Last month's newsletter discussed the challenges of maintaining your weight during the holiday season. Here are some tips to help you during your upcoming parties:
1. Create a pre-party deficit. Eat smaller meals with fewer calories during the day so you can still stay within your caloric guidelines while enjoying yourself at the party.
2. Consume alcohol in moderation. Alcohol has little, if any, nutritional value and can be very high in calories, along with its appetite stimulating effect. Enjoy a diet or club soda in between your alcoholic drinks. This makes sense from a safety as well as a nutritional standpoint.
3. Socialize away from the table. By physically distancing yourself from the food, you will eat less and focus more on your friends and family.
4. Don't go to the party hungry. Try eating a low calorie snack 30 minutes prior to the party, along with a big glass of water.
5. Eat the good stuff. Opt for fresh fruits, vegetables, and other low calorie snacks. However, be sure to watch out for food dips which are high in calories and fats.
6. Stop eating when you are full. There is no reason to stuff oneself at the party. Take small portions of what you want to try so you don't overeat. Remember, you will have the opportunity to eat many goodies over the next couple of months, so you don't have to eat them all at once.
Next month we'll discuss how you can successfully incorporate regular exercise into this busy time of year. Remember the overall goal you are trying to achieve, and make it your objective during the holidays to maintain progress towards that goal.
