CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH

miblack

Peppy at Caribbean Fridays, Karma Lounge, MD on 01/28/11

Welcome to BLACK History month!

Each year, I complain about us "getting" a mere 28 days to celebrate our history and as I was about to start doing that again, I realized that I made a vow to myself to stop complaining about things which I have no control of.  What I CAN control is the way I celebrate BLACK history, and dig this; there is no law which says I have to begin celebrating our history on February 1st and end on February 28th.  Be that as it may, this month is very special for me and my black people, so let us get all into it and start celebrating our collective history, and each other as many of us do our role in shaping history.

Like most black people (I hope), my first instinct is to support black businesses and I have a special connection with blacks who are Jamaicans (for the obvious reasons of course).  It does not matter how many times I have been burned doing business with blacks, I still stick with my favorite color.  Like most people who want to see all black people thrive, I am heartbroken when we tear down our own kind, and engage in all types of tactics just because we do not want to see others become successful.  What is UP with that?  Whether folks do it knowingly or sub-consciously, it has a stinky stench and it makes me want to throw up.  Case in point, I got this note from someone I spent time speaking with briefly recently.  "Peppy, I strongly considered the words you shared with me although our meeting was brief...they weighed heavily on my thoughts and my being. I appreciate the wisdom sistah. It seems that no matter now many books a brother can read and how many lectures, seminars, or workshops I can attend, learning how to be more positive than negative towards my own black people seems to be one of the higher lessons to live by in life. Thank you for the wisdom Rosie."  Despite all the negative things the brother had said which led to my "lecture," I gave him his props for admitting his anti-black actions while professing to be pro-black, and sent some love some his way.  The most important thing is that he really IS trying to exhale the negativity.  I know we have been brainwashed throughout history, but we really can turn things around and control our minds, thoughts, and actions.

So here I go again, with the things I CAN control.  Since this is MY forum, I can control what I put out there for you to read.  I can also control the way I spend my money and the businesses and people I support.  You can too.  I believe in race first and support blacks as much as I can.  In fact, at times folks like to joke that I am prejudiced because I will go out of my way to find out if this or that business is black owned before I spend my hard earned dollars.  No apologies there.

Anyway, each February, I offer a BLACK history month special to my subscribers and especially small business owners; where I cut my service prices in half to do my part in supporting them.  I mean, this is a black business and I need to eat, right?  Anyway, I am not hungry (right now), so this month I have a much better deal! I am not charging any BLACK person even a penny to advertise in my newsletter or on my Web site this month.  Yes, you read correctly...Two black businesses and two black personalities will be featured each week.  First come, first served -- and just like the Universe, I do not play favorites.

Email me (do not call me) with your logo and/or photo, your bio or "About Us" for your business, and the links for your product and/or service and it will be on and popping!  Now is your chance to really get something FREE from PEP as we big up all blacks, all month long!

  • Popular Jamaican black musician and legend - the late Bob Marley will be celebrated in February so be sure to get your fill of reggae this month (check below for "Trenchtown Rock" flier).

  • Ensure that you do the necessary HIV/AIDS checks and get educated as we celebrate Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on February 7.

  • February is also American Heart Month and we are encouraged to wear RED this Friday, February 5 (especially black women)

QUICK LINKS

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE USA

Heart disease is a staggering health problem and a leading cause of death for American women and men.  Thankfully, there are steps each of us can take to prevent this chronic disease.  In a time when one in three adults in the United States is living with some form of cardiovascular disease, American Heart Month provides an important reminder that it is never too early to take action to improve our heart health.

All Americans should be aware of risk factors that can lead to heart disease, including:  high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and family history.  Practicing everyday habits such as eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting sodium consumption, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco, and moderating alcohol intake can reduce these risks.  Each of us can be proactive about our well being, and my Administration is committed to helping Americans protect themselves from chronic conditions like heart disease.  Under the Affordable Care Act, all new individual and group health plans must now provide recommended preventive care and services without a copayment, coinsurance, or deductible.  These potentially life saving screenings include blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and body mass index tests, as well as counseling on quitting smoking, losing weight, and eating well.  To learn more about the risk factors and prevention of heart disease, I encourage all Americans to visit:  www.CDC.gov/HeartDisease.

MEET DIANNE HENRIQUES-DARBOUZE

dianne

Dianne Henriques-Darbouze was born in Kingston, Jamaica. She migrated to the United States when she was 5 years old, attended NYC public school and went on to receive her BA from Binghamton University.

Fresh out of college, Dianne landed her first job at top advertising company, Ogilvy & Mather in New York City.  While there, she was introduced to preparing presentations in a PowerPoint layout. "I was always a fast typist, so I worked at most of the big name companies during my summer vacations." After a year, she moved on and worked at The Health & Hospital Corporation for NYC as a public relations assistant. This was one of her most fascinating jobs, as she got to interact with very interesting people in the media. Doors were opened for her and she began her first "real work" in designing brochures, newsletters, business cards, and handled the bulk of the marketing projects for the Hospital.

After getting her feet wet in the designing field, Dianne began freelancing at various companies to gain more experience.  "I really enjoyed creating designs for others to enjoy and wanted to enhance my skills and diversity by working with a variety of people and companies."  In 1997 (after sending her resume year after year), Diane was called in for an interview at Standard & Poor's -- a company she had always dreamed of working at. In her interview, she mentioned that she had applied many times, and coupled with her skills and experience, she was hired almost immediately. As Dianne likes to say "Persistence pays off eventually."

Dianne has worked on many financial designs for S&P, which can be boring at times. In light of that, she usually looks for outside ventures, where she can really show her design skills. The irony of that is that her Web site is not fully functional, because she spends most of her time working on others, such as Peppy Entertainment & Promotions, LLC's.

Dianne lives in New York and is married with three beautiful children, Antonio, Angelie and Nadia.

To contact Dianne for design work, call 347-228-3397 or email her at diondarb@gmail.com
