CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History month - the shortest month of the year shares space with so many other "celebrations" this month.  To make things worse, we are losing days to the terrible weather here in the greater Washington DC area and dealing with the Haiti situation.  Despite all that, we are wearing our BLACKness and will celebrate each day in February with pride.

profrexPopular Jamaican black musician and legend - the late Bob Marley will be celebrated in February so be sure to get your fill of reggae this month.  Speaking of Jamaica - we just lost one of Jamaica's cultural icon, educator, and renaissance man.  Professor Rex Nettleford died on February 2 just hours before celebrating his 77th birthday.  His life has already shaped history and Jamaica has truly lost one of the very special ones.

Ensure that you do the necessary HIV/AIDS checks and get educated as we celebrate Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on February 7.  American Healthy Heart Month is this month also, so ensure that you wear red tomorrow, February 5 to show your support.  For the lovers, Valentine's Day is next weekend so have fun with that, and gentlemen DO NOT FORGET THE GIFTS for the special ladies in your lives.  Independence Days of Grenada and St. Lucia, and the celebration of Republic Day in Guyana are also being celebrated in February.  For the carnival lovers, Trinidad and Tobago will be hot, hot, hot this year with the costumes, revelry, and mass.  For us over here at Peppy Entertainment & Promotions, February is indeed a wonderful month to celebrate the joys of being black - despite having a mere 28 days, very cold days and the Haiti earthquake aftermath to occupy our thoughts!

JEAN JACQUES DESSALINES - THE LEADER OF THE HAITIAN REVOLUTION
jeanjacquesBorn on September 20, 1758, Jean Jacques Dessalines was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1801 constitution.  He is remembered as one of the founding fathers of Haiti.

He was autocratic in his rule and crowned himself Emperor of Haiti in 1805.  He also was a grandfather of Cincinnatus Leconte, who served as President of Haiti from 1911 to 1912.

Dessalines served as an officer in the French army when the colony was trying to withstand Spanish and British incursions. Later he rose to become a commander in the revolt against France. As Toussaint L'Ouverture's principal lieutenant, he led many successful engagements and battles.

After the betrayal and capture of Toussaint L'Ouverture in 1802, Dessalines became the leader of the revolution. He defeated French troops sent by Napoleon in 1803. Declaring Haiti an independent nation in 1804, Dessalines was chosen by a council of generals (blacks and mullatos) to assume the office of Governor-General. In September 1804, he proclaimed himself Emperor and ruled in that capacity until being assassinated in 1806.

As we celebrate Black History month and bring awareness to Haiti's history and present day situation, I invite you to click on the image above or GOOGLE Jean Jacques Dessalines to learn more about this great historical figure.
