Quilters, Let's Take Manhattan!

Quilters Take Manhattan logo Tickets are now on sale for the ultimate metropolitan getaway: Quilters Take Manhattan 2012! Join us again this year in the fabric and fashion heart of New York City for an exciting day of inspiration, learning, prizes, samples, auctions and (yes!) gorgeous quilts! Our biggest fundraiser of the year and includes two events--an afternoon of fun at the Fashion Institute of Technology and an After Hours cocktail party at the loft home of Victoria Findlay Wolfe.

The FIT event will feature a live Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.) oral history interview with Denyse Schmidt, iconic quiltmaker, teacher and entrepreneur. We'll also have a Q&A with Denyse, an exhibit of her quilts, and a book signing.  Mark Lipinski, the bold creative genius behind numerous print, web and TV productions will lead off the event with his talk, "Mark Lipinski Explains It All to You."

We'll also have extravagant door prizes, goody bags and a special silent auction of products donated by our generous sponsors. Be sure to Like the Alliance Facebook page where we'll post details on all of the incredible products you can win or bid on at the event. Some of our sponsors (listed below) will be giving away tickets via their FB pages, websites, blogs and newsletters--so be sure to visit them all.

Selected house-shaped quilts from the Alliance's "Home Is Where the Quilt Is" contest will also be displayed at FIT and the rest will be exhibited by at  The City Quilter.

The After Hours cocktail party will celebrate the full spectrum of quilting and quilters today. Rub elbows with our event speakers, Quilt Alliance members and sponsors while enjoying cocktails, demonstrations and music in the cozy yet sophisticated studio and home of Victoria Findlay Wolfe, co-founder of the New York City Metro Area Modern Quilt Guild, owner of Bumble Beans, Inc. and founder of the Bumble Beans Basics charity project.

Tickets for the FIT event are $45 for Alliance members and $60 for non members. A "Home Ticket" is also offered this year ($25) for those who can't make the trek to NYC. This will include first access to event footage online, a packed goody bag with samples and treats from all of our sponsors, a chance to win select door prizes and the chance to buy a signed copy of Denyse's new book and have it shipped to your home. And you'll be playing an important role in supporting the work of the Alliance.

Tickets for the After Hours cocktail party are $100 for Alliance members and $125 for non members.

Join us for a fantastic day in New York City with friends for a great cause. All proceeds go to support the Alliance's mission to document, preserve and share the history of quilts and quiltmakers.

James Foundation Grant to Grow Q.S.O.S. Project

The Robert and Ardis James Foundation has awarded a grant of $30,000 to the Alliance to help grow our oral history project, Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.).

This invaluable grant partially funds the first two years of an ambitious five-year plan to grow, diversify and sustain Q.S.O.S., the single largest grassroots oral history project about quiltmakers. Since 1999, volunteers have conducted more than 1,000 quiltmaker interviews, full transcripts of which are shared on the Alliance website and archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Catherine James Paglia, trustee of the Foundation, said, "The Robert and Ardis James Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the visibility of quilting and textile arts around the world. We are delighted to offer our support to the Alliance for American Quilts in their important effort to preserve and share the oral histories of American quilt makers with a wider audience." One of the nation's largest charitable foundations, the James Foundation provides support to many American and international organizations, particularly in the areas of quilting and textile arts, international security, and higher education.

Read the full press release here to find out more about this generous grant and our exciting plans for Q.S.O.S.
