WHAT ARE YOU GIVING UP FOR LENT?

sankofapresentation
Richard Willis (CEO of Sankofa International), me and Barrington Salmon (East of the River reporter) at 'SANKOFA: Africa Awareness Workshop' held at Washington Seniors Wellness Center on 02/17/12.

This one is a rewind from last year, so if it sounds familiar, it is because I wrote it before.  The message is still relevant and I am actually feeling a little out of it (maybe because I kind of sort of gave up coffee for Lent, LOL).

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.  Have you ever wondered why they call it Ash Wednesday? It has something to do with ashes, foreheads and crosses...Even if you are not religious, making a sacrifice for 40 days might be a good exercise.  Lent is also about self-discipline; so self-examination and self-improvement activities are highly recommended.  Who knows? Maybe giving up dairy, meats, sex, coffee, liquor, wine,
or other "vices" could change your life for the better and you could actually start cultivating a new and wonderful habit.  Think about THAT as well. I can already see the non-religious folks rolling their eyes at me, so here is a little humor to keep things light.

Rosie:  "So, Helen, I am giving up liquor and fish for Lent.  What are YOU giving up?"

Helen:  "I am giving up sex."

Rosie: "SEX?  Why the hell would you give up sex for Lent?  How is your hubby going to react to that?"
Helen:  "Oh, I am sure he will be ecstatic.  He claims that I have not given up any in months."

Rosie: (Drops on floor laughing) "I like that.  That one is for my Newsletter."

Special thanks to Benjy Myaz for that amazing interview he gave me on PEP Talk Radio last week.  If you missed it, click HERE to listen and/or download.  Very many thanks to my extended family for sharing with me and my son this past Sunday -- we love you loads. Happy birthday (again) to Dorothea McDaniel -- you make 78 look sooooo good.  Kudos to my ERFSC work team for a wonderful Black History Potluck and Story Telling on Ash Wednesday -- it was so beautiful that many of us shed tears.

We may be different, but we share a common BLACK History and "we define what is cool in America" and beyond.

 jacobmiller

Jacob Miller was born in Mandeville, Jamaica on May 4, 1952.  He was a  a Jamaican reggae artist who first recorded with Clement Dodd.

While recording, Miller continued pursuing a solo career, recording 'Forward Jah Jah Children,' 'Girl Don't Com' produced by Gussie Clarke, and 'I'm a Natty' produced by Joe Gibbs. He earned second place in Jamaica's 1976 Festival Song competition with the song 'All Night Till Daylight' and produced his first solo album in 1978. While most of Miller's solo work were backed by Inner Circle members, his preferred Rockers style diverged from the tendency of Inner Circle to experiment with other genres, including pop, soul, funk and disco. The track which has brought him the most lasting recognition is the rockers standard 'King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown' with Augustus Pablo, a dub of 'Baby I Love you So,' engineered by King Tubby. Other notable tracks with Augustus Pablo include 'Keep on Knocking,' 'False Rasta' and 'Who Say Jah No Dread', all produced by Pablo. The album 'Who Say Jah No Dread' features two versions of each of these tracks; the original and a dub engineered by King Tubby.

Jacob Miller is also the uncle of UK reggae sensation, Maxi Priest.

Miller was killed in a car accident at the age of 27 on March 23, 1980.
