sports uniforms or art materials?
  • Speaking Opportunity.  Do you have expertise that you would be willing to share with our students?  Come and share that with a single class, a whole day or even the entire school.  We are always looking for inspirational and graduation speakers so contact us today to schedule your appearance.
  • Volunteer an Internship Opportunity.  Northwestern is always on the lookout for internship opportunities for our seniors.  If you own a business or are in the position to accept interns please contact us to set up a relationship that will benefit your business and propel our student forward into college or the working world.
  • Create or Donate to a Scholarship.  Each year we send hundreds of students to two and four year colleges and universities as well as countless trade schools and the military.  Please consider donating to one of our very worthy scholarships and assist our students in accomplishing this transition.
  • Become a Mentor.  Students of all ages at Northwestern can benefit from developing a relationship with a professional.  Become a mentor to a single student or a whole class and share your experience and expertise with our young people.
  • Donation of Money.  Please consider making a charitable contribution to your former school.

Jared Matesky "Then"    Liza's dad   Jared now

Northwestern Memory:    Jared Matesky stealing the scene as Alfie Doolittle in the Senior Class production of MY FAIR LADY.

And Jared is wowing them still, along with wife Diane, in Florida.

In late December, Jared was in Broadway 101, a show with 10 big production numbers from the Great White Way.  If you were lucky enough to catch the performance, you would have found him as Tevye in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, singing "If I were a Rich Man" and "Tradition"; and in the HAIR segments featuring "Let the Sun Shine In" and "Age of Aquarius"

The latest project for Jared and wife Diane is a big talent fundraiser at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach to benefit the Wellington Regional Medical Center.

Diane Joyce, Jared's wife of 9 years, is also an accomplished performer, having sung with Duke Ellington's band, in officers' clubs worldwide and at Cleopatra's Barge in Las Vegas. She also is a former recording artist with the Marvelettes and the Drifters among others.  A lot of melody in that household!

Jared meanwhile has been performing ever since he took the stage at Northwestern. For the past 4 years, he has been performing 4 to 5 times each month with a variety troupe at temples, country clubs, senior facilities, women's clubs and other entertainment venues.

He left New York City to retire, but it seems he and Diane still have the greasepaint in their veins.

Favorite Photos
One of our classmates suggested we might enjoy remembering our days at NHS by looking at some of our favorite photos from the Compass and the Nor'Wester with some helpful interpretive comments. If you would like to suggest favorite photos and "updated" captions please let me know. Well, here goes. Episode I of "my favorite photos".

In order to know each of us better, our principal                                              Bruce Lieberman stares into distant space as he
would memorize our zip codes from the Student                                              adds imagined numbers on his Czechoslavakian
Directory. His stapled, cardboard pocket silk, and                                            calculator. He would suck you in by adding, adding

all what the odds are that that is a hand-tied bow                                           division would start pouring out as he hit his stride.
tie. But we'll leave him to his work........                                                            Then when you were feeling complacent, like you'd
seen it all, straight out of left field, he would bomb
you with a square root. Bruce was always really
                                                                                                                          fun to have at meetings.

Elizabeth Faber is saddened by her situation. It wasn't until much later that we realized that holiday fruitcakes had been
stalking young women for years. She is sensing that creeped-out feeling where she's sure someone is watching
her, and then she turns around and sees all this fruitcake - over 200 pounds of fruitcake - and then she turns around
again and it's gone. But we think, wait a minute, wait a minute, THERE'S NO REASON FOR THERE TO BE OVER 200 POUNDS
OF FRUITCAKE IN THE HOUSE!!!

Help make this newsletter and our website better. Please send interesting photos to
Dwight Gentry, newsletter editor, with a short statement about what's going on in your life. Where are you working now? Do you have children or grandchildren? Have you traveled to interesting places lately? What about retirement plans, hobbies, community activities. Your classmates would love to know. And, of special interest, are you still in touch with classmates? If so, we'd love to know how you have maintained your friendships over the years and interesting things you may have done together. Photos and stories are needed!

                                                  The Dash

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end

He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?
