Friends,

pepflemotvI try to make it a point of duty to not discuss politics too much in my newsletters.  Thing about it is that try as we may, we cannot escape being involved in politics - whether it is at the office, among friends, the politics of sex (men are from Mars and women are from Venus), etc., etc.  This past Tuesday was all about "POLITRICKS" as some love to call it -- and more precisely, the Democrats versus the Republicans.  Interestingly enough, while I was driving on Monday I saw a sign that made me laugh for about 15 minutes straight:  "Liberals treat dogs like people, and conservatives treat people like dogs."   Whether YOU believe that the role of the government is to guarantee that no one is in need OR that the government's role is to provide people the freedom to pursue their own goals, is none of MY business.  What I would love to see is this sentiment that has been coming out of the Barack Obama camp "...If we set aside the old politics that have kept us apart, there's no limit to what we can achieve."

So leading up to this past Tuesday...many of us were flooded with emails from both political parties, posts on our social networking sites, messages on our TVs and radios, and the numerous billboards that have been strategically placed all over town for many months now (I can't wait for THOSE to come duh...uggghhhh).  I personally heard President Barack Obama on at least 6 radio stations between Monday and Tuesday of this week alone -- literally begging folks to go out and vote.  The man seemed to be EVERYWHERE!  I really love his hands on approach and I actually like his politics.  Despite all the President's efforts before he took office; since he has been in office; and leading up to this past Tuesday's elections, the Democrats took an ass-whooping at the polls and the Republicans now have majority control in the House and Senate.  Mi dun talk bout dat!

Also this week, the Caribbean took a beating as Hurricane Tomas hit St. Lucia very hard.  It is being reported that there are about 14 deaths and an estimated 7 people are missing.  While I was there recently, it rained pretty much every day but there was no denying the beauty of the island.  My prayers go out to all the families who were affected by the deaths and I pray that normalcy will return to the island very soon; especially the town of Soufriere where I had the occasion to spend a most incredible day.  Barbados got some showers too, but nothing major I am told.  Prime Minister David Thompson was laid to rest yesterday -- may his soul rest in peace.

November is already here, and pretty soon we will all be running around trying to buy enough food to feed the multitude as Thanksgiving approaches, and enough "stuff" on sale when Black Friday comes.  As you go about your everyday business, start thinking of ways you can help the less fortunate this season. As you prepare for the colder weather, start cleaning out your closets and consider donating a coat/jacket, a hat/scarf, some socks/gloves, and your time to those who are really in need.

Give thanks,

12 YEAR OLD WINS JERK FESTIVAL WITH VEGETARIAN DISH
(Article provided by Cordell Wright)

essence

"This year, Atlanta's Top Jerk Chef goes to a 12-year old girl, Essence." These were the words Sunday September 5, 2010 at the 5th Annual Atlanta Caribbean Jerk Festival as Essence ran to the stage jumping up and down in excitement! The festival which takes place at Panthersville Stadium in Decatur, GA draws thousands each year over the Labor Day weekend and hosts a Caribbean Jerk Cook-off that is one of its major attractions, where chefs and aspiring chefs put their best foot forward to wow the judges with their tasty tantalizing jerk dishes.

The contest, which in the past has only had adult competitors, received a new addition this year when 12-year old Essence Snowden, who has a passion for cooking, asked one of the festival organizers, Glen Simmonds, for permission to be one of their 2010 contestants. Upon approval, Essence quickly mailed in her application with $50 of her birthday money for the entry fee.

The crowd watched in awe as Essence prepared her divine jerk creations on the spot with a dynamite presentation that left many wanting to know more about eating healthy. Many festival goers kept coming over eager to buy food, not knowing she had nothing to sell. But even more unique, she won the competition with something that had never been done before, JERK VEGETARIAN food.  Her Jerk Lentil Patties, Jerk Kale Salad, and her Barbecue Jerk Tofu Kabobs were a winner!

Essence has many endeavors to further her cooking skills. She is creating a 2011 Healthy Eating Cooking Calendar as well as Cookbook. If you are interested in doing a story or article, please contact Queen Taese (Essence's mother) at 678-368-8593 or email at royalpowermoves@yahoo.com

Immigration and Criminal law - The Forbidden Crossroads:

One of the more treacherous pitfalls when it comes to U.S. immigration laws is when your "criminal" past catches up with you and creates nothing short of havoc in your life. United States immigration laws took a drastic turn for the harsh in 1996, and ever since, any immigrant (here defined as anyone that is either an undocumented national of a country other than the U.S. or a green card holder) caught in the crossfires of U.S. immigration and criminal law violations must proceed with informed caution
When in the mix of a criminal legal matter, the "easier" and instinctively smarter option is to "cop a plea," especially when doing so will evade jail time, or provide an immediate route to the possibility of an expunged record in the future. Well, consider yourself forewarned.  If you (or someone you know and care for) is caught in such a predicament, be sure to seek proper legal counsel from both a criminal and immigration attorney before entering any formal plea within criminal proceedings. This extra precaution could make all the difference between certain removal from the U.S. or the option of remaining within the U.S.  This precaution must not be taken lightly, for as U.S. immigration laws are written, even if you are a green card holder and have lived within the U.S. since your youth, one blip on the criminal radar can be all it takes to send you on the stressful trek of removal from the U.S. Further, sometimes the most benign, and/or undramatic circumstances can trigger U.S. immigration authorities involvement in your future.  CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.
