CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
It has been one week since I wrote about how short Black History month is already.  Since then, those of us who live in the greater Washington DC area have lost days of being out and about due to the snow storms we experienced.  We can still make up for lost time!

snowoutsideIn case you did not get the memo, this area got two back-to-back snow storms and life was "confined" for about a week. I love the snow, but when I look outside my window and cannot even SEE my car, my "WOW" is no longer one of excitement - it is more to the tune of "WTF/H?!!!!".  It was hard not to get cabin fever and since I am extremely hyperactive, I got it bad.  I had spent about an hour in the supermarket in preparation for the snow storm so food was not scare in my house and I ate and ate and ate.  If you see me and I look a little "buffer" than usual, blame it on snowmageddon!

On the upside, it was good to get some down time, but as much as I love watching movies, I found myself getting really bored and antsy.  I just wanted to be outside! Since last Thursday, the first time I moved my car was on Tuesday of this week after it took us two days to get it road worthy.  It took me almost three hours to go around my neighborhood for essentials (a trip that typically takes 45 minutes).  There were no long lines in the post office or supermarkets since most people were inside, but the roads were HORRID, and I kept remembering the saying "be careful what you wish for."

Anyway, while I was driving on Tuesday and praying under my breath for guidance and protection, it dawned on me how fortunate and blessed we are.  For the most part, we were all pretty safe during the storm - maybe power outages, a collapsed roof here and there, limited food in the house,  a few cars damaged because folks would not sit their asses at home...but we have not experienced a real disaster so we have to knock on wood for that.  The one thing I can say that the cabin fever did for me is that it got me to think harder about the fate of the people in Haiti.  It was hard for me to not think about how many and how much they have lost to the earthquake, especially when they are living outside and we still have homes and the very basic human needs...please keep praying for them.  Can you imagine what they would do to trade places with folks like me to have at least ONE DAY of cabin fever?

MEET SOME OF THE ARTISTS FOR "HOPE FOR HAITI"

jayarrJayArr is a reggae singer/songwriter born in Sierra Leone and has been residing in the US since 1989. While attending high school, he joined a reggae band where he honed his skills. During a vacation to Sierra Leone in 2004, JayArr recorded two songs "Rise Up Salone" and "Gonna Miss You" featuring the Jungle Leaders, a talented group of guys with conscious reggae vibes. These two songs were featured on Jungle Leader's "Same Soup" Album released in 2005. JayArr then went on to record "Back Stabber" featuring Jungle Leaders' own Funky Freddy - a song inspired by his struggle with dealing with disappointments from his trusted and close friends. JayArr has performed at sold out venues in Sierra Leone, the UK and in the USA. He released his new album "Here 2 Stay" to a sold out audience in one of Washington DC's premiere night clubs Zanzibar on The WaterFront on 28 March 2009. GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER - INVENTOR AND ICON
GWCFRONTGeorge Washington Carver was born in January 1864.  He was a slave student, researcher, scholar, teacher, investor and icon.  After receiving his education at Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University), Dr. Carver gained an international reputation during his career at Tuskegee University.  His research resulted in the creation of 325 products from peanuts, more than 100 products from sweet potatoes, and hundreds more from a dozen other plants native to the South. These products contributed to rural economic improvement by offering alternative crops to cotton that were beneficial for the farmers and for the land.  This digital collection contains images of Dr. Carver as well as letters and correspondence between Dr. Carver and Iowa State colleagues.  The majority of correspondence is to Dr. Carver's mentor, Dr. Louis Pammel, on a variety of scientific topics.  Mr. Carver died in January 1943. The George Washington Carver collection is housed in the Special Collections Department, Iowa State University Library.
