Peppy Entertainment & Promotions Weekly E-Newsletter... April 22, 2010
Family,

If there ever was a time to pay closer attention to our environment, it is TODAY. I think the general consensus is that something awful is happening to the Earth and if the powers that be do not act fast, "the world may very well come to an end in 2012."

earthdayEarth Day has been observed since 1970 but in recent years, more talks about saving the planet and concentrated efforts on "going green," hybrid cars, recycling and solar energy are commonplace. Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" took things a little closer to home when he documented the effects of global warming, etc. What is mind boggling to me is that even though it has been a full 4 decades since the first Earth Day, the planet is in a more perilous state -- even with all the technological advancements. Is it me, or do we seem to be going backwards?

This morning, I made extra efforts to do environmentally-friendly things. I turned off the lights when I was not using them, remembered to close the fridge after opening it to look for something, and I even considered running to the lake instead of driving. I even took the time to literally stop and smell the roses...just beautiful. As I was inhaling the beautiful fragrance of the roses, my mind literally jumped to what the world could possibly look like in 10 years and I got petrified! In my mind's eye, I am actually seeing surrogates, only genetically modified foods, a drastic increase in plastic surgery to "cure" weight and aging issues, and the need to walk around all day and night in sunglasses. Maybe I have watched one too many movies, but if you think that having a simpler life back in the day and using oil lamps, candles, etc. was bad, just wait and see what will happen if we continue to neglect the earth.

Anyway, I am still remembering the children all of this month, so while Earth Day is being celebrated, let us continue to treat our children better. They are the ones who will inherit the earth long after we are gone. I was just reading this morning that childhood obesity is at an all time high and in some places, obesity in general is being declared a national security threat. Not taking the time to cook healthy meals and instead feeding your child(ren) fast and bad foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner is actually child abuse. How about THAT for food for thought?

If you have not done anything environmentally-friendly today, try doing simple things to help yourself and the earth:
  • use cloth napkins instead of paper ones
  • take your own grocery bags to the store
  • recycle
  • turn off lights and appliances when not in use
  • take shorter showers
  • walk or bike when possible
  • start making your own healthy meals for yourself and your child(ren)
  • make a commitment to a "green" lifestyle
  • pray for the earth
Prayers go out to Faruq Muhammad. Big ups to everyone who crossed my path this past week.

Happy Earth Day,

CONNIE CAMPBELL FUNDRAISER REVIEW

tarrusatcrossroadsOn Sunday, April 18, Crossroads was buzzing with a host of mixed emotions.  The occasion was a fundraiser for Connie Campbell, a Jamaican backup singer who had a stroke backstage approximately 8 months ago at the same venue.  Many people came out because they wanted to support Connie.  Others came out because they were fans of Shaggy, Cocoa Tea, and/or Tarrus Riley.  I went out because the lineup was stellar and more importantly, it was for a great cause.

The show was tight and on time.  The artists were on time and on point!  The crowd was well behaved and captive.  In other words, the vibes was NICE!

All the performances were heartfelt, with the artists not being afraid to show their raw emotions for the plight of one of their own.  Oasis Band opened the show and did a great job.  Sherita Lewis was on next and she held her own and gave a decent performance.  Dean Fraser was wonderful as usual and it was apparent that he was also acting as the "father" of the team.  The pride and joy he showed to see his "children" performing was obvious, so it was hard for the smile to be wiped off his face even at one point when his mic was not working properly.  I felt a very special connection when Duane Stephenson performed "Dreamweaver" for Connie.  It was so incredible, I felt hot and cold flashes running all through my body at the same time.  I am not afraid to say I found myself crying because it was sang so beautifully and it was such a genuine sentiment that came straight from the heart of Duane and Black Soil Band..."Dreamweaver, send her back to me.  Dreamweaver, set me free."

COPEPCocoa Tea hit the stage and the energy in the room went up to a higher level.  He was sooooo good, it was surreal.  He had the crowd eating out of his hands, and could have stayed on stage and not say a thing because folks were singing like they were at a choir rehearsal.  Cocoa Tea was not allowed to leave when he wanted to and had to come back to give us more!  In my opinion, he won performer of the night!   Tarrus Riley is consistently an excellent performer.  He was fun backstage and he was awesome on stage.  What else is there to say except that I love me some Tarrus "Singy-Singy" Riley?   After seeing Shaggy's performance, I am inclined to take away Elephant Man's title of "energy god" and bestow it upon Shaggy!  Well, Shaggy was not exacly running around and jumping from very high places, but the energy in his waistline was just ridiculous!  He performance was fun and engaging and the women could not get enough. I left very soon after all the performers came back onstage for one last hurrah, but I am told that the ending of the show was amazing!

Kudos to Crossroads and all the artists who came togethet to make this event truly beautiful.  Maximum respect to everyone who attended the event or made donations to the Connie Campbell Foundation.

TENTS FOR HAITI TRIP REPORT

tentsOn April 12, exactly three months after the devastating 7.0 earthquake flattened Haiti's capital and left a quarter of a million homeless, ten Haitian professionals traveled to Haiti to deliver tents to provide temporary shelter.  Since the need for temporary shelter is great, the group focused their attention to Fondwa which is located North of Port Au Prince and home to 7,000 Haitians.

The group had been planning the trip for months, and with the help of many others, they were able to reach out to various individuals and networks to raise more than $15,000. The funds were used to purchase the 300 tents which were distributed in Haiti. During the trip, the group visited with university students, businessmen, and families who were in need of comprehensive mental and financial assistance.

Some members of the group decided to adopt the city of Fondwa and develop it as a model that others can use to help Haiti. Naturally, they will return to Haiti soon to continue the work.

The outpouring of well wishes for the legacy she left does the heart proud. I am sorry I did not meet her while she was among us, but many people I know had the pleasure of meeting her, and everyone has only great things to say.

Condolences to her family and loved ones. To read the Associate Press' update on the life and legacy of Dr. Height, sign a guest book and get additional information, click on her photo or HERE.
