Caribbean islands celebrate Emancipation Day on August 1!

Guyana Takes the Crown as Miss Caribbean Metro 2010!

toniburnettFirst there were 12, then 5, then 2, and finally, there was 1 - Miss Toni Burnett of Guyana!  From the moment I saw her hit the stage, I told my friends "SHE is going to win."  In my eyes, there was something very special and unique about this 21 year old, dark chocolate-skinned young lady with the quiet confidence and naturally beautiful face.  She did not prove me wrong and looked nice and tight in her swimsuit; was awesome with her talent piece of a belly dance; she walked gracefully and kept her head held high in her evening gown; and when she was interviewed, she did an amazing job!  I will have an official review later, but I just wanted to stick my head in to wish TONI BURNETT all the best in her new role as Miss Caribbean Metro 2010; congratulate Abby Charles on her 2nd place win and for copping the much deserved prize of Miss Congeniality; salute all the ladies who entered and applaud their beauty, grace, talents, and energy; and give kudos to Future Stars Production and the 2010 Miss Caribbean Metro Committee for an awesome event this past Saturday.  The event is getting better and better.  Despite the one hour late start (Caribbean people time), the program was very nice; MCs Michael Campbell and Angie Ange kept the audience attentive; and everyone who attended was in high spirits and thoroughly enjoyed the event.  BTW - another Guyanese, Sharmain Greaves totally blew us away with Beyonce's "Listen."

This weekend, the Caribbean Professional Network has their Social on Friday at Zanzibar and Beres Hammond alongside Kenyatta Hill are in town at Wolf Trap on Sunday.  Cookouts, parties, dances, and the ever-popular CARIBANA in Toronto, Canada are also happening this weekend.

Safe travels and have a fun and safe week and upcoming week.  Happy birthday to all celebrating including Ayieta Crawford and Fiona Wright of Caribbean Vibes Radio.

"Taste JAMAICA" as Part of Jamaica's 48th Independence

Washington, DC (July 19, 2010) - On Sunday, August 15, JNA, ILR and JAM will bring a free public event to the area in celebration of Jamaica's 48th Independence. The event is labeled Taste JAMAICA and will have a star-studded cast of international reggae performers with Ky-mani Marley, son of the iconic and legendary Bob Marley headlining. Ky-Mani will also host a book signing session of his current publication "Dear Dad." Other performers include Benjy Myaz, Spiritual, Image Band, the Image Band, Enside Out, Lenny Kurlou, DJ Fabulous and other entertainers. The first of its kind - the festival will also be a day highlighting Jamaica's rich culture and heritage and will have vendors, food, crafts, and all things Jamaican.

JNA, a 40 year old non-profit organization, is committed to unify, foster and promote the welfare of all Jamaicans and persons of Jamaican heritage in the Washington Metropolitan Area. ILR Music Foundation, a non-profit organization, is a Maryland based non-profit organization, with a mission to enrich lives through music education and music entertainment. JAM is a cornerstone non-profit organization serving and supporting the Jamaican culture, people and business in the Baltimore, Maryland area. All three organizations and many individuals, who are working tirelessly to bring the festival alive, have been instrumental in keeping the Jamaican culture alive in the Washington DC Metropolitan area.

According to Moreen Wallace, former president of JNA and founder of ILR "On hearing that the popular 'Sunday Market' will not be held this year, a group of us decided to be proactive and stage Taste JAMAICA in celebration of our 48th independence." The collaborative efforts of the three organizations have been cemented by US based Reggae Operation WW, a music based organization with a focus to promote and support of the Jamaican culture. Other sponsors of the event include Peppy Entertainment & Promotions and the Monarchymm Group.

Taste JAMAICA will take place on Sunday, August 15 from noon until 8pm and will be held at Zanzibar on the Waterfront, located at 700 Water Street, in SW, DC. For more information, please contact Rosie "Peppy" Parke, Public Relations Officer for Taste JAMAICA or visit www.ilovereggaedc.com.

CELEBRATE
EMANCIPATION DAY
On August 1, Emancipation Day is celebrated in many islands that are former British colonies.  Jamaica, T& T, St. Lucia, and Anguilla,  are a few of the islands that celebrate Emancipation Day on August 1.  Other islands such as Bermuda, Bahamas and Guyana celebrate the holiday on the first Monday in August (August 2 this year).

As we celebrate yet another year of the emancipation of slaves of AFRICAN origin, just remember that it does not matter where YOU come from...as long as you are a black man, or woman, or child, YOU are an African!  With that being said, Happy Emancipation Day to all when it comes.
