NEED HELP?
Do you KNOW your child needs help that he or she ISN'T GETTING? Do you want something new for your child's IEP, but don't know quite what?
If you are like me, you may know your child's program isn't quite what it should be, but you may be stumped as to how to make it better. I think in my case, I just have learned to accommodate my child and don't feel I have to think about it. Why is it so hard at school? How long has it been since I had a really fresh perspective on my own child, where they are, and what they need?
If these questions trouble you when you think about the next school year, it may be time to get new answers! On Monday, June 22nd,
Dr. Ruth Aspy and Dr. Barry Grossman are coming to Edmond, Oklahoma and you don't want to miss it!
Dr. Aspy and Dr.
Grossman are
nationally renowned, licensed psychologists, authors, and private providers specializing in the
assessment and interventions for persons with autism spectrum disorders. Their
book, The Ziggurat Model was awarded the Autism Society of America's National
Award for Literary Work of the Year in Education.
The Ziggurat model is a framework
for designing comprehensive interventions for persons with high functioning
autism and Asperger's Syndrome. The training will include how to identify the
associated features of autism by using assessment tools that address the
underlying characteristics of autism. The Ziggurat Model is used to design
specific interventions to improve weaknesses. Since these weaknesses are often not addressed they become barriers to independence. This training will help families, teachers, and professionals to learn how to develop positive programs
to encourage success.
Dr. Aspy and Dr. Grossman use a multimedia approach to involve the audience and engage everyone in the audience to help identify problems in children and teenagers that may not be identified. The
format for learning is fun and entertaining and very
informative. This program is the first day of Summer Advance 2009. However, the June 22nd program is applicable for ALL AGES! The cost is only $25 for the day long program and you can register online at www.regonline.com/SummerAdvance2009
A number of us saw this program in Texas at the State Autism Conference! It is a great program and can be life-changing for equipping parents and teachers to address the needs of our children!
If you are a teacher or professional, check out the rest of the week (June 23-26)! We are offing an in-depth training program to 20 teachers/professionals in our state. The total cost is $125, but scholarships are also available! The registration website provides an application that you can download and send in to the Oklahoma Autism Network.

Autism Related Legislation Update by Dee Blose, parent (in her personal capacity as an advocate)
On May 4th, Governor Brad Henry signed a bill to increase autism services, while at the same time challenging legislative leaders to approve insurance coverage.
On April 27, 2009, legislation designed to improve the provider network of autism specialists in Oklahoma left the chambers and headed for the Governor's signature.
Senate Bill 135 (orginally House Bill 2027) calls for enactment of a licensing process for national Board Certified Behavior Analysts and enhancement of existing state programs that would train doctors to diagnose and treat autism.
"Currently, children with autism in our state only have a handful of providers to turn to for their treatment," said House Speaker Pro Tem Kris Steele, R-Shawnee and author of the bill. "Our enphasis with this legislation is on increasing access to autism service providers, which will ensure much-needed services are available to these children in Oklahoma."

Spectrum Perspectives By Shawna Mums
Who left the Scissors Out?
You know how our kids tend to fixate on certain objects (toys, blankets, books, videos, foods etc...)? Well a few months ago when we were having a yard sale and while occupied, Jaymee got a hold of a pair of scissors and cut her waist length hair to her shoulders, some parts were even shorter. Needless to say I completely freaked out, went a little overboard emotionally, and finally came to my senses realizing it could have been worse. Read more...
Shawna is the parent of a child with autism, Jaymee, and psychology graduate student at Oklahoma State University. More Spectrum Perspectives can be read on our website.
