Greetings,
Today is October 1 and we have a full three months before all hell breaks loose when 2010 hits us smack in the face! It seems like every couple months when I write my editorial, I speak about how much time is flying...oh well - time IS flying!
For many organizations, October 1 is the beginning of a new year - fiscal that is - and so changes galore are taking place even before January 1, 2010. At my day job, for example, we are very blessed to be getting more contracts and more staff, while other nonprofits and businesses in general are cutting back on human and other resources. Naturally, I remain thankful to be gainfully employed so I can do my part in serving DC residents AND fund my passion work. Whatever you are going through during this "depression/recession," keep your heads up and stay positive! I wish I had the power to make things right so that the typical family can thrive instead of live in constant fear.
On a high note, I am excited that October is celebrated as Black History Month and Afrikan History Month in Britain. You may as well call me Ms. British because I am celebrating Black History this month as well...you can't tell me nothing! Be on the lookout for poetry and other black history tidbits each week!
October is also Family Health Month, Child Health Month and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a great month to get those necessary check ups so you can spot health problems early. Monitor your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar and do not forget the important role that exercise plays in maintaining good health.
By the way, today is the day that Maryland's "texting while driving law" goes into effect. I could give you some tips on how to avoid getting a fine which could go up to $500, but I prefer to say DO NOT TEXT WHILE DRIVING - IT IS DANGEROUS! I text while driving all the time, and sometimes when I look up from the keypad and find my car swerving to the left or right, I have to mutter "Thank You, Jesus!" The remedy for this new found "addiction" is to keep the keypad locked and know that if the matter is urgent, folks will CALL! BTW - emailing while driving is the same as texting while driving so they may as well have a law that says NO TYPING ON THE CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING!
Happy birthday to those who are celebrating this week and early next week including Abena Disroe, Garth Ferguson, Tiffany Rush, Lalordi Muhammad, Nadesia Henry and Racquel Smith.
Welcome to October,
Rosie "Peppy' Parke Creative Director/CEO Peppy Entertainment & Promotions, LLC.

"BLACK HISTORY" by Sharna Tiana Tagon x

It's about that time of year again
When Black people get their praise
All the women, girls, boys and men
Have all been through that stage
Of feeling really awkward
And feel we don't fit in
But now we're moving forward
Not cos' the color of are skin
Give thanks to those who changed
A lot back in the past
Garret A. Morgan arranged
Traffic lights, which is a blast!
Rosa Parks we mustn't forget
The history of the bus
Because of her they let
Us sit without a fuss.
George T. invented the dryer
That used heat from a stove
Granville Wood with tools and pliers
Created all the railroads
John Love invented the sharpener
In 1897
C B. Brooks with the street sweeper
And that I thinks a legend
There are facts we might not know
But are out there and is true
Like Africa discovered banjo's
Played by them till 1802
Nancy green, a former slave
Was the face of Aunt Jemima
But they wanted to see her cave
So was hit by a car behind her.
We all have a dream today
Martin Luther's still lives on
And I just don't know what to say
Because of him we are so strong.
We should unite and express all
Cos' the inner history lies
And one day we'll be successful
Cos' BLACK HISTORY'S in our eyes.

PROTECTING YOURSELF AGAINST PREDATORY ATTORNEYS By Loide Jorge, Esq.
If you find that your immigration attorney
is acting unethically, for example by,
- Refusing to give you a copy
of your file
- Not keeping you routinely
updated and informed with the details of your case
- Missing immigration deadlines
- Demanding more money for
work already done, or work not agreed upon, etc.
Your first route of action should always be
to attempt to directly resolve the matter with the attorney.
Respectfully
put your complaint/issue in writing (an email or letter), then follow
it up with a phone call. You should always give the attorney a
chance to resolve the matter. Perhaps there is an issue you, as the
client, misunderstood, or perhaps your expectations and demands are
unrealistic. Should this be the case, a thorough response by your attorney
will more oft than not clarify and/or resolve your issue. The savvy
client who insists on being informed is usually the most satisfied client.
However, if your attorney's actions
are outright egregious and you have exhausted all diplomatic
avenues to resolving the matter, you can report your attorney to a designated
grievance committee of their state bar, who will in turn commence investigative
proceedings into your complaint. Rest assured that by doing so, you are
not in danger of 'outing' yourself to immigration authorities.
Please refer to the following links
for steps on what to do:
It is important to note that filing
a complaint is a serious matter and can potentially disrupt the attorney's
career; this should only be used as a last resort if your earnest
attempts at resolution have been ignored. Sometimes, the threat of reporting
alone can get your attorney to "act right." However, avoid
reporting the attorney as a manipulative tool. Grievance committees
do not take it lightly when frivolous complaints are filed.

TONY COBB: Musical Ambassador and much more!

He is regarded as one of New York's hottest late night
radio talk show hosts,
and is known to his US fans as the suave one at 93.5 FM, "The Tony Cobb
Show." He is also known as "The cat behind the glasses."
Tony Cobb is at the top of his game-show biz. A legend in
his own right, he is impressionable, seriously funny and easy to like.
In addition to that, he is as smooth as silk, and one has to pay
attention when he talks because you're likely to miss something
important. The "Cat" was one of a handful of personalities in Jamaica,
during the late sixties and seventies, who was responsible for putting
Jamaica on an international stage as far as music is concerned.
Born in
Allman Town, Kingston, Jamaica, Cobb attended Kingston Senior and
Calabar High School. At 17 years old, he went into show business and was
soon taken on by Steven Hill, impresario, who saw his potential, and
from there, the Cat had the opportunity to spread his wings; before long
he was promoting shows and traveling around Jamaica and the US.
As a musical ambassador, he helped to introduce Pop and
R&B music to Jamaica. He did so by bringing various foreign artistes to
Jamaica, not merely to perform, but also to boost Jamaica's economy and
its music industry. Today, he is still the most sought after promoter
who books foreign artistes.
Cobb's first and most noted achievement brought the
Jackson Five to Jamaica. "This was a first class production. The
Jacksons loved Jamaica and I was honored," said Cobb. After this
venture, Cobb was slated for Beverly's Records, located at North and
Church streets in Kingston, where he worked with many artists, including
Jamaica's favorite son and reggae icon Bob Marley. Cobb recalls an
incident in May Pen, Clarendon, when Marley was slated to perform:
Marley ran off the stage at the sight of the large crowd, and it was
Cobb who brought him back to perform to an enthusiastic crowd. A story
in the evening tabloid newspaper the next day recalled the incident of
how "The Cat" saved the show... Tony Cobb is one of the sponsors of the Miss Tropical Paradise Beauty Pageant event and someone you NEED to know (especially if you are in the business of promotions).
