Aspen Activities
Greetings!

The flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping, and summer is almost here.  Like most Iowans, I too look forward to the end of winter and being able to spend time in the great outdoors.  This desire to be outside as much as I can requires me to change my approach to my fitness routine, while at the same time, ensuring that I keep a well rounded regime not leaving "essentials" out.

Once nice weather is here, I will do most of the first "essential", cardio workouts, outside.  Some of the activities I engage in are:
·  Walks or runs with our cocker spaniel, Lacey
·  Bike rides with my wife
·  Rollerblading
·  Tennis
In a normal week, I will engage in these "essential" activities 3-4 times for thirty to sixty minutes.

Just as important, I believe it is imperative to keep up my resistance training, the second "essential", year round.  I will be sure to lift weights at the club at least twice per week to ensure I maintain my current gains.  As I've gotten older, I realize that the old axiom "use it or lose it" seems more and more true.  I have been in the fitness industry for many years and I have witnessed countless members stop resistance training during summer months. Unfortunately, they give up all the benefits they worked so hard to achieve during the first several months of the year.

Here are some other summer workout ideas:
·  Get involved in a summer softball league
·  Learn a new sport or activity such as tennis
·  Modify your hour workout to 30 minutes of
resistance training and 30 minutes of cardio outside
·  Participate in a walking or running event such as the
   Dam to Dam race

Make this one of your best summers ever!  Most importantly, be sure to include both "essential" components to your exercise program so you can continue to progress your body and the way you feel!!!
