June 10, 2010
Family,
Peppy and Finiana celebrating Haiti at CPN event
rosiefi

This month, there is so much going on and we have "so much things to say."  Yes, we are celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month (CAHM) all of June, and those of us who have the Caribbean blood in our veins are naturally elated!  Can you imagine getting an entire month to show our true colors?!!  Yeah man, we a happen!

caribamermonthlogo

The Washington DC area -- an area known for its diversity and active entertainment scene is buzzing now more than ever with various types of "bashment," as Caribbeans are crawling out from EVERYWEH to enjoy the weather and summer festivities.  Last weekend, CAHM was kicked off with the DC Film Festival and for me, it was just really cool to see so many I had not seen since "Wappy kill Fillup."   I kid you not, I actually saw many folks who I had not seen since last year when were celebrating this very month, and you know that I tend to be in many places all year long!  Why some Caribbean people move to places which have four seasons and party ONLY in summertime is beyond me, but I will leave that up to others to ponder on...smiling soooo hard as I write this, LOL.

At this time, I would like to stick a pin and big up Dr. Claire Nelson of the Institute of Caribbean Studies, Mwiza Munthali of Trans Africa Forum, Finiana Joseph of the Caribbean Professional Network, and Thomas Fontaine of the Caribbean World Bank and IMF staff (CAWI) for all the hard work they put into making the DC Film Festival informative, fun, and necessary.  I checked out 2.5 films, and it was just great to be in the AFI Theatre and watching films that are not typically shown at the major movie houses.  The fact that I was sharing the space with Caribbean folks and lovers of the Caribbean heritage made it even more special.

This weekend and coming week will also be filled with various activities celebrating CAHM, so if you are Caribbean, know someone who is Caribbean, or just have a love for the Caribbean, check out one, two, or few of MY picks in the events section below.

Image Band among performers at "Reggae Jazz and Word Riddims" on June 18 at Zanzibar
imageband
T
he Image Band has harmonious rhythms and dynamic vocals.  This electrifying group of musicians has shattered all traditional notions of success in the Caribbean entertainment industry. Their popularity is noted by the busy schedule they maintain yearly. The band fulfills regular engagements in numerous U.S. cities on the East Coast, Canada and the Caribbean. In St. Croix, Virgin Islands, the group is host to the largest New Year's Eve events held annually. Their live act is so mesmerizing; it has been repeated consecutively and grows larger each year. In the Washington, DC Carnival arena -- the group's home base, the Image Band has competed in several contests and against some of the Caribbean's most revered bands. The Image Band was the first group to win the Best Musical Band Award presented by the D.C. Carnival Committee. They were also crowned as Brass-O-Rama champions by the TNT Day in the Park Association of Baltimore. The Washington Post has featured Image Band several times in their "Caribbean Fest Live at the Carter Baron Amphitheater".

These accomplishments reflect the group's pursuit of musical excellence and encourage them to continue striving for more. This was more evident when the band was asked to perform for the Presidential Inaugural Ball of President Bill Clinton and again for President Barack Obama. "Yo ready? Le meh see yo!" -- those are the words pumping through the sound system as the lights come up and Soca/Dancehall Powerhouse Image Band hits the stage again for another foot-stomping show. Every journey to the stage is an opportunity to make a musical statement. Pulsating percussive rhythms; throbbing guitar and bass riffs; steady keyboard patterns; and the oily-smooth precision execution of live horns complement the group's presentations. Their versatility, however, enables them to play various musical genres, including R&B, Hip Hop, Reggae and Dancehall, but Soca is the heartbeat of this band. Image Band will be among the performs at the I LOVE REGGAE/PEPPY ENTERTAINMENT & PROMOTIONS sponsored "Reggae Jazz and Word Riddims" event on Friday, June 18 from 6pm to midnight at Zanzibar on the Waterfront.  See flier below in events section.

"SERIOUS BUSINESS" WILL BE SERIOUSLY FUNNY!
seriousbusiness

Serious Business is a Jamaican comedy which takes an extremely hilarious yet realistic look at how religion can be wielded for selfish and sometimes deadly means. Church leader 'Shepherd' (Maxwell Grant) manipulates and extorts the entire community to gain his riches here on earth, using his coloured past to guide his illegal activities in the present. He however has a major problem. He is rapidly losing his flock and with them the church which he needs to front his activities. The church's co-founder Elder (Volier Johnson), as part of the solution, brings in Brother Shebbie (Keith 'Shebada' Ramsay) a loud-mouthed, feisty, imposter, whose presence threatens to dethrone Shepherd as leader of the church. Can they work together to ensure a larger piece of the pie or will greed be their undoing? The battle never stops as they trade not just words n an effort to win over the congregation's hearts as well as their purse strings!

"SERIOUS BUSINESS" will be held at Cramton Auditorium this Sunday, June 13.  Tickets range between $40 and $50 can be purchased HERE or at Ticketmaster.

"DEAR DAD" BY KY-MANI MARLEY

"Where's the family in our family, today?"

On May 29, I went to Herndon, VA to check out "Roots, Reality and Culture" which was held at the Jamaica Jamaica restaurant.

I went for the program which promised doses of roots, reality and culture, and of course the opportunity to see Ky-Mani Marley perform was another reason to attend the event.  I knew that Ky-Mani was also going to be promoting his book "Dead Dad" but that was not the reason I went.  I had heard passing remarks about the book -- many folks had much to say about Ky-Mani's motivation for writing the book, the state of his finances, etc. etc. but I did not care about all of that, as the Marleys business is none of MY business -- unless of course, it is about the great music the family tends to put out.

Anyway, while at the event, I decided to big up Ky-Mani and purchase his book. Do you know how it is when you kind of expect to be reading about one thing, but then you start reading about something entirely different?  Yeah man, that is what happened to me...I started reading the excerpts from the book and was wide-eyed at some of the "secrets" that were being revealed...I am still reading the book.

If you want to read Ky-Mani Marley's story, google "DEAR DAD" and buy the book.
Whatever (new) opinion you form of Ky-Mani after reading his book, understand that he is one cool brother and he has a right to tell HIS story!

If you would like to check out Ky-Mani's performances at the "Roots, Reality and Culture" event, and see my recorded performances from Kehv, Saddi Khali, Simone Hendricks, and Angel Wambui, check out my Youtube channel below.
