Located at 4221-B Connecticut Avenue, NW, DC neighboring the Cleveland/Woodley Park, one block from the Van Ness Metro station, 876 Café opened its doors on Monday, April 9th, 2012 and specializes in creative interpretations of traditional Caribbean cuisine.

According to Moreen Wallace, Operations Manager of 876 Café, "We're excited about bringing this concept to DC. We've created a dining experience that appeals to a range of diners and those wanting to try something interesting and new. We offer an upscale, casual atmosphere with moderately priced and tempting new twists on traditional Caribbean cuisine."  Our menu was created in partnership with Chef Oji Jaja, "a phenomenal Caribbean chef on the rise" whose progress has been applauded by many foodies. In 2010, Oji was nominated for the Jamaican Observer Newspaper "Chef of the Year" award.

Helping my friend, Racquel drink to 10 years of (her) marriage
Greetings,

We are almost half way through June and from where I am sitting (or getting out), I have not seen as many Caribbean people out and about as I would like.  Now, some of you may get upset to hear me say this, but HAVE YOU ALL GONE AMERICAN on me?  Whaapen to unno?  Wha mek unno a ack so boring?  Cho man, do betta dan dat!!

That felt good to get off my chest, so I hope that in the upcoming days and nights, I will see the DMV massive at some of the many events that are being planned in MY area.  I know that this is a country-wide thing so please understand that this month belongs to us and it is our duty to represent our Caribbean island all of this month.

I have been out and about but not to as many events I would have liked to attend, but I really AM just one person who cannot be in all places at the same time (contrary to popular belief). I just made a joke on Facebook today that I really HAVE to pull my clone out of the basement because I want to go to allllll of the events which are happening, and do not see how that it womanly possible.

Getting my album autographed by Niyorah

Anyway, I checked out Niyorah last Thursday at the Crossroads.  The show sell aff and would have been sold out had they been charging at the door.  Kudos to Niyorah for such am amazing performance and his mere essence.  Big ups to Ace Lewis and Wasi Philbert and all who came out to celebrate VI music.

Striking a pose with Stefanie Belnavis

Sunday morning was all about Stefanie Belnavis' dance class at the Dance Place in NE, DC.  What an amazing young lady and dancer she is.  The drummers were amazing and I had danced way too much -- my back felt if for 2 days straight. Ouch!

Click HERE to listen to last night's PEP Talk Interview with Stefanie Belnavis -- truly a beauty with purpose!
Wendy Mitchell
Wendy Mitchell on fire!!!

Sunday evening, I had the most amazing experience at a church banquet.  I know -- I have not been to church in ages, unless it is a wedding, christening or funeral -- but I do pray daily so I know that THAT counts.  Many thanks to my dearest Claudette Henry for the invitation.  The highlight of the evening was the Caribbean roll call by Trinidad & Tobago's gospel sensation, Wendy Mitchell (formerly Tiny Winey of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires).  Of course, the Jamaicans won again by having the most people in the place :-)

Thanks for all the great comments on the article featuring me in the June issue of 'Your Money eZINE' - a Jamaican based e-magazine.  It also features many other interesting personalities and articles so please click HERE to check it out (I am on page 18) and feel free to send in your feedback.

For more information on the month, click on Caribbean American Heritage Month (CAHM).  Be sure to check out the Calendar of Events to see what you should definitely consider getting into this month.

As I mentioned, this month is all about EVENTS celebrating the Caribbean culture and heritage so please scroll down to see some of the ones we are hosting and promoting.

ALL THINGS CARIBBEAN THIS JUNE
 CAHM2012

In June 2005, the House of Representatives unanimously adopted H. Con. Res. 71, sponsored by Congresswoman Barbara Lee, recognizing the significance of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States.  On February 14, 2006, the resolution similarly passed the Senate, culminating a two-year, bipartisan and bicameral effort.

READ THE PRESIDENTIAL PROCLAMATION:

Individuals and families from Caribbean countries have journeyed to America's shores for centuries. Some were brought here against their will in the bonds of slavery. Some immigrated to America as children, clutching a parent's hand.  READ MORE HERE.
