Quilters, Let's Take Omaha Too!

 Quilters Take Omaha logo
The Alliance for American Quilts (Quilt Alliance) invites you to attend an evening of sweets, quilts and sweet quilt stories at the AccuQuilt headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska on August 3, 2012!

Linda PumphreyWe're pleased and proud to honor longtime Alliance volunteer and quilt history champion Linda Pumphrey (right) as she finishes her board service. Read the full press release here.

Tickets are $30 for Alliance Members, $35 for non members. Limited seating for this event (80 seats)--please register early! Click here to reserve your tickets.

We'll start the evening with an exhibition of Linda's private quilt collection then indulge ourselves with wine, dessert and coffee and a fabulous silent auction. Quilt historian and Quilters Hall of Fame Honoree (2009) Merikay Waldvogel will begin our main program with a story about how she met Linda. Then we'll settle in to watch Linda being interviewed for Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.). Q.S.O.S. is the Alliance's grassroots oral history project that captures the stories of quiltmakers from the United States and beyond. The collection now includes more than 1,000 interviews archived in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and presented on the Alliance's website (www.QuiltAlliance.org/qsos).

Don't miss this special opportunity to join us this summer to honor Linda and come together to document, preserve and share our stories as a creative community. And if you can't make the trip to Omaha but want to honor Linda and support the Alliance, please make a donation in honor of Linda. All donors of $50 or more will have a chance to send an audio message to Linda on this special occasion. Click here to make an online donation or download a mail-in donation form.

Red Cross Quilt
On Monday I posted the beautiful quilt pictured above on the Quilt Index's Facebook page to commemorate the founding of the American National Red Cross (1881). This stunning Red Cross fundraising quilt was completed by Anna Clare Tate Stanfield of Wichita Falls, Texas in January 1917. From this Quilt Index record:
In all there are more than 500 names on this quilt, and the quilt raised over $300 for the Red Cross. The five-pointed stars are hand pieced and appliqued over the block seam junctures. Additional names were also written around the edge of each wheel. Some of these are company names, with the names of employees within the wheel.

Here's to all those who have played a role in service to their country, including the quilters.

With love and gratitude,

Amy
