CONGRATS TO MONIQUE JAMES -- MS. TROPICAL PARADISE 2010 | |
First there were 11; then 6; then 1 -- Monique James who had also won the NY leg of the competition was crowned Miss Tropical Paradise 2010 on Saturday, October 9 in Negril, Jamaica. The crowd responded very well when the winner and runner ups were chosen and it was obvious that there was no ONE favorite while the girls were parading. As a judge, it was interesting to see the girls in action on Friday night when they did the fashion show and also on coronation night. In my eyes, one from 4 would win as they had talent, class, a seemingly great personality, and were well spoken enough to "represent" if chosen. Three of the 4 I had in mind were in the top 6 so I think myself and the other judges (all males) have pretty good eyes.I was the "rose among thorns" and it felt kind of nice being surrounded by four men, while observing how they each responded to the different body types and looks of the contestants. Beauty is really in the eyes of the beholder... One thing I must say is that all the girls look better in person than on camera; most had the "IT" factor; and some are better suited to be models.Despite the rain and other minor hitches, the night was great and the patrons behaved very well even when the event had to be moved inside the Club due to showers of blessings. The entertainment was tasteful and Happy Love's rendition of "Little Green Apples" left most folks in awe. Congratulations to Ms. James all the finalists; thanks to Oral Welshman from New Horizons Agency in Barbados for the stellar job he did with the fashion show and the girls in the competition; and big ups to Marcia Deans of MVD Entertainment for staging the 11th Annual Ms. Tropical Paradise Beauty Pageant in beautiful Jamaica.Click HERE to read and see more.

Friends,
It has been two weeks since my last email and before you ask -- NO, I do not feel guilty for not checking in. I was on vacation and loving every minute of it so "work" was the last thing on my mind. During my time off, I got to experience the very beautiful and peaceful island of St. Lucia and my larger, more beautiful and vibesy, Jamaica! I am still shaking my head at the incredible energy that Jamaicans in general have -- they are truly "black people plus tax" in every sense of the word. In event event, I was literally in tropical paradise on both islands. The four days in St. Lucia was not enough but the one really great day I had exploring Sourfriere was enough to make me fall in love with the island. Being in Jamaica for a week was sheer bliss and I jumped back into my Jamaican "habit" like a well oiled machine. Even though I no longer live there, Jamaica will always be my HOME and truth be told, even though I just got back, I already miss home. Reconnecting with family I had not seen in over 20 years and some I had never met before while in Jamaica was icing on the cake, so I am still on a high and counting my blessings that I was able to incorporate that during my vacation. Family is the most important thing to me (even the ones who get on my last nerves) so keeping them in my life and hanging with them despite geographical distances make me peppier than ever! Above from left are my cousin and second cousins who I could have passed on the street and not even realized we are related. At right is my Aunt, Dotty who I could not pass on the street even if I were wearing very dark glasses. Even though I had not seen her in about 20 years, she looks just like my mother and a lot like she used to back in the day.
During my time off I communicated with many folks both in the islands and back in the States -- to find out about their lives, culture, etc. and to keep folks updated on my "movements." After having one too many conversations, it dawned on me that many folks who live in places like St. Lucia and Jamaica want to flock to the USA for "greener pastures" -- sometimes by any means necessary, and many of us who now live in the "land of opportunity" dream of emigrating to islands such as St. Lucia and Jamaica that have friendlier people, a more peaceful atmosphere, beachers galore, excellent food, and the real greener pastures (I could go on and on...) As the Jamaican saying goes "wanty wanty cyaan get it, and getti getti nuh want it." Simply put it means that those who want it, cannot get it; and those who get it, do not want it. Never forget to count your blessings especially the ones we tend to take for granted.
While in Jamaica, I insited on speaking patois especially when dealing with the vendors. "I am NOT a tourist" I told them, and they knowingly responded "Yeah, but yuh nuh live yah nuh more." While it may seem like I said it to keep the prices down (which I kinda sorta did), I also meant it when I said it, as I consider my visits to Jamaica returning home, and once surrounded by MY people, I speak in OUR language. A so it fi guh.
For those of you who would like to see my online album of my St. Lucian experience, email me and I will send you the link. We are working on a trip back there next May for the Jazz Festival, so if you want to party with PEP, start saving your hard earned money. Below is a photo of me enjoying an absulutely amazing day in the town of Soufriere (notice the famous Pitons in the background).
Big ups to the management and staff of Coco Palm Resort in St. Lucia for taking care of us during our stay there; hail up to Don the driver for taking us around; hello to my Soufriere sidekick, Rachael for the exceptional day we spent together; and thanks to everyone who worked hard to ensure that my stay in St. Lucia was memorable -- Finiana, Ponsi, Wilson, and Andrea. This little island is definitely up there on my list of places you HAVE to visit.
So many people to thank who made Jamaica really nice this time: Adam McGregor, Marion Campbell, and the Sunset Beach Resort crew; Michelle of United Car Rentals; Tony Cobb of WRTN Radio 93.5FM; Marcia Deans of MVD Entertainment; the staff at Travellers Beach Resort; Carol McLean, Lyn Palmer and Neville (the Mobay crew); Aunty Dotty, Angola, Courtney, and the clan; and the folks (some pictured below) who rocked the Negril beach party on Sunday night...hilarious.
I hope you enjoyed the long Columbus Day weekend and are doing great. Happy Heroes Day weekend to the Jamaican massive. Happy Birthday to Michael Campbell and everyone celebrating this week.

 | AN APPEAL FOR HELP FOR A FATHER, FROM HIS DAUGHTER |
"Jumbo everyone,
Throughout my Dad's illness I have watched the
outpouring of love and support from his extended
family and friends. My Dad is preparing to undergo another round of serious medical treatment and I am here to ask that this support continues.
It has been determined by all of the doctors involved with his medical program that Radiation Therapy is the best course of treatment.
For the next six to eight weeks my Dad will have to have radiation treatment five times a week. He will also have to continue with the pelvic floor treatment and basic physical therapy . When you add on the regular doctor's appointments, this will be a five to six hour day, from Monday thru Friday. He will also have to take additional pain medication and other medicines to supplement his body during this treatment.
For two years now my Dad has been unable to work and he will remain totally disabled for some time to come. So your support, financial, morally, as well as spiritually, is still needed. I am asking that you check out his Web site as www.faruqfund.com and make a donation and/or leave him a message of solidarity.
The work my Dad is doing as the Counsel General of the UNIA speaks for itself, so I won't elaborate on this, other than to say that it is well known that he is prepared to give his life to see the success of this work, and it should not have to come to this, nor do we want to see this work stopped.
I want to thank everyone for the thoughts and prayer you have been sending my dad. And I know someone as strong and determined as he has been in life will be a success in this challenge he is facing."
PLEASE EMAIL nique2015@yahoo.com for more information or just visit the site at www.faruqfund.com and make YOUR donation.
Peppy Entertainment & Promotions will be supporting Brother Faruq as he goes through this challenging period in his life.

The Clairvoyant is a philosophically challenging and tragically beautiful story with many interweaving plots and subplots.
Malaika, the clairvoyant, is born with extraordinary psychic powers. With one action, she alters the course of humanity by committing an act that is simultaneously noble -- and unimaginably horrific. She is brought to trial and faces the death penalty for her actions, while being defended by a brilliant but troubled lawyer.

Stages Productions' "The Plumber," which opened in Jamaica earlier this year to rave reviews, boasts an all-star cast. Andrea Wright, better known as the comedic character Delcita, leads the cast. Hailing from Clarendon, Jamaica, Wright has been a part of Paul O. Beale's plays since 1989. Notably, Wright has starred in more than ten plays and a TV show. And much to her credit, she has co-directed two commercial plays. The actress first played her distinctly funny character, Delcita Coldwater in 1993. Theatergoers can anticipate being doubled over in laughter from Delcita's constant off-beat humor in "The Plumber." Cast member Garfield Reid is truly one of Jamaica's most visible and respected actors. Moreover, Reid thrives as a writer, director and producer, who rose to theatrical prominence in Michael Denton's hit play "Hearsay." Since then, he has starred in several productions. Reid gained popularity as the idyllic character "Bad Boy Trevor." But one of his most laudable works to date is writing "Bashment Granny," one of the most popular stage plays in Jamaica's theater history. "Bashment Granny" will make it's film debut in December 2010. In "The Plumber," Reid plays John Jones, a detective who is worn down from more than 20 years of crime fighting on the police force. Stede Flash also shines as a co-star of "The Plumber" and impressively co-writer of "The Plumber." With over two decades of acting in commercial theater, Flash's most memorable character to date is "Jooky Jam" from the series "Maama Man." Introduced to acting by his high school drama tutor, Flash's first break came in 1985 when he starred in Hyacinth Brown's "Boopsie." In "The Plumber," Flash portrays Stamma. Actor Michael Nicholson rounds off "The Plumber's" cast as suave ladies man, Andre Pumpit. Although Nicholson is one of the most sought after directors in Jamaica today, he is an accomplished actor having starred in numerous pantomimes and copping the Actor Boy Award in 2000 for his supporting work in "Oliver's Posse." The play also features seasoned cast members Belinda Reid (Janet Jones), Trudy Bell (Cindy Pumpit) and Actor Everaldo Creary (Stamma).

After three weeks of performances in the UK, OLIVER SAMUELS' latest play, "PUPPY LOVE," with co-stars Dahlia Harris, Natalee Cole and Earl Brown, is coming to the University of the District of Columbia on Sunday, October 24 at 6pm.
Tickets are in popular Caribbean outlets in Maryland, DC and Virginia. For more information fans can contact (240) 462-5843, editor@everybodysmag.com or visit www.everybodysmag.com. "Puppy Love" is fun ... tantalizing, intriguing and hilarious ... Oliver is at his best and so is Dahlia Harris, one of the best actresses on the Jamaican stage. Magnificent directing and set design by Trevor Nairne; brilliant writing by playwright Patrick Brown. Although it is a comedy, there are elements of seriousness which explore friendships, love and family relationships. A 20 year old girl Karen Cross (Natelee Cole) under peer pressure falls for her protective father's Harry Cross (Earle Brown) best friend and middle age business partner Dick (Oliver Samuels). Dick tries desperately to repel Karen's predatory advances, but weakens and gets sucked in by her alluring and disarming charm and stunningly beautiful nubile body. The situation drives a wedge between the two men and plunges Dick's 30 year marriage to Denise (Dahlia Harris) into crisis ... Astute writing from Patrick Brown keeps the audience one step ahead of the characters.
To celebrate Oliver Samuels and EVERYBODY'S Magazine's 20 years of working together, a lucky fan will get $400 from Oliver Samuels on the night of the play.
